INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am sorry for my inexperience with your forum. I pulled this up in a search and have been reading for hours. You have a wonderful forum, full of information!

Does anyone in Northern IN know where I can buy/trade quail? I breed Coturnix, and am looking to add several new bloodlines to my flock. I currently have around 40 adults, 5 1-day olds, and a few dozen in the incubator. I have Tibetans, Rosettas, Italians, and Jumbos. I am looking for either fertile eggs or young birds. I am willing to buy or trade.

I am also looking to increase my chicken flock (have around 70). Does anyone know who sells Frizzles in Indiana? I specialize in Araucana and Barred Rock, and could trade fertile eggs or pay for eggs. We are also looking to get into some meat birds this year. Does anyone know where to buy broilers inexpensively?

Thank you so much for your help!!!

I raise meat birds on pasture in the summer and have Dixie rainbows instead of Cornish Xs coming this year. I am also very interested in ring neck pheasant mutations.

The following info is for everyone ~

Do you want to be listed on the BYC Indiana Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link (Indiana BYCers . . .) located below my signature to view the list. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send me a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. bradselig actually adds the info, so you can PM him directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. if you have any questions about this thread, please PM Jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

AVATAR UPDATES
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

Been lurking this site for over a year. I started with chickens last year, raising RIRs for eggs. Now I have ISA Browns, RIRs, Buff Orpingtons, and Cornish X. Will be adding in some decoration birds for my wife with an assortment of Crescent tops and banties. Looking to add some Easter Eggers, Welsummers, and/or Marans. Will also be adding a couple turkeys come May. Overall, I'm looking at having ~100+ birds. Half will be egg layers. The other half decor and meat.

lollipop guild ~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Please see info listed above.
Mother2Hens - I'm thinking of writing Einstein's story. It just keeps getting better! I wrote in college, so it's time to break out my creativeness soon! You asked where the rooster is from - he is the next door neighbor's. They used to have several chickens but when we lost several to coons last year, I think they lost all theirs but him. I believe he is a Black Copper Marans. We've pretty much adopted him.
amwchicken ~ You should write about Einstein's intriguing story!

Wow - this thread is REALLY active! What a great online community to be a part of - I have had a great deal of fun scrolling through the posts from the last week or so, trying to catch up - just loving all of the spring-is-here-and-so-are-chicks photos being posted and getting a kick out of how many posts I've seen along the lines of, "I just dropped by [insert name of store] and got a bunch of chicks, but didn't mean to!" Been there, done that - LOL!!!

My hubby and I spent yesterday cleaning out the chicken shed, rearranging and beginning the work to do some renovations. We're expanding the chicken area this year. One of the things we're doing is converting a large display case into a double-decker brooder. I think that chicken people go to yard sales with re-purposing glasses on. :) I enjoy the photos being posted of coops and coop renovations.

We're also picking up two pygmy goats this week - they are does that are almost two years old and ready to breed, so I'll need to track down a suitable buck. I noticed several other folks in this thread who have goats. How do they get along with your chickens?

I'm trying to get in weekly photos of my Jaerhons' development. Here they are at three weeks:

I'll be breaking out my incubators in about a week. I'm looking forward to starting with a bunch of quail eggs, plus I'll probably put a few Serama eggs in there, too.

Spring is finally here, y'all! YAY!
I have a little pygmy buck, maybe 30 pounds at most! He is one of the 2 that were give ups. and I have no info on him at all.
He is surprisingly well mannered and friendly, but was really shying away the first few days.
Most bucks I have owned were pretty mean, this lil guy is just calm and laid back.
I would love to place him in a good home, but otherwise he can just live here forever.
I will not craigslist him, not taking any chance of him being used for someones table.
Phooey - I meant for this post to be a quote/reply ... is there a way to delete a post on BYC? (feeling like an idiot, here).
Oh no, don't feel that way at all. Don't think there is a way, but if anyone knows, please holler!

So i have some great news fellow Hoosier BYCers!! I have finally joined the ranks of owning an incubator!! But i also need to give a BIG THANKS to JCHNY!!! Thanks for responding to my PMs and helping me out!!

I would also like to quote Racinchickens as well, as i too "suddenly have quail!" lol but mine are eggs and they will be my first incubator project!!! Thanks JCHNY for the quail eggs!!!

Got the 'bator set up and it's going,so just gonna wait until tomorrow evening for the full 24 hrs then put them in there. I'm excited and nervous at the same time!!! wwooohoooo!!!

It was great seeing you again too, so sorry there is so much going on here.
Hoping when the weather breaks we can have a sit at the campfire and enjoy not rushing around!
Hoping camp opens the 2nd weekend as its planned to...

Then we can work on Dave together too!

My mom finally reserved some chicks for me at akers hatchery. So excited! They say they will be able to have them ready by the beginning of April. I am getting 1 barred Plymouth rock, 1 frizzle buff orpington (if it turns out as a hen I want to breed it with my friend's bantam buff orpington rooster, If it turns out as rooster I can breed it with my buff orp hen), 1 lavender orpington, 1 welsummer, and 1 blue laced red Wyandotte. I am going to borrow a spare dog crate from my grandma. How do you guys with crates hang the light?
goatluver ~ Congrats about your chicks! Since so many people are using brooders and heat lamps, I tweaked some info that I had put together and posted before on this thread.

Anyone raise button quail? Looking to get back into them.
I looked into it, they are just sooo teeny tiny! I have to stop adding until I get my builds done tho

Pasture fencing and breeding pens are high priority right now.

I don't remember who originally posted this picture but... guess what...that's right I have one! It was GIVEN to me...yay!!!!

The rich peeps who purchased it from our local feed stores catalog (sight unseen) were dissatisfied with it after it arrived. I happened t b there when they went in to pick it up on Saturday. The feed store employees had assembled it for them and I was saying how it would b nice for a grow out pen for my chicks.
When I was told it was sold, I told them it didn't matter because I wouldn't b able to afford something like that anyway. The owners decided to go back t the catalogs, found a much larger one t purchase and told the stores owner to give it to that nice lady who was admiring it...lol that would be ME! Yippee!!! Yappee!!! Yahooo ooo eee! THANK YOU RICH PEOPLE (who have enough money to share with others!!!) my bitties will b enjoying it as soon as I can find a pickup truck to get it home.

I agree, sometimes things happen. We just got to learn and move forward.
Can't wait for the weather tomorrow, massive yard work planned!

Have a couple pics to post from the nice weather last week. First the silkies (from Brad) they're about 7 weeks old.
Blues:

Partridge:

These pics were last week, their heads puffs are bigger already than this.
This one is a mix from my layer flock, BO rooster with BA hen. I think the coloring is kind of cool but unfortunately he's looking like a boy. I don't have room for another rooster.

And last, a couple from my first CCL hatch (thanks Racinchickins) Out of ten eggs I had seven hatch. 5 boys and 2 girls.

Pretty easy to tell the boys from girls after they dry off.
Lovely babies!

Quote: Awesome on the egg! Sounds like you have a very good plan dealing with Mareks.
thanks for your kind words too!

Well, I have already confessed to being a spreadsheet junkie. I've just made an EggSpreadsheet 1.0. It has a list of each of my chickens, the dates, the daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly totals as well as notes on each of them. It can easily be updated for anyone's chickens if you want a copy. I'm sure eventually I will make it prettier too.
Hehehe, I have one too, I just track eggs laid by species, and total by month.
Then I have tabs to track hatches by species. all I am waiting for laying is scovies and guinea.
Won;t be long now!!!!

No sleep for me tonight. I just went to look at the ducklings and chicks and Skittles, smaller duckling, was laid out in the food dish. I picked her up and she didn't put up a fight at all. She is very weak. I can feel her ribs and spine. She lays around a lot anyway, but tonight was different. I laid her on a cushion and got her some food and water to see if I could get her to eat. She stayed perfectly still the whole time. She wants to close her eyes. I got a little poly vi sol in her, and got her to take a couple of drinks. She didn't want to eat or drink. I don't know what's wrong. I'm new to ducks. I feel so bad. I hope she pulls through. I don't want to leave scrappy alone without another duck. She seemed okay today when I took pics of them.
