INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Page 2626 and off to bed..Please pm me if you posted something and I haven't answered yet.
Excited for our chickenfest and hope we can have another north and south also!
Welcome to any new members I may have missed, please jump in and just talk about whats on your mind.
Our only rule is follow BYC guidelines, and keep chat family clean as we have children/young adults as members also.
We are not limited to chicken talk. Share your kids graduation, new horse, vent

about laws in your city, or your neighbors dog.
Our thread is based on local neighbors helping others make it work, and find resources to raise our poultry and livestock.
And to know there is somewhere to go to ask a question, get support, and just have someone to talk to when we need ideas.

Right, exactly. I understood that you made the suggestion while we all thought he may have been intentionally selling sick animals. If I still thought that were the case, I'd definitely rat him out. But as you said, the sum of my interactions leads me to believe he's just not very good at keeping them clean. I think (but I don't know this for sure) they may have spent the majority of their time in a 6' by 6' outdoor pen on hard dirt. With four other hens and a roo. Their keel feathers have taken a beating, at any rate. I think this guy is more interested in breeding lines and caring for his "show-quality" birds than anything else.

In lighter news, everyone seems to be settling in, and there's an order emerging. It mostly involves Penelope the Mutt:

being the Queen of Everything, and everyone else staying out of her way. As I was closing up for the night, she wanted pretty much the entire six feet of roost to herself. She even started picking on the two black orps, which are each twice her size. I know size means nothing compared to attitude in the animal world.
So we named most of them last night, and keep in mind that a 6-year-old girl was involved in the decision making process.

This is Anne Boleyn

This is her cousin, Kathryn Howard. If you don't already know how funny that is, look them up. ;-)

Our mostly-white-ish EE is Elsa. I tried to veto the name, but my daughter wouldn't Let It Go. Ha ha. These are the jokes, folks.

So of course, one of the Comets is Anna. The other, who is more red and less white, is Ariel. There's a theme, you see.
As a side note, the comets are little rockets, and were terribly difficult to get a decent shot of.

That just leaves the gray-ish EE. I didn't get a good shot of it. The gender of this bird is in dispute. If we have a hen, she will be Jane Gray. If we have a roo, he will be Gandalf, and we'll be taking him back from whence he came, where hopefully they'll keep the name cause it's awesome.

That's about it!

:frow Hey guys!!! Terribly busy week, hoping to catch up a bit tonight.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
:ya chickenfest is approved :celebrate
I have the smiles and approval of my gracious campground owner, Dave.
More details coming!!!!

Can you please let me know all the details for this event!! I would like to come if I can give my work enough notice. Sounds fun. Is this a sell/barter birds or just a gathering without birds? Thanks

I'm disappointed the roo won't be named Henry :) I love the names! Isn't chicken TV great?

I went out to open things up this morning and my babies spent their first night on their roost!!! Woohoo!!! They are almost 10 weeks and had insisted on sleeping in a chick pile next to the feeder. They were using the outdoor roost and jungle gym just fine, so I know they got the concept prior to this. One more week of quarantine on my new rocks and ee's and then life will get a bit simpler for me!!!

On another note, one of my horses (old man at 25 years old) has been stressing me out for months. I have been really struggling to keep weight on him and he just hasn't had any appetite. This winter was especially difficult, he was dropping lbs like crazy. I have been really worried. I have tried a bunch of different feeds and supplements and FINALLY made some progress with a feed he jumped on yesterday! I am hoping i am turning a corner with him now that he has shown some interest in food! I wish I had to work this hard to put weight on ME! I know we only have our animals as long as we have them, but while I have him I will put everything I have into keeping his quality of life good!

@hoosiercheetah -- I LOVE the names too! Jane, Kathryn, and Anne are hilarious as with the Princesses names :) Your possible roo's name reminds me that if we could have them, my DH wanted to name him Ragnar (sp?) from the Vikings show. Another "history" related name is our Nellie. My husband called her Lady Nelson, Lord Nelson's chicken wife. I am a big fan of Napoleanic, Regency, and Georgian times which might play into the names of any future hens. I think you could reasonably add in Mary and Elizabeth in your group if needed and still be accurate

I thought about Mary, but we didn't want an Elizabeth. The sub-theme is royalty that were beheaded. I was thing of calling the gray EE Charles, if it's a roo. :-D

My old neighbor had a mule and a horse that he worked as a team. He was telling me that once he bought soybean hay and they loved it so much that they would not hardly eat regular hay when it was gone. Where to find soy bean hay is the big question.

Does anyone here use nipple waterers? Horizontal or vertical? How well do they work for you? I'm interested in installing some when I redo my coop and make new ones because they seem easier to maintain than the waterers I've got. But I was just wondering what you're guys's opinions were.
We use nippple waterers. I built a 'Water Tractor' so the girls could have water wherever they go, and inside the coop, we have a corner watering system. Both use PVC with horizontal nipples. The only picture I have right now is one from this winter, which had heat tape wrapped on the PVC, but you get the idea.

They work wonderfully. The chickens figured out how to use them within minutes. After the chickens drink, there is frequently a drop at the end of the nipple. That drip will fall onto your bedding unless you have a drip cup. For 8 hens, my indoor waterer has 5 nipples. That's 5 drips after the hens use the nipples--that dripping was not enough to cause a problem with wetness.
