INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello everyone from Indiana. I live in the Bedford area and I am new to chickens this year. I got my first "12" in March and have added 2 silkies, 6 barred rocks, and 2 guineas. My "12" are leghorns,RIR,EE,Wellsummer,SLW and my baby, Daisy Girl is a ISA BrownThis is Blanche. I think she is a Wellsummer.

. I have to say that I feel totally obsessed with my chickie babies. I read all kinds of books, blogs and I love this website. Just wondering if there are any other chicken lovers in my area. I plan on getting some more this weekend. I love my chickie babies.

Congrats on all th new babies... Sorry for those lost or injured.
Keep me in ur Prayers please, this Sympathetic nerve block wasn't supposed t leave me feeling like this! It was a last resort procedure. Won't do another, hurts horribly!

prayers for less discomfort and a fast recovery.

Are you located anywhere near Indy?   I have 4 coop/runs attached to my barn (with a 5th planned).  I'd love to build a single system to raise and lower all the doors at once.  However, electrical/motor design is NOT my strong suit.

Yep! Rockville and 465, more or less. Multiple doors on one remote is totally doable. Its just a little more wire, and making sure the power supply matches the demand. Easy cheesy! PM me some details and pics of each door, inside and out, and I can start working the particulars.
By the way, the best place for used power antennas around Indy is Pull-a-Part on the east side of town. They have a website, it's 15 dollars for an antenna. A new one looks like about 50 or 60 dollars.

I will be going to Brad's tomorrow evening to pick up my part of the Beggarticks order and some chicks from he as well, so if any one has chicks coming from Brad that lives around the Columbia City or Fort Wayne area I would be happy to bring them back with me.
Also just put 34 eggs in lock down tonight. First attempt at incubating ever. They all looked good (i think) when we did a quick candle tonight. I will be extremely happy if any of these chicks hatch. Because I am really pretty that we did pretty much everything wrong. Pretty much took the incubator right out of the box and put eggs in it. Well not quite I was able to get my BF to wait a couple hours after plugging it in to see if it would hold temp for at least that long. It's sitting in probably the draftiest corner of the house. We lost power for 3 or 4 hours one day. But they all seem to have really good veining, from what I can tell, the air cells look decent compared to what I have seen on line. And there seems to be movement in them all. So I'm hoping that we at least get some to hatch and survive.
Congrats on the new chicks!

sending good hatching vibes!

Here's a picture of Bonbon's 4 bantam chicks! The two light colored ones are Old English Game Birds - Red Pyle color, the brownish chick in the back is a Mille Fleur d'Uncle, and the striped one in front is an Old English Game Bird - Wheaton color. (according to jchny, the egg donor!)

Below: These not so great photos are of my other "chicks" who are now 4 months old. I knew these photos would be too dark, but I wanted to put a name with the face-- because I finally named them!

L - R: "Ditzy" ~ a very fluffy beautiful Blue Splash Silkie pullet who isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer; "Bixley" ~ a pretty Blue Silkie pullet who has the fluffiest feet (too bad you can't see them-- or the faces of the blue Silkies); "Smalty" (smalt is a blue pigment) ~ a handsome Blue Silkie cockerel who hasn't caused any rooster-related issues yet; and "Eliza" an Imported English Orpington pullet ~ Blue Splash. jchny is now the owner of Eliza's brother, the Blue Roo.

Although they're the same age, the Silkies have always acted like the Orps were their parents. Now Eliza is pulled in two directions-- she loves her Silkies, but is really anxious to join the flock of 5 LF hens (who aren't very welcoming). Then, to confuse things even more, my only bantam hen Bonbon has four bantam babies.

They are all precious! I just LOVE your splash orp, her markings are beautiful!!!!

Okay, here we go!
If you have chickens, I recommend having lots of large bushes! We happened to have a lot of foliage when we started having chickens over two years ago, and I've noticed how much they rely on them to duck into when seeing a hawk, loose dog, etc. I've mentioned before that we're going to plant a few more bushes (as large as we can find them) to help them feel safer when I have them outside of the fenced-in area. There's an open area of grass between the fence and the "nature preserve" in the far backyard where I often take them. They always seem insecure as they do their running/flapping/squawking routine down the hill. Ornamental grasses work well, too, and they love scratching around foliage. Some large bushes (like Virburnum) have low horizontal branches where they like to perch in privacy. [rule]
This quoted weird, but I wanted to say I agree so much with this!! My girls are mostly in a woods and have lots of bushes, some evergreen trees, and during the summer some thick undergrowth to hide in. I have never had a hawk attack my girls. Sometimes the best thing is the natural thing! :D
Since a couple people expressed interest, here's the recipe/technique for making Mayonnaise. If you don't want to know way too much about mayo, skip this entirely. Here we go. --- Oh, and now, a warning. Once you do this, you'll never buy the stuff in the store again. ;-)
Quoting this so I can find it again! I've been wanting to try homemade mayo, but have been put off by all of the reports of how difficult it can be. I will be trying this over the summer!

Welcome! :D Just wanted to say, your beautiful Blanche is actually an Easter-egger, not a Welly. :)

Congrats on the hatch!! Now comes the rooster paranoia. ;) I also wanted to say your splash Orp looks so much like my beloved Frou-Frou did at that age! So pretty! :love Although, I am a bit biased against the name... (Eliza's my sister's name, too. ) Mon cheri amour, le Frou, a quatre mois :love :

Before Miss Gray was attacked I was considering trying to find her a "pet chicken" home. She was not integrating with the flock well but is a very friendly little girl and will come like a puppy if you bend down and hold out your hands. Based on what I'm seeing right now she is going to heal well. She has laid an egg both yesterday and today...and she is a good layer since she started laying. She's 7 mos old. All of this to say, if anyone knows of someone in Northern Indiana that would want a pet chicken rather than a flock chicken, I'm still thinking of trying to find her a home. I just don't think she's going to be able to go back with the flock based on her personality and at least right now I don't have the facilities to keep her separate as a pet. She's had a great start in life on all organic feed (lacto-fermented from hatch), no soy, extra animal protein, etc. Someone suggested she might work with a more docile silkie flock. Who knows....I may change my mind.... These photos are Miss Gray before I trimmed back her crest. After the crest was trimmed.
Where are you in northern Indiana? I have always admired Miss Gray and would be glad to give her a home. The only thing is, I'll be making a trip to Ohio in 10 days for chicks, and then I'll be picking up some Legbars from Brad at some point in the weeks following that, so I don't know if I can make another trip if it's too long. I'm in Whitley County. Let me know, but no pressure if you decide not to rehome her. :)

Hi all! This is a short but silly video of my Bantam assortment from Ideal Hatchery. I'm very happy with them.. I got 30 chicks from them and only one or two passed away. There's also a few in there from TSC that someone got for a birthday present and couldn't keep them. Not to mention Pepper, the Brahma hen trying to balance in the orange cord! ha ha

Hey guys so here is what I have that II am pretty sure I can trade give away or sell:
1-2 blrw cockerels. Very young. Come from excellent stock
1 blrw cockerel with excellent lacing and stunning coloration, but his type is poor. Someone who is good with genetics could probably use him because of his crisp lacing and other desirable traits
1 cuckoo marans pretty sure this is a boy.

Black copper barnyard mix pullet. She is laying and laying well. Lays big giant cream colored eggs. Hoping to trade her for a buff orpington. VERY GOOD LOOKING buff orp that is just about to lay
May have a black blue laced wyandotte pullet depending on what I get color wise.
