INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'll put my two pennies in this also. I have a cat (fuzzy wuzzy) my daughters cat. He stays outside in our barn or on our deck and sometimes in my bass boat! He is not a stray he does free range where he likes. Is a great mouser and I like to think he keeps our barn from being over run by vermin. Does not bother the chickens. Not even the smallest chicks! This surprises me I figured he would have some chicken nugget snacks but he don't mess with them. I'm not much if a cat person, I don't mind them just like to see'em outside more than inside. Not all outside cats are strays. But there are a lot of farrel cats roaming the country (and city) side! I say get rid of them how you choose.

I feel the same about cats but not all cats are alike just like all dogs are not alike.

I admit I wasn't thinking about barn cats out in the country. I guess it was presumptuous of me, but I was thinking of a crazy cat lady who puts dishes of cat food on her back porch to feed all the mongrel strays in the neighborhood, and then calls them her pets and gets offended if you suggest they're pooping in your garden.

My rapidity in taking this perspective probably stems from my own current situation - I have just such a crazy cat lady across the street - so I'm admittedly biased. Also, I don't think the op's description sounded rural, but again I admit I presumed.

I agree that there's a big difference between having a couple of useful barn cats around a farm, and feeding a herd of mangy, diseased strays in the city or suburbs. My comments were directed toward the latter situation, not the former.
I can see that being an issue in small lot areas or apartments. Sick barn cats get put down here. For two reasons, first I can rescue a healthy cat and put the sick cat down for less than treating the sick cat, second sickness spreads way too fast. Now an injured cat that just needs a week of rest, that we can do but nothing too pricey.

Quote: I knew there was a good genetics person on here. I have a sex link question. Can my RIR rooster mate a Bresse hen and the chicks be sex-linked?

You have to remember that she has a crazy chicken lady that lives across the street from her and you have to look at things both ways. I have a neighbor that lives next door(about 200 yds) who's dog has killed 6 of my hens (3 on to different occasions). I have the legal right to shoot this dog if on my property but then is it worth it if I have to live by him. He did pay for the birds but that's not the point.

Here are a couple random pics from today.
One of the Wheaten Marans wondering why I'm bothering her during her turn in the nesting box!!

And this is my favorite EE hen, I call her Redtail. Her head is not usually this poofy but it is a little chiller today.

When should these girls start laying? They were hatched the second week of Feb!

Well I finally got some pictures. I have to apologize ahead of time because my chicks did not get the memo from Kab's or any body else's chicks who cooperate for pictures. Mine did not for even a minute.

These chicks came from Brad.

Russian Orloff (I think) BLRW and Partridge Wyandotte Buff Partridge Brahma

These two are unknown also from Brad

I hope I have these all labeled right
Isbar I ordered 5 of these and she sent 6

Breda I also ordered 5 of these and she sent 6

SFH I ordered 3 of these and she sent 5 Not a very good picture but I just love the face.

Coronation, Light and Silver Sussex Your not taking my picture Is she gone yet?

I ordered 3 each and she sent a total of 11. If I understood right the dark are the silver. The coronation and light can't be told apart until they feather out.

These are the chicks I just got this morning. I have no idea which ones are what because none of them are marked. But they are supposed to be Red & Silver Gray Dorking, Blue Orpington, Silver Penciled & Partridge Rocks, SC & RC RIR.

Lastly, the chicks that we hatched. The first group are the smallest ones.

Sorry for the pic overload

Congrats! I had to show my 14yr old. ..I said...see I'm not the only one that's got it bad! Hahaha

Well my broody was successful on her first hatch! Looked like 2 hatched, but one I found dead. Another egg was pipped. So I brought the live chick inside due to it getting cold and not having the broodies separated from the rest of the flock and the pipped egg in the hatcher. I didn't want to loose the others, too.
