Since the playhouse is going to be temporary, I would wait and ask for forgiveness. Just ask about your final coop. Also once the shed style coop gets walls and a roof, little ones can be moved in even before roosting bars or nesting boxes are made. They do need venting even at night but a temporary nesting box can be a cardboard box.

I do know that the coop does not have to be the color of the house - most of the coops around here are red and the house is not! My girls love their roost so they would be very unhappy without one, but roosts are not hard so I am not worried! We'll figure it out, I just have to remember to call tomorrow!

So I think my Silky hen has finally gone broody. She has been sitting in her nest for most of the day. My question is, when would be a good time to put some more eggs under her, she is only sitting on one and also is it okay to leave her in the pen with her mate. It is just the two of them in the one en-closer and whenever I have tried to separate them they get very agitated. I don't want to do anything to upset Scarlett because I want her to sit on eggs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time with a broody hen. Also should I just put her eggs under her. I have been saving them everyday and I also have some bantam and top hat eggs, along with copper marans. I figured I might be able to sneek in the polish eggs because they are the same size as hers. Any suggestions.........

Woohoo! Good news about our historical status and chickens/coops! My hubbie finally found the complete document, all 145 pages, and on pg. 71 discovered that poultry and anything related to poultry is exempt from any of the added historical restricitons! They cannot ask us to get special permits or restrict us. We are just bound by state laws of cleanliness and treatment of animals (well duh!) as well as not being able to build a structure on our property that is bigger than what the state allows without permits.. Yippee! So excited!

when you give her the eggs, they can vary in size and color. She won't care. What will matter I think is mixing hatch times so try to avoid giving her longer hatching duck eggs and shorter hatching chicken eggs.

So I mentioned to Mother2Hens of my bantam Cochins putting themselves in their night cage every night. Essentially I just open the door to their temp tractor and their cage and they basically go in on their own. I'm pretty sure they learned by repetition of doing it every night but it still cracks me up.

I love the raised beds, I'm working on a garden with raised beds too. You are much further than. Worked in the yard all day today, cleaned the coop, and then took the kids for ice cream for helping me

I am still doing the old fashioned garden, we finished it today

her are my chicks they are ees and two silkies what color you think the grey/blue chicks will be as adults

Really hard to tell. Possibly blue, lavender or could totally change!

im back again lol so schools almost done will be done in 1 week and 6 days so excitedcant graduate but i am going to hopefully if dad says use go to the excel center and get my diploma

Well thanks to my sister, I got another incubator after the circuit board fried on my brand new little giant. This one is a farm innovators. So hopefully I will have chickens sometime Wednesday or Thursday. I did candle them a little later on Saturday and I was happy to see movement in the eggs. I was so frazzled after I found my incubator not working.

Hey guys, I'm looking for an avian vet in north east Indiana. One of my ducks had a toe amputated by a snapping turtle last summer, and though I thought it healed correctly, there's some odd stuff going on with it now. Could someone point me in the right direction? My own search has turned up with nothing.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

BYC Indiana Google Map for detailed information
Cluck Acres (Curtis) set up a Google Map for just us INDIANA BYC’ers. You must first log on to your Google account or make a Google account. (If you have gmail, just use your gmail password). All you have to do is go to this link....http://goo.gl/maps/UShV6 . Here are the directions. You will see the state of Indiana.. Zoom in to where you live and then click on the red button that says Edit. After you click Edit you will see a hand, blue pin point and a zig zag line on the map. Click the pin point and drag it to where you live on the map. After you have placed your pin point then click on it and you can edit your description by adding your county. If you want to change your blue pin point to another icon or upload your own then up on the right of that box click the pin point icon and choose others or upload your own icon. If anyone has problems with this feel free to ask.

flyladyrocks~ I read ahead and saw that you found out the info you needed. Congrats! (And yes bradselig, you were correct in thinking that lilmizscareall lists Irvington on her avatar). I also want to mention that we had a very active member from Irvington named Toodlesmom whose carpenter brother was planning on building a coop for her. She was so excited, but sadly, her brother found out he has terminal cancer. Toodlesmom said that she didn't feel right being active on the thread since she didn't have chickens, but we encouraged her to keep in touch because it would be a nice diversion from her reality. Anyway, if you ever have questions, I'm sure she'd love to hear from you (or anyone). I know she did a lot of planning and research so that's why I thought she'd be a good resource.
