I had a 2nd sumatra start to go broody she was on day 3 of not leaving the box. I gave her some eggs today and BAM off the nest and no more growling. She even let me pet her, something I rarely attempt with most of my chickens. But she was looking at me just right and I thought why not. I have to say the solid black eye of the sumatra hen is something. It can be quite intimidating when they are broody but somehow quite a nice loving eye too. I left the eggs out there for tonight to see if she will go back to them.

So of the two CL I hatched, the boy that had the exposed navel passed just a little bit ago. I had another from one of my own eggs that passed yesterday. On the upside I was so pumped on Mothers Day to hatch my first very own NN and I now have 2 more!!! I love them! Sorry did I say that already! ! Lol!

I have 4 Marans eggs left to hatch that I took from my broodys and 1 has externally pipped. .then I'm done!

I've been working on hatching what seems like since June of 2013 Lol...of course on and off but geez! I have to say though that I did dry incubation this last time with weighing and that's the ticket. I was surprised that some still struggled to lose enough weight! Really blew my mind!

I'm sorry Delaware, not a white leghorn. You could creat some using a RIR rooster and Delaware hen I believe.(rir carrying gold and Delaware carrying silver). The brain does not work very well when you have only been up 30 mins and it is 7 am

Yup, Rhode Island red rooster with Delaware hen will make red sexlinks. And I understand totally. My brain does not function properly between 11 pm and 8 am.

I knew there was a good genetics person on here.  I have a sex link question.  Can my RIR rooster mate a Bresse hen and the chicks be sex-linked?

What color is the Bresse? If she is white, then I would assume no, not by color anyway. I don't know what kind of white Bresse carry, recessive or dominant, but either way a genetically 'white' bird can't (typically) be used for a sexlinked cross. Either the offspring will be all the same color split to recessive white, or the offspring will all be white. What you need is a genetically 'silver' bird like a Columbian, Silver Laced, or Silver Duckwing hen, which would then share that silver gene with her sons.

I'm not familiar with the Bresse, so I'm not sure what other colors they come in. If your birds are something other than white, though, then the answer is, 'it depends'.

This rain is going on too long! My oldest girls are demanding to be fed inside their coop and are expecting lots of treats. They have been getting fruit and vegetable leftovers the last week. Too many trays being brought in by drug reps to our office. I'm the crazy lady after a week of things sitting in the fridge....NO! Don't throw that away! My chickens will eat that! I get a lot of shaking heads.

I lost 4 young birds to a neighbor cat last week. She just killed them and let them lay. At least a raccoon or other wild animals wouldn't waste the meat. I was so mad. My favorite EE out this new flock was killed. I named her Cadbury, because well, she looked like the inside of a Cadbury egg, my favorite Easter treat. My neighbor denies that her 6 outside cats would do such a thing, but was real quick to come to.me crying saying my dog tried to kill her way overpriced chickens the other week. I had her come to my backyard where the chickens were free ranging and 8 had 3 dogs sitting in the yard with the chickens. One of the chickens was nearly ob top of a dog. I said I didn't think my dogs would do such a thing either. They may have chased them a little because well, chasing a bird is kind of what Aussies do. They herd. The neighbor and. I are at an impass. My dad set out a trap....He hates cats.

On the upside, I.met with ellymayRans on Monday and took a couple Roos and a few young ins off her hands. We had a wonderful chicken talk and some adult human talk. 4 boys and a ton of chickens! I could do chickens, but no don't think I could raise 4 boys. Wow. I took my pup along and we stopped by a forest and she swam. Monday was at least halfway nice. The rest of this week has been crap. I'm constantly wanting to check on my new additions to make sure they don't drown. I kind of had to make a quick setup since I came home with more than I planned. You all know how that happens!

Chick crazed - if you still have the two roos and anyone is going up that way from So In or coming down from there to my way (French Lick area), I would take them off your hands. Oddly enough, my DF likes roos more.

Now...I am on the hunt for an EE that is light colored.

I do the same thing and you are not alone!!!! We get lots of food in our office too from drug reps. When my co-workers see me packing up fruits and veggies they say " let me guess, it's for your chickens." And i say "why yes it is!" I too get head shakes along with some eye rolling, but hey, at least our chickens are content right????!!!!!

I am always happy to learn new things about genetics, so if ki4got knows something I don't in regards to the Bresse, I'd be glad to hear it! And you are not alone. I always get the glazed-over look whenever I try to talk genetics to, well, pretty much anyone. I'm relatively new at chicken genetics (genetics in general really, as the only exposure to it was in my general Biology class back in 2011-2012), and there's a lot of things that make my head spin when I try to figure them out, but I find it all so fascinating that I can't help but try!

Bresse are dominant white. So based in what was said here, it won't work. Any Bresse cross I've hatched has been all or mostly white.

I'm so happy. A guy answered my CL ad and bought every poult I had. All 18 if them.
And I have more hatching now! 4 in the hatcher and more pipping.
