The hatching has started for the first batch of eggs I set in my newest incubator. Dh is rushing to set up a brooder box. He had one set up, but did not realize I wanted 2 separate boxes to keep the red breeds in their own boxes.

Pretty babies!

My 3 kiddos are all covered in egg yolk. I gave them one this morning and they flung it around off their beaks and they look rather scruffy. I don't remember that ever happening when the kiddos had a mamma. She must clean them up. I was going to do some photos but they look like they've been in a food fight

Been a busy week for me. Drove to Bargersville to meet with SallyinIndiana and ChickCrazed for some chickens. The new Roos and pullets are doing well. The boys could not wait to get to my girls. It's like they have been to my coop before. I took them out of the car and straight to the backyard they both went! By the end of the night, all the girls were tucked safely in the coop with the boys guarding the door. So Megan, I am definitely happy with them! Lori, thank you for having me up to your place and showing me your processing!

On another note, we have successfully trapped and disposed of a possum and a cat that I'm pretty sure had rabies. It wasn't one of the neighbor's so we didn't have a problem dealing with it.

I did some major cleaning around the yard and coops. (With much help from the dogs) And I am getting so antsy for eggs!!

Sorry for some of the losses lately. It tough doing all this work and losing parts of your flock. The chick pictures are killing me! I want more!

Oh I love the stories about the babies Julie [Mother2Hens]. They are adorable and it makes me excited for Bella's to hatch. I went downstairs to check on her this morning and I'm pretty sure that I heard a tiny chirp from one of her eggs. It could be my wishful thinking but I think we will have little chicks soon. She only has the three eggs and they are all a cross of a bantam roo and LF hens. It should be interesting.

CRSelvey ~ So did you hear peeps? (I haven't caught up on the thread, so you may have already announced the hatch) What breeds are original parents-- the bantam roo and LF hens?

I need to get a dust bath set up in the coop. They're doing a pretty good job wallering up their run, but I'd like them to have something indoors for rainy days and winter time.

So I scored an awesome plastic parts bin. It's about two feet by two feet wide and a foot and a half deep. It's heavy-duty plastic, half an inch thick, and when it's half full of dusty stuff, the whole flock won't be able to tip it over.

I've read that a lot of people use peat and ash, some add DE and some don't, some use sand or various other things. I like the idea of peat because whatever goes in the litter will just make more compost for me later. I was trying to think of a way to sift ash from my burn pit in the back yard, but honestly I put some nasty stuff in there that I don't think would be good for chickens, even after it's burned down.

Then I remembered that I only use hardwood lump charcoal in my grill, (Kingsford is for people who like eating kerosene burgers. Guhnasty.) and because I'm really lazy, I haven't dumped the ash can under it in a very long time. :-D

So the moral of the story is that being a slacker pays off in unexpected and delightful ways!


ETA: If anyone is paying as much attention to me as I secretly think everyone should, you will have noticed that almost all of my posts are edited. The reason is that I foolishly submit my rough drafts, then five seconds later I re-read them and find several things I want to change. Then five minutes later I find several more. For example, this is my fourth edit on this ETA alone. Now you know. I'm sure you'll sleep better for having that mystery solved. ;-)

Yay!!!! I'm soooooo glad they settled in quickly and are doing well!!! They are both so handsome I miss seeing them in my yard

. My girls are happier though. And I got my first teeny tiny egg from one of Ozzies girls - 20 week old Marans pullet!!! It was so cute!! My very first egg from a chick I raised!!! Pretty cool stuff and worth the wait!!
