Sweet! Thanks for posting this!! I didn't get down there Friday but will be down there most if this week so I'll have to stop by!! :)

In other news I got antsy over the weekend and decided to candle my eggs a little early and.... I didn't kill them!!! :) The temp has held steady since then too so the only thing I can think is DS went in to "check on them" and fiddled the the control.

Hi Everyone. I'm stressing out. My chicks are about 6 weeks old now (that's assuming they were 1 week old when I got them) and they're getting too big for their brooder. I have them in an old pack-n-play babies play pen. I was planning to put them in their coop/run about now but it's still getting pretty cold at night.

Do you think it's ok to go ahead and move them outside? I'm worried about doing that, but I'm also worried about keeping them crammed together in the playpen.
lajohnston ~ What did you end up doing? It seems like yours would be warm enough if they were in the box part of your Nap Town Coop with plenty of pine shavings.

I think that my 3 month old chicks stood up the entire time during their first night in the coop on Saturday night. Here's a photo of the two English Orps the next day (on the top of the chicken tractor, which is in a pen). Notice how the sleepy female is the security guard while the male gets to nap!

(Below--The night before)

As you can see by the photo of my coop below, the chicks are housed on the left side, which is blocked off by window screens. I normally would let them into their pen area in the yard, but since it's raining today, I shut the front door and let them have the whole coop. My six hens like to either hang out under the deck or in the garage during rainy weather.

Ok, so here's the intended coop. Hubby "gave" me the shed and then took it back when he realized it was hard wired with electric and I want to move it to the other side of the yard...lol. We just bought this house and he's got the garage and what was formerly a one car garage, converted to a "man cave". Anyway....this is my coop. I am getting 3 juvie silkies from bradselig and I have the 6 buff orpingtons at my FIL's, plus I see life in 2 of my silkie eggs (I thought I was down to just one). This shed is 10 by 12. It has not been converted to a real coop, just yet. I need ideas as to how to make a screen/wire door for it. The babies will be housed in it until hubby moves the shed and builds the two runs he's insisting on me having. I don't want to hole them up in a dark shed in the mean time. I thought if I could get the wire doors on it and put deep litter down, it would be ok for a little while. Sorry if I'm rambling, I'm just really excited.
dogwoodlaine ~ Wow! That looks like it will be a great coop! If your DH can build runs, he could build a door. This photo is from when my coop was just built, and I made a photo album for my profile. It shows the door that was constructed. Hardware cloth extends several inches on the top and bottom of the door (the rest of the hardware cloth on the coop extends down and is buried in the ground).

Not sure what part of the state you're in, but other resources for doors include architectural salvation businesses, habitat for humanity re-stores, craigslist, and other second-hand sellers.

Quote: Indiana has a beekeeping school too, my DH went to it and got certified over a weekend. Started seeing honeybees in the yard yesterday, first time since November! They really are pretty easy. Just feed em sugar water in spring and fall and check the hive every couple of weeks. If something goes wrong or doesn't look right there are beekeeping forums just like this one and lots of people in the state who can help. Finding the queen feels like winning the lottery sometimes. Takes a while to be able to spot her easily but once you can do it, it is really fun! Hope you start keeping bees, we need more backyard beekeepers to help save them from extinction.

Thank you. It's kind of a yellowish green...I was actually going to paint over it with white, but I'm digging the "shabby" look of it, so I think it will just stay yellowish green!
I'd leave it too! It looks perfect for chickens. I hope my coop looks that good one day! :)

I probably won't be able to do Chicken Fest this year, but I will say I've had great experiences using CafePress for tee shirts. I have an allergic child and when he was a baby there wasn't much awareness about food allergies (no warning labels at that time), so I created a few designs for him to wear. Then, other people asked me to make designs for their kids..and so on and so on until I had made over 400 designs. All my products came through CafePress and they were good quality and have a lot of styles to choose from. I recall it's a one-click thing to choose "apply to all", and then you've got white tees, pink tees, ladies vs men's styles, kid sizes, they even had a shirt for a dog. You can set the price as low to cost as you want, too.

It would be cool & I would def buy a shirt if someone set it up, even if I can't go to Chicken Fest.
leslea ~ Thanks for the tip! I love CafePress, but I didn't know they would print your own design. Since you, Leahs Mom, and I are graphic designers, we should submit some designs to jchny/Janet. She could post them without our names, and people could vote on their favorite. We'd have to decide on quantity of ink colors, which as you know, affects the pricing.

I was going to start my hive this year, but I owe too much on taxes and it will have to wait at least a few months.

I also want to do a top bar hive, and it seems you can't get a nuc for those. I may build my hive in a month or two and try to lure a swarm. Are there any good local suppliers of bees? The only thing my internet research turned up was suppliers in Michigan. I'd rather NOT drive four hours each way - one way with a swarm of bees in my car!!!

Our TSC also has bins with red pullets. The sign says they can be red sexlink (or comet, etc), new hampshire red, rhode island red -- can't remember what else was listed, but essentially anything with red in the name.

Someday?? We'd like to have a couple goats or sheep, but not ready to take on anything else new and all the stuff to learn about raising another species! Keep posting the pics, though

Good to know I must have missed the list, but then I was in a hurry to get the sick ones home and start to work on them, BTW they are doing ok all but 1 is acting like nothing was ever wrong and the one with the eye problem.. cleared right up.

Goats are allot of fun and cheaper then my horses... lol Not that I would ever get rid of my horses, if I can help it. I just posted they were for sale cause I know some people here are into goats and thought I would give them first dibs then I am putting them on HT. If I had more land, I would keep thyem they are beautiful and most have been shown and 1 even did really great with a Jr. Doe title, but ... oh well someday.

It's Done!!!!! All but outside corner trim, and inside perches and nesting boxes. Ok ok so it's not done but at least the siding is all done :)

The trim around the windows was tricky but I figured it out, and it looks great.
