INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well, I have some sad news:

Einstein, my lone EE hen, was killed today by either a stray cat or my brother's dog. She just turned a year old this week and started laying again a couple weeks ago.
After all that girl has been through...raccoons, flock illness, below freezing temps, etc. I just can't believe this.

This was her just a few days ago, when she was helping me clean my Jeep.

My DF called me as I was finishing up work and I cried all the way home.

I was going to start trying to incubate her eggs too.

Is anyone from Ellitsville/Bloomington and below (Southern Indiana) incubating at the moment? If Einstein laid an egg today before moving on to chicken heaven, it is most likely fertilized by her now lonely BCM boyfriend. I haven't tested out my incubator yet and if there's a chance to hatch, I would really love to try! I am going to be in the Bloomington area tomorrow, but I will drive anywhere within 2 hours of Dubois County. Thanks!

amwchicken ~ Oh my! I am all teary-eyed about Einstein.

I can't believe it. I am so sorry to hear that!

Kiniska lives not too far from you and she mentioned recently that she's been hatching. My English Orpington chicks are from her, and they're beautiful (her hen hatched them, though). Click on the members list link at the bottom of my signature to look at members who don't live far from you. Surely someone could help.

Well my EE that was suspected with meraks, got her lab work back, and nothing seems out of the ordinary the vet said, so we.both are not sure what's going on with her, she is submitting her case to Purdue and hoping for a reply, she is attempting to stand, but still can't yet, and from what I'm researching in my own I can't find anything similar to what she is displaying.

Urbanmom ~ Wow, the not knowing is the tough part. It's great that you're getting an opinion from Purdue. Keep us posted.

SebrightMom ~ Sounds like spring is happening at your house with all of the animal births. We're glad you're back, too!

Bad news for the Marans! I took the divider down for a couple of hours tonight so they could start integrating with the flock. It sure is hard to see babies getting picked on! It seems like those at the bottom of the pecking order are the meanest too! It wasn't horrible....no blood and I was monitoring. After about 45 minutes I let the bigs out to free range to give the babies a break and left the run door open so the 12 week olds could explore the full run a bit. I was working by the house checking on their progress and noticed that they were out wandering around free ranging in a confused way! LOL I had to put them back in after about 30 minutes and I let them go to roost in their half of the coop away from others. I will let them all out in the run together all day tomorrow and then put the babies in the coop with the bigs tomorrow. Poor things! I am looking forward to the integration being over with though.

I have a confirmed egg eater and she wasn't stealthy (tried it right in front of me yesterday) so I know which one it is. Boo Harriet (my barred rock in my avatar). I bought fake eggs at Michaels today and I was in there putting them in and she jumped up and tried eating the fake eggs as I was putting them in! Talk about no shame! I put like 4 in each nest box so I am hoping it will fool her and at least slow her down. I really don't want her teaching it to the rest and with only 5 hens right now I don't want an egg eaten a day! My luck she will be smart enough to tell the difference between the real and the fake....but, in other news it may not be a problem for long because she figured out how to get out of the free range chicken paddock (which, by the way is about 50 yards by 30 yards.....) and was wandering around by the road asking to be eaten by one of my neighbors dogs. No one except me believes in fencing or containing their dogs...so despite my best efforts it is only a matter of time.
ChickCrazed ~ I could relate to your comment about those at the bottom of the pecking order being the meanest. My EE, Roadrunner, was at the bottom of the pecking order until I integrated my Jubilee Orp and bantam Chocolate Orp into my flock of six. Roadrunner used to be meek and sweet, but when it comes to the Orps, she thinks she needs to assert herself. When I scold her, she runs off and whines pitifully. My two orps have been tight buddies until recently when I've been digging up invasive roots and they compete for worms. My Jubilee, Adeline, is already twice the size of Bonbon, but she pulls her neck up high and leans over to give Bonbon a big peck on the head. Bonbon will jump up with her talons forward to Adeline's face! My sweet Orps! When I tell them to stop and proceed to give them a lecture about the importance of sisterhood, it's Bonbon who has trouble backing off. She's a bantam ninja!

Your Harriet is hilarious! She must be obsessed if she tries to eat fake eggs. And she reminds me of my crazy Nene who also likes to wander off for an adventure.
chick rookie ~ That is a beautiful white hen. That poor rooster can't help it if he's a little cranky from being moved to a new home.

kabhyper ~ Did you hatch the Cochins or buy them? They are all sweet. Btw, I've been meaning to ask you for the Silkie info link you had posted before. I missed copying it, and I'd really like to check it out. You said it had a lot of good info about raising Silkies. Thanks!

kab~ You had mentioned that Silkies need certain vitamins and had mentioned a link-- if you don't remember, I can try to find it.
How many silkies need to be together to keep warm enough for outside temps in general year-round? (I realize that an arctic blast is too cold).

Okay here are the new LF cochins. I think 3 black and a blue.

The little one whos butt I keep cleaning. That dark spot under the vent is the scabbed navel. I hope it heals up okay.

I have a chick that is having the same butt problem. I also have to clean it several times a day. It acts like it hurts when I clean it, so I try to be really careful and as quick as possible. Besides cleaning off the poop, I am leaving its butt alone.

I just use poly vi sol with out iron, chick saver, ACV. Silkies are prone to wry neck and vitamin deficiencies. I have 17 in the coop right now. 12 grown 5 2 month olds. The more the merrier, I would wait to put your babies out for a bit, until this next cold snap anyway. Mine are piled up in the coop. It's 30 degrees out, I can see them on camera, and they seem okay. I have also been watching a little mouse, james bond his way in between them sneaking food. I don't want him in there but it is entertaining

Thanks, I seen a white EE a good while back and always thought how neat it would be to have one, now I have one and maybe 2 it looks like of my EE chicks might turn out to be white too... as far as that Rooster goes... well I may be wrong but I just wont deal with a mean boys. and if I cant catch them to clip the wings to stop this flying stuff they both will end up dead when they get into a strange dogs mouth from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And the kids next door love chickens and I can just see poor Julie's face all scratched up cause she thought she could hold him, ( if she could even catch him ) its really upsetting cause I really do think he is Pretty, and her, I wish I knew what they were have been looking through pic's online of different chickens trying to find him. I just cant see anyone using them as a breeding pair if they are just barnyard mutts???
idunno.gif

And don't get me wrong... I love hearing a rooster crow in the mornings.... but this butt head started at 4 am this morning and has not stopped yet, he crowed all day yesterday.
The new girls wont come out of the garage cause he will attack them if they do. I have just got to get rid of him.

LOL yes Harriet is hilarious and has a personality much like your crazy Nene! She almost got locked out of the coop yesterday because I did my usual visual of the free range area and then locked the run up thinking they were all inside. I happened to be outside with the dogs about 45 minutes later when I see Harriet doing the waddle of shame down the lane to the coop. I guess I should be grateful she is smart enough to get herself back inside the fence! I will be so devastated if she gets herself killed. I'm hoping once it starts greening up a bit there will be more in the chicken area to keep her interest and she won't wander.

It is SO hard to see the nice ones be mean! I always try to protect the downtrodden and now I am having to yell and chase the meek normally well behaved ones and the normal means ones are being nice! I think I am just worrying about nothing though, they really haven't been too bad with the babies. No blood and they are settling down and not even pecking at them any more. I put the babies in the coop last night with the others for the first time. I moved their baby roost in also thinking they would want to roost away from the meanies and they aren't used to tall roosts. I sat in the coop for an hour last night watching them and trying to help them get settled on their roost. I finally went inside and today when I went out to let them out I couldn't find them! They were up on the top roost with the big kids! I think they will be fine lol!

Took a few pics of some chicks. I'm really excited to see how these tolbunt/legbar chicks turn out! I'm pretty sure one us pure tolbunt but time will tell.

I'm so sorry! So sad!! I hope you find someone to incubate your egg! My dogs got one of the Welsummers a few months after I got the chickens. She flew into the dog yard :( I was sad but I wasn't super attached to them yet at that point. They were still super standoffish. NOW I would be a basketcase. I'm hoping the rest saw what happened and took mental note....but they still don't seem scared of the dogs and will get right up next to them through the fence :(
