Any opinions on giving shipped eggs to a broody? Are results better for shipped eggs in an incubator? I need to get some eggs under 2 of my sitting hens. I would prefer good chicks but don't want to waste good eggs if the incubator would be a better option.

Also I have lots of eggs in lockdown that should hatch by Wed. If anyone is interested in some product reds, or black sex links, send me a message. I might have a few sumatra chicks too but I did not set a large number of their eggs.

First time I gave shipped eggs to a broody: 1 out of 7 hatched.
Second time: 0 out of 5 hatched


My theory is that shipped eggs do better in the incubator because folks have them upright and stable so if the air cell is detached, they have a better chance.

BUT...
What about incubating in the incubator and then putting the chicks under her right after hatch... That may be a good option if you switch them in at night so she's on them all night long before she discovers chicks. Or possibly give her the incubated eggs right before hatch?

She has taken forever to feather out, but all of a sudden, she is gorgeous. And, she is as big as the roos from my some of my other breeds. I have to say it was a pleasant surprise.

Thank you. I really like how these heritage reds look. I'm so glad you got a hen. The roosters are great but mainly all I have hatched right now. Of all the eggs I hatched out this winter, I might have 5 HRIR hens. My low % of heritage RIR hens is the main reason I keep hatching eggs. We have eaten a few of the younger mutt roosters and even a EE rooster. Still we have too many non- breeding young roosters and we like them a bit larger for eating.

@SallyinIndiana, I just had an amazing hatch sent from Kab. I would say that 16 of 18 eggs were viable on day 10. So I think it all depends on how far they were shipped and how well they are packaged.
They sat upright for 24 hours before I put them under the hens.

Please help me with these colors!

All 5 are Partridge? That's pretty straight forward, yes?

Top - Are all 4 black or is one a blue(the second from the left)?
Bottom - a blue(just 1 this color) and the weird black OR 2 blues? The unknown blue/black dude is in top left and bottom right for comparison.

Top - No idea... 2 Buff, or are all 3 white? There is one that is very silver compared to the ones that look really yellow.
Bottom - the yellow guys almost have a little stripe down their backs.

yes, they were crowing. the smaller one went to a 60 acre farm. The larger to my pot. The other EE roosters started pecking him really really bad when he started crowing. He made a nice pulled BBQ chicken lunch for me and the children. nothing was left over though. I'm thinking the one you took is a rooster too as the others that look like him are showingrooster tail feathers. You'll have to come pick out a hen.

Thanks. These were sent form TN. I'm letting them rest for now. I gave some EE and mutt eggs to my BLRW broody. My first broody summatra already had mutt EE eggs. That leaves me with 2 semi broody sumatra hens that will be wanting eggs soon. If I had not moved the sumatra hens last night I would have 2 sumatra hens sitting on wooden eggs. It is amazing how the egg production goes down when the majority of the hens start going broody.
