INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I woke up this morning and have been frazzled ever since. One of the first things i do in the morning is check on my incubator. I have no idea what happened but my incubator spent 5 hours at 75F early this morning. I know because my DBF said he checked on it last night before he went to bed and then again this morning at 5:30 when he left to go do a walk marathon thing with his parents. My eggs that i got from ellymayrans are due to hatch this coming wednesday, and now i'm devastated because i might not have a good hatch now. I have no idea what happened to the heating element, and it was a brand new-never before used Little Giant. The fan that i hooked up to it was even still running. I moved the eggs to my spare back-up incubator, but now i have two diffferent hatches in one incubator with one due to go into lockdown tomorrow. It never ends......

3 out of 4 of my girls are extremely friendly!!! When i was taking their most recent pictures, i decided to sit down on the ground. My BLRWs and my BR then came over and flew up onto to my shoulders and climbed onto my legs. Then they started talking my ear off and fighting over who had the best spot on my legs and shoulders. My EE was stand-offish but i know thats just her. Funny girls, they bring me some much joy with their personalities!!!

so sorry that happened! I'm hoping that it ends up turning out okay and at least a couple hatch. That really stinks about the cracked egg-- I have no experience in this at all but I've seen pictures of other eggs all wrapped up and it didn't look like as much padding. But I've been at the PO tons of times in the past few weeks and some employees have no problem dumping or tossing boxes wherever.
I have a BLRW from the hatchery. I'm thinking she is not breeding quality. She has not started to lay yet. I have not decided if I'm going to rehome her or not. But whey compared side by side with a breeder, she is not striking at all. Still when she is off in her own corner of the pen she is pretty.

I have to say Thank you to @racinchickins again. My top breeding RIR rooster is now healthy. His surgery went well and his foot is much better, not swollen at all.

My BLRW from various breeders Brad had connected with didn't turn out well in the lacing and color dept. They definitely have too much gold in their hackles and breast feathers, especially Goldie. They are great layers and since I am not breeding them, its not a big deal. And Goldie is faster than lightening, let me tell you. We should have named her Road Runner...smh. Their type is great though, so I'm sure the coloring could come eventually.

Oh no! I lost my post lol.

I admit I'm a bit snobby on the topic. Out of the 6 chicks I bought I have 1 right now that I've decided is worth keeping. Maybe that splash cockerel but I don't want my only roo for my small breeding pen to be a splash. I'm a bit upset actually that I didn't get any black pullets. They're handy to have to darken up your blue or to widen the lacing if it's too thin. Lol sorry tangent there.

Anyway there's a lot of birds that have been bred with GLW because you get birds that sorts look like blrw but they have a brassiness that is very very difficult to get out. Anyway breeding for a few birds to have for yourself is definitely different than breeding for selling! So I can't argue with that. It sucks that you can take 2 of the best show quality stock in the world and still only a few of the babies would be breeding or show quality (though they would have the genetics and that is important as well...it's just much more work with less reward than getting 2 breeding quailty together). Stupid genetics lol. Anyway they are trying to get blrw accepted to the APA so i hate that hatcheries have already messed up the breed by breeding with the GLW and polluting the breed like that.

That brassiness is tough. Almost impossible to get out completely. I really hate that it happened.

I think breeding from those birds would be such a huge hassle as to be not worth it unless you are the most dedicated of breeders with extensive genetics or breeding knowledge. If you did I would definitely be very careful to mark the line so you know who has that in their background.

Wish I could report that I was working on building the brooder but this weekend will be another "wasted" weekend. I started getting sick on this past Tuesday and I got dx today as having pneumonia
hmm.png
Never had it before, surprising since my asthma history is full of bronchitis etc. Got a
strong antibiotic Levoquin ? Pharmacist said it was very strong so we will see. My chest xray showed the pneumonia but the PA said my chest sounded better than what she was expecting. Taking a breathing treatment as I type.

I did go ahead and ordered a Brinsea Ecoglow 20-- so excited to use it instead of a lamp! It came Thursday. While we were waiting for my name to be called at the clinic, DH started asking if I still had the water nipples for a poultry waterer. He started scheming but it made me glad that he was thinking about the chickens. .

We had put a old wooden box in the coop just in case someone wanted to use it (we didn't have enough "warm" days left last fall when we finally finished the coop in November to build next boxes and they weren't laying either). One of them started using it and now most of them use it now. I'm surprised all 5 hens are sharing it, especially as nitpicky as they are sometimes.

Well, that's about it from my neck of the woods!

That's what I told DH when Goldie was feathering out to be so gold-- I bet a GLW was in their line! Nellie isn't as much as Goldie but I cringe because their whole aesthetic is messed up with those darn gold feathers...

Please do not worry! Since I can't have a rooster, it won't matter because I can't breed them. I wouldn't though even if I could. :)

Haha sorry I didn't mean to be rude. Even on the Internet I often speak/type before I think.

I understand your frustration. I am sure I could rant quite a bit about it but I will just leave it at this. Hatcheries do a great job at mucking up breeds lol. ( no one take offense to that, I have some hatchery birds that are great in their own way)

Yes I have high hopes for the egg production of my tetra tint and holden comets. But I have read of people on these forums who have bought 200 rosecomb bantams just to get 1 show quality.
