INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Here are some new pics of our 5 week old chicks.

This Easter Egger has a more prominent comb but still seems like a girl to me.

I don't know anything about sexing Welsummers but this one has a much larger comb than the Welsummer 1 and is not as friendly.

The Black Australorp is so sweet. I am very happy we brought "her" home.

This OEGB is the cutest ever!! So sweet.

This EE has to be a roo. Even though it has a smaller comb than the other one, it tries to challenge me every time I put my hand in the crate. It's too bad if he is because I just won't have another mean roo.

This Mille Fleur is so funny and such a good flier!

this Welsummer might be the sweetest in the bunch. My fingers are crossed that she is a girl.

Aww they are all cute. That first on looks a lot like the RIR SLW mix we have!

Anyone had any communication with @minmin1258 lately? Haven't seen her post anything since March...

Your birds look amazing, looks like they had a bath before the photos! Is Margie a porcelain silkie? She is very cute!

Haha, that's funny, I've never bathed any of my chickens! I believe Margie was supposed to be a porcelain Silkie. I've compared pictures and she does look like one, but I usually just call her a Silkie because I don't have any intentions of showing or breeding her. :)

I added my educated guesses above each picture. :)

Well after some quality time with my hen Mr P has decided he likes her. I've been working with him and after release on Saturday he is not leaving and is putting himself up in our large coop with her and the chickens! So glad! He won't leave her side.
Finally got some outside pics and moon! Unfortunately it's dreary outside so no pretty sunshine but it will do for now. He's 2 and has a handful of eyes there but I took the pic from my kitchen window.

ellymayRans~ Cool! I'm glad to hear that they're a happy couple. I hope jchny's peas adapted. Not sure what sexes she ended up with, but I know she was worried about them taking off or being attacked by predators.
Good Luck! I went with the 6 foot tall chain link all the way around and on top. I secured it by hammering in fencing staples. Here is a picture of mine just after it was built. It handled snow well. My biggest issue has been that Starlings and Sparrows were seriously invading my coop all winter. I had to add a row of chicken wire and another row of bird netting since the Sparrows were even able to get through the chicken wire. In the end with my bird issues I wish I had just gone with hardware cloth. If you haven't had bird issues you might not have my same issue.

CrazedChick - Very nice set-up! And cute, lucky chicks!

Leah's Mom ~ You also have a great area for chickens! I remember when you said your husband found some international flags and put them up to scare away hawks.

Folks, I collected 27 eggs today. :th 27 eggs from 26 for sure laying hens, 5 hit-and-miss banties, and 3 retirees. I was shocked to see so many in the boxes! And there would have even been 28, but miss Frou-Frou squashed hers. But anyway, I do know for sure that Cubby laid an egg today! 9 years old and still laying! :celebrate You go, girl!

In less super news, we've got a light layer of snow on the ground. :barnie :he

1 am. Full grown Lf Wyandotte rooster crowing in my house. Spectacular. Can't wait to not sleep.

Hope he feels good enough tomorrow to not be in here . Crowing really echos when you live in a relatively small house. So glad DH sleeps like the dead, or else I would feel really bad.

Onto problem #2)

I have an injured hen. Apparently we had an attack by some such animal and I lost my last black hen (

) and I found one of my BR hens with a really bad looking rump. 'It' tore half of her vent and the area left of it and it looks like she got BBQ'ed, and her vent is leaking. It smells, reeks! She acts fine though. Except for when I tried to clean the 'poop' off her. I don't know if it'll get infected or not the corner of her vent looked bruised and aside from her runny, grainy white poop just leaking out of her I think she is fine. I hope she isn't laying eggs or that the Roo tries to mount her because I'm sure it will hurt. I was able to spray her injuries with some vetiricyn spray stuff, I think that's right. I used it before on Scarlet when she was attacked by the coon and it healed right up after a couple of applications. So I'm keeping an eye on DeeDee now and out for coyotes and coons.
FlockMaster ~ There's no doubt that your poor hen is suffering if her vent has been torn open and is leaking. Very painful. She's trying to act like she's fine, so she won't appear weak, which would lead the others to attack and possibly kill her. Her injuries may be a result from vent pecking. Please see info below.

It would be best for her to be separated and cared for until she heals.

kabhyper ~ Poor Gus! (lol) He's hurt and confused. Maybe he wants to lay in bed between you and your DH.

I know you've said that you have an air-cleaner-- is it on HIGH? I always look for fans that are loud because I like to drown out any noise. I needed to buy a new fan recently, and the package said, "New-- quiet motor!" I put that one back on the shelf.

CRSelvey ~ Your chicks are so sweet looking

-- even all those roos that Pipd sexed for you! What a nice service provided, though. I sure wish I knew what my silkies were. One of them has TONS of feathers on its feet. I don't know if that's bad or good or negligible.
