INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thanks! It is a really great rescue and my parents wanted to give her every chance since she had such a horrible start to life. My parents have and will keep her sister. Here is an article about the danes and their rescue. It is so sad, I don't understand how anyone has it in them to be so cruel and do this to an animal.

http://news.mywalworthcounty.com/?p=1822

The dane that had to go back is the one that is jumping up on the mans lap in one of the pictures. She only weighed 31 lbs when she was rescued - up to her eventual weight of 110 lbs. It really was a horrific situation and we will all miss her, but the story got such news coverage they don't think they will have trouble finding her a new home. They have already said she won't be placed anywhere with other dogs or children with her recent history.
Oh my gosh, that poor dog.

Well, I'm glad she'll get a home where she'll have a better chance at behaving herself.

I used to foster dogs and I think it is a long, slow process of helping them recover.

Okay, question about my first brooder! Attention all experts!

I went by the Chicken Chick's post on brooders and made this today.

I used puppy pads, but as you can see from the "mother in law suite" photo at the end, it doesn't fit the box very well. Should I tape it down, or will it not matter? Will the chicks pull it up and get smothered under it? Sorry if that is a dumb q, I am feelin' paranoid.

Also, do I need to cut hardware cloth to go over the top to keep my dogs out? I may have guineas in here, too, and I know they fly by the end of two weeks, but I wondered if the plastic netting would be sufficient. The boxes are really high so the dogs can't really see what's in there unless they go to great lengths. I figure if they go to those lengths then hardware cloth would not stop them, either.

Trying to avoid snipping hardware cloth, but if y'all think it's necessary vs the netting, please let me know.

Thanks!!! 5 more days!
How many chicks will you have in there? If possible, I would close off the MIL Suite until they start getting crowded in the original box. When they first hatch/arrive, you want the food and water to be front and center, as well as the heat source easily available. I would be worried that a small one would get into the other section and not be able to figure out how to get back. Once they get a bit bigger and are more explorative, open up the second section to give them more room and a new playground.

Okay! I will have 6 or 8 depending on if I get the guineas next week. I kept the cardboard so I can close off the MIL suite.

ellymayRans ~ Cute baby Marans! And I'm impressed that a chicken person can have long fingernails!

CCHICKENS belated happy birthday!

I finally got caught up

I am thinking mid july for chickenfest, 19th maybe? I really need input to reserve the barn.
I have to give the owner 3 dates in a week or so, he books the barn fast every year. PLEASE PM ME!!!
I want to plan a date that wont interfere with regular kids sports, racing events, 4H, state fair, kids activities period.

Been busy here, have a lot of pekin ducklings, lots of OEGB. 2 broody geese, 2 scovy. 2 hens both australorp not letting them, chicks wont survive in the egg coop.
have a 3rd goose I think broody very soon. She has made a nest also. Anyone wanting pekin ducks I have them, cheap to our members.
$1 a duckling. the rest are going to a neighbor or CL.

Off to bed, nite guys!!!
My DH and I would love ducks but we don't have enough yard for it-- our neighbor who doesn't like roosters would have a cow! It would be almost worth it to see the look on his face

HAPPY MAY DAY EVERYONE

Happy May Day to you! :)
I also agree that secure housing is critical, and I hope I didn't imply that it isn't. If you have coyotes, you have opossum and raccoon and probably fox, not to mention all of the feral domestic cats and dogs.

However, a dead coyote doesn't kill chickens, or people's dogs or children.

Gun safety is easy, but it has to be taught and learned. Killing wild animals safely is easy, as long as you keep your wits about you and pay attention to what you're doing. I hunt deer on a farm that pastures horses and cattle, and their neighbors have dogs that often get loose and run the woods. We've been hunting this property for decades, and there's never even been a close call.

People who shoot things they didn't intend to shoot are lazy and/or ignorant. I would defiantly not suggest letting someone you don't know personally hunt on your land, and I hope I didn't imply that either. Out of the people I Do know, there are not a lot of them I'd trust with that kind of job. But I think most people could find at least one or two friends or relatives to help out with eliminating predators.

Coyotes are badly overpopulated, and their numbers need to be reduced.
I put the emphasis on your quote because I agree with you. I am for this as well. my DH has been helping me learn and I am grateful I am not as intimidated as I used to be when I didn't have experience etc. But there are only a few people in this world I would feel safe with if they had a gun near me-- even if it is to dispatch nuisance animals. ((Tip: anyone trapping and shooting skunks, please take it out far away from any domestic houses like a couple miles if possible, our neighbor (different house) shot a skunk in his backyard and the smell was through our house in a matter of 15 min and stayed for WEEKS, about 1 month in our cars yuck))

Last night when they were all getting settled on the roost, one of the little comets decided it was a good time for a PDZ dust bath. She fairly irritated everyone around her, but it was kind of hilarious. :-D
I can see this-- very cute. I would have been dying if I saw this :)

I would try to fill in the gaps of the second room so they don't trip and get splayed leg-- also like others' suggestions of closing it off until they get bigger.

Even though you said it was tall, my dogs LOVED watching my splayed leg chick in its inside brooder (it was in a plastic clear tub) so they might be very curious and try to knock the box over to get inside. I don't know who suggested it, but totally recommend you keep the dogs out of the room if all possible.

Does anyone in the northeast have rhubarb plants or can get starts from them? We can find any around here. Bought some bulbs but who knows how they will turn out. Would like some starts! Thanks. PS Chickens are not loving this chilly windy day.

We filled the pond in because the fish died over the winter, and I don't have time to take care of it anymore anyway. Plus our dogs thought it was a swimming pool. Yuck!

Picture day!! Who am I kidding, it's always picture day around here.
Broody Suki. I forgot that I took her out to eat last night and left her off the eggs a little longer than I should have. I hope they are okay. I do dumb things sometimes.
Ah yes, swimming pool for the dogs = muddy feet every day I bet. No thank you! Love your pictures, those fluffy feet get me every time!

I recieved this birthday card yesterday and I thought you guys you would like it.

Love the card, happy birthday! :)

I had a tiny egg like that one time. When we cracked it open there was only white. I was hoping for a tiny yolk :D
I've heard those are sometimes called fart eggs. LOL

All six of my turkey eggs that went into lockdown hatched within a couple hours. I also have chicken eggs in there I'm hatching for another member. The first has hatched and 4 others have now pipped.
Woohoo!

If anyone wants a good, cheap way to deter night predators, I found these mighty lights at cvs. They work great. Motion activated and they wont turn off until the motion stops. Mine stayed outside buried in snow all winter, and still work. I have one on each side of my silkie coop.

Totally going to CVS to check these out. Brilliant idea (pun intended lol)!!

Shear Madness...anyone ever watched this? I'm watching right now bc they had silkies in the still they used on Hulu. It's a reality show about a lady who relocated to a farm. I might ffwd to the silkies!
Love that show, I am afraid they cancelled it though! It used to be on Saturdays after The Incredible Dr. Pol and hasn't been a new one in weeks. My chicken is such a cute naked neck!

Fun times yesterday with the family. ..Between the rain and break from baseball we did some mushroom hunting. .Yum..had with our Brats this evening for dinner!

Yummy! :)
