INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Yats is awesome!  They opened one near work this year and I was so excited to have once closer!  They are very slow to update their website.  I know I was checking for the traders point location menu about 4 months after it opened and it still wasn't up there.

Papa Roux (10th & Post) is also a great place for Po-boys and Cajun eats. I recommend it!

I know a wonderful lady on BYC name Cheeka in upstate NY..she gets heavy snow and hard winters. I really think she is your "go to" to ask about hers. It looks nice and she has had bitter cold and a lot of snow this year, the "Dome" is still holding well!
Foot looks ok from what I see in the pics. Watched the video, She overextended, sprained or strained that leg. If you can, confine her so she can't injure it more, give her a few days to heal. She needs some movement, just no jumping etc. Dog crates are excellent hospital wards, LOL.

lilmizscareall ~ My BR Tweedy started limping several months ago, and I felt certain it was from landing wrong or stumbling, etc. because our backyard is hilly with a lot of landscaping rocks (came with the house lol), so it can be a little treacherous. Since then, her limp has been up and down -- literally and figuratively --haha. Somedays it's not bad and other days it may be a little worse. The problem is that I think it would be more stressful for her if I had her inside in a situation where she had to rest and not use her leg. Plus, I had a lavender orp pullet that actually injured her leg and couldn't use it. Keeping her in a kennel made it worse since it wasn't being used at all-- it was obviously a more severe situation, but I learned that it's better to keep the leg moving when possible. Remember though, that I'm describing my experiences with two chickens with leg issues, which may or may not relate to your chicken's condition.

I think I'm going to try keeping her in the run, along with a couple buds, for a few days. I think it'll help me keep an eye on her.

Quote: I love Yats! The chili-cheese etoufee is my favorite. (love Jockamos too!)

Quote: Thats great news! I love to hear the cheeping peeping while they are in the egg, especially the turkey poults

and the goslings too, just melts your heart.
Almost finished painting the boards for my run. I think I have two "side" ends that'll take about 5 min to do, then they can dry overnight.

Tomorrow we get to start hammering things together! *fingers crossed*

I am so grateful it is finally spring for REAL.

My publicist asked about my next release, if I wanted to do it on May 4th. I realized that if I did that, I would have 3 crazy days in a row: release day, son's birthday, then chicks coming, boom-boom-boom. We'll also have soccer practice that week, soccer game, school, you name it. I'm going to lose my mind, aren't I? I'll have to push the release to the Friday before, I guess, because there is no way I'll be able to get any work done with fluffy butts in my "office."
Sounds like an exciting time. New book and new babies!

Aww. My cute little roo started crowing this morning. I don't think it will bother the neighbors yet....but I think I we'd to get a door on their coop for the morning.

Do any of you have a local (within an hour or so of Indianapolis) source for white broiler chicks? We just received our first batch of the year from Meyer and lost 12 within the first 48 hours - 6 were DOA. Frustrating.

I have another batch on order from them, but if I could find a local source that would be better.

TSC won't have them after Easter, which is when I need to get them in order to maintain the timeline I have set up.

Thanks for any ideas.

TSC in Carmel had white cornish as of yesterday evening. Not sure if those will work! You might call them to see what they still have.

Dad & I started exploring nursing home placement for my mom this week. We're waiting to get an assessment appointment for her to get the ball rolling. We weren't aware of this before, but before anyone can be admitted to a nursing home in Indiana, Real Services has to do an assessment and there are some papers that the physician needs to fill out. We just figured we could arrangement placement ourselves, but that's not the case! Mom's condition has gone downhill the last month or so & Dad has reached his limit for providing care. She needs 24 hr supervision and it's to the point where neither Dad nor I can get much of anything else done, plus there's more aggressive/violent behavior occurring. A couple nursing homes we'd like to use aren't set up to deal with her advanced Alzheimers so we'll probably be needing to find someplace that provides specific care for dementia -- hopefully a facility that's close to us. We're hoping to get her in place somewhere as soon as possible. It'll be hard to make that move, but it will be a good thing all around.

With all that being said, I'm hoping we may be able to host a gathering up here in the northern part of the state -- maybe August or this fall or next year? Summer is pretty busy and short with all our fair activities & school starting the beginning of August. I didn't feel comfortable offering before with Mom here, but with our situation changing, it's looking like more of a possibility!

Sorry to hear about.

I understand what you and your dad are going through; My grandma had that. Its heartbreaking to watch them go downhill so quick. My grandma got so bad that she had to be watched 24/7. I couldn't take care of her anymore by myself and take care of my stuff and the mess my parents left for me to straighten out. I hope you find one that is close to you and visit her often.

Jchny2000- Stress will cause odd eggs. That last pic shows a porous egg for sure. When i start to see my eggs off and some of the other issues, I move out the extra roos from the flock. I really need to set up a bachelor coop again! Having rehomed the extra roo will sure help your hen.
I just put the 4 sexlink roos and a drake in last years grow out coop, they were terrorizing the whole flock. The roosters have no value as breeders, and are not nice birds at all. the drake is an oddball/nutcase and tries to mate chickens, won't even look at the duck hens

He would sneak into the chicken run next to the waterfowl pen, and grab a hen

Hahaha. My friend's Blue swedish drake would go after her two Silver lace wyandottes. He would not even look at the duck hens we had. We have to separate them for a year before he got the idea that the chicken hen were not for him and him alone.

I can't remember if I've ever introduced myself here, so I guess that means it's been long enough that I can get away with doing it again. ;-)

My name is Aaron, I live on the West side of Indy, just outside the loop on Rockville (that's US 36 to the rest of the state). I am brand-new to chicken ownership.

I've been planning to start a flock for about two years, since we bought our house. This place came with an old 12' x 12' garden shed in the back yard, and once I cleaned it out I realized it would make a fantastic coup. I'm almost done with the conversion, and I'm going to set up a small hoop-house style run. I wish I could just fence the yard and let the birds roam, but we have a lot of hawks and even some falcons around here. I've seen red-tails picking doves off our powerlines a lot of mornings, so it has to be full-time containment for us! I'll try to get some pics of the coup/run project up some time.

The only problem I'm having so far is finding chickens. Part of the reason for this is I'm being kind of particular - I really want Australorps. If it comes down to it, I'll get over myself and be content with RIRs or Orpingtons. The other bump in the road is that I really don't have time to raise chicks, so I'm looking to buy pullets. I don't mind if they're not laying age, but they need to be old enough that I can move them straight into the coup. I'm going to put a post in the buy/sell/trade area. So far I've had a really difficult time finding information about breeders in the area - I figure there have to be some around central Indiana, but they don't seem to be online.

I have really appreciated having this website as a resource; it's been tremendously helpful in planning and executing this project. I'm looking forward to being part of the community!
