INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I thought I would jump in here and post some pics. of my meager flock. This is Bo jangles my Black Star Roo that I got from Emilyof indidana. He is young and just now trying to impress the ladies. I have not heard him crow yet but she said she had. This is Hickity Pickity. She is an Australorp and has beautiful sheen to her feathers. She looks a little ragged right now after her little mishap with the neighbors dog.

Bossy and white Beard my 2 EE. Bossy met the neighbors dog too hence the tattered tail. My latest additions from RK 2 leghorns, SLW, GLW and a Lt Brahma. Names from top to bottom is Ivory, Pearl, Rosa, Blanco, and a yet to be named SLW . These are the first birds that I have had in several years and I am remembering a lot that I had forgot. Love to watch them out scratching in the yard. My little dog Bigen a Feist seems to be Bo jangles arch enemy and he stalks him constantly. He pushed it a little too far yesterday and lost a few feathers. It slowed him down for now. Thanks for looking.
Looks like one of your Leghorns, maybe your light brahma and your GLW are roos.

Yes, do share!!!  My friend Julie (Chicks in Hats on Etsy) has her daughter put a hat on a chick then jump out of frame real fast...but I haven't even attempted chick portraits sans chapeaus, because there is no way these chicks are sitting still!!!

It takes a few pics to get a good one. Little chicks stand pretty still especially if they are in an unfamiliar spot. i.e.. a red pillow on th back of a couch. I take pics next to a window during the day for natural light, with the camera set on picture stabilization macro, and quickly snapthe pics before the chicks have time to get squirmy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. :)

Curiosity question - I've been noticing on this thread that a lot of you have talked about setting eggs under broody hens, but almost no one (at least in the short time I've been on) has mentioned breaking on. Is there a reason beyond personal preference or breeding programs? Does it have an affect on the hen's health or state of mind?
It all depends on if you want babies or not! Lots of folks don't want any chicks at the time their hens go broody - they want eggs to eat :D

Quote: I use those kinds of herbs in the nest boxes. They help repel mites/lice, etc.

I also like to have various herbs growing where they can help themselves. Animals that are "in the wild" will help themselves to various herbs when they have a need for their various healing or nutrient properties. I sometimes offer various herbs free-choice to my birds. I don't like to "force-feed" anything as I believe they'll take it if they need it.

But I do love using herbs in their nest boxes. Not only for the repellent attributes but because I LOVE the smell in there when I do :D

I know I am afraid of that too. Comb on the LH is not nearly as red as it looks in the picture. I have never raised Brahmas and was not sure about the neck hackle. It isn't pointed like a roo so I was keeping my fingers crossed. The GLW I was noticing it yesterday about how pointed the neck hackle is and I am afraid you are right. I guess it doesn't take much longer to dress three birds if that's the case. (we built a whizz bang plucker).

I break them by putting them in an all wire cage lifted sitting on saw horses. One day and broke then I put them back in the coop for the evening. The important thing is to make sure there's airflow under them. It's the warmth under them that will keep them from breaking

If you can, post pics and we can help figure it out. I wonder about that too, my 2 oldest GLW hens only allow Red, the GLW roo to mate them.. Red is currently in jail again for biting mom. They are plastered against that cage, talking to him.. UGH. It makes me think the hens stick with one rooster only? who knows.
Oooooooh you have chicken math baaaaad :lau I need to check out my RK I want to add more BBB turkeys.TSC is all done this year for chicks.

They are just :love beautiful babies!
So precious! Congrats and hope the hatch goes well :fl

O my don't I though! ! Hahaha!

To add to that I am having the best day! I hatched my first very own NN! It's a BCM cross with feathered shanks! I can't even begin to express how happy I am!!

I've been wanting to get some herbs out anyway; now I have a good excuse! I let the flock out in the yard for the first time the other day. Most of them seemed a little bewildered at first. But not Penny. She immediately set to scratching moths up from the grass and grabbing them out of the air. It was kind of impressive!

Happy Mother's Day!!

I wanted to give a quick update on my incubation project!!!!

Day 7 has come and gone and we are fast approaching day 14. Of all the eggs I set, only 3 were clear! I am excited as all of the EE's and AM's are developing!

Then I have 2 BCC (only one was clear), 1 SF (2 of those were clear) and then all of the blue marans!!!! I bought another Little Giant (TSC was having a huge sale and it was $5 off) and hooked up a fan that I bought from incubator warehouse and temps/humidity has been doing great with this hatch! I am so excited for day 21 to get here and it can not get here soon enough. It has been really fun showing my DBF and our daughter the magic of developing little baby chicks. My sister an I are even in an "unofficial" incubating and hatching competition. She is winning because I have had the worst luck with incubating. We are now both incubating chicken eggs. any hoooo....hope all the mother's on the thread are enjoying their day!!!!!
