INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Goats love thistle!! They will clean up the nasteast overgrowth you have, trust me my barn never looked so manicured! Lol everyone should own a few
But if I would have a goat to eat these thistles, they'd eat my strawberries too! But I got lots of other thistles they could eat. I really would like to have a couple of goats sometime. As long as they wouldn't sound like the ones on this video I found!

So I've totally neglecting the site and haven't even logged on in like a month- sorry! spring is a busy time, planting and with first time chicks - well now i have a question.

my chicks are about 4 weeks old and i couldn't handle the smelly butts in my house any longer, so they went into the new coop. now i dont know if i just didnt notice it before because they were in one of those large tubs like youd see in TSC, but now they have more room to roam and one looks like shes walking all crossed legged and falling down like shes white girl wasted! ahh! i know when i got the chicks one had a bit of wry neck? if thats how you spell it, but it seemed to have corrected itself, and im not sure if its the same chick or a different one.

Often this is a thiamin/riboflavin deficiency.

If you are feeding medicated feed, stop immediately. Aprollium is a thiamin blocker.
For quick action - get a bottle of CHILDRENS POLY VI SOL NO ADDED IRON. Put the drops in their water. Do this very quickly.

You can also feed raw liver chopped into tiny pieces which is the more "natural" route.

Your "funny" for the day. Copied from an email I got:
The one for Edgar Allen Poe was disappointing. I'd have said,

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A chicken blew across a road, to find
My beautiful Annabel Lee!

But the rest were funny!

Kab- Love them little fluffy butts!!! Sooooo cute
so adorable!

Thanks guys!

Very cute babies. They have such big fluffy .... I don't know, what are they? Butts? Pantaloons? Whatever that is, it looks great on them.

Beyond the fluffy cuteness, your run setup was what I was looking at in particular.

Tell me about the board that is embedded at the base of your fence. I can't tell if it's 1xsomething whitewood or 2xsomething standard dimensional lumber. How did you install that? Is it on the outside of the fence? Is the hardware cloth buried with it? How long have you had it? Would you do anything differently next time?

I'm curious because a re-vamp of my chicken run is one of my summer projects this year. I'm collecting bits of information and ideas.
Thank you. The bottom of the run is treated 2 x 4's. We didn't know when we built it that you aren't supposed to use treated, but we never had a problem with it. The hardware cloth is attached on the back side, and the whole run is set a little into the ground because the coop is on a slope. So it's not buried, but it's in some super hard ground, so something trying to dig under would have to really work at it. Plus the coop is inside or our pasture surrounded by 5 ft horse fence, so it's pretty well protected. The chickens actually like to spend most of their time under the coop itself. It's cool under there.

They eat just about anything lol. And you are right ever one should have a few. They are like cuter, bigger dogs. I have a boer goat that eats the leaves and berries off of mulberry trees. My dad had a goat that would eat jempsion weed. He even had one who got into a bee hive and ate honey.

Mine normally don't do that unless there is something wrong. Caught in fence, can't get inside, very stressed out (like at a show), etc. Mine also don't tend to make much noise until they see you. It also depends on the breeds you get, some are a lot quieter than others
