The rooster watch is horrible for sex linked chick hatching day too. All that excitement to watch a chick hatch only to see its head and think oh no its a male.

The rooster watch is the most frustrating thing about chicks. Even when they are "sexed" by the hatcheries they get it wrong about 20% of the time. I got lucky with my isbars and 4/5 were pullets!!! I am watching my Hedemora's carefully, the one I thought was a girl from feathering, stance and size got huge red wattles and is now very obviously a boy. The one I thought originally was a boy still has an uncomfortably large comb and manly stance, but the comb and wattles haven't turned bright red like the other. I am preying they aren't both boys!!! And I am on pins and needles over the two silkies. I still have a sinking feeling that crooked beak is a boy and have no idea what to do with him if he is.....

Good luck on roo watch!! The next 6 weeks it should get more obvious and maybe some of the pros out there can help. I only have experience with the single combs so my guess is as good as yours!

I have been dutiously working on my last run. I have it all painted and the door hung (that was a debacle, I really am not good at making doors). I am getting ready to go out and hang the hardware cloth. I took today off to do this and get my car serviced. Unfortunately netflix released the new season of orange is the new black so I am trying very hard not to sit and binge watch!!!! Boo netflix and your timing (and my lack of self control!!!). I think this run will be my last big project this year. I may build my bee hive and build deck boxes and have some fence to stain, but those are not necessary and timing is flexible. I'm looking forward to getting to relax a bit on my weekends and only tackle minor projects for the rest of the year!

Oh, and Gregor has started to bounce back. I am fighting with him to keep him in his sling. He is being a butt about it and would rather fling himself out of his sling and lay on his legs, but he lost so much range of motion and muscle tone by doing that. Now that I have him in the sling he is moving his legs around and getting range of motion back and even though he isn't strong enough to stand he is moving his legs and even his feet a ton more! I think we are on the upswing!!! I only wish I had tried harder to get him in the sling right away. I have a feeling he would be back to normal by now. Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks for the tea and sympathy. I'm hopeful I don't have a brooder full of boys, since I paid for girls! We'll see. I'll try and keep an open mind.

I was awful at building the door for the run, too, but hopefully we will make it work. So much harder than it looks.

Hey, here's something funny...unrelated to chickens, but thinking about the run got me thinking about the critters here in our little 3 acres of woods.

Last night I fell asleep in front of the TV and woke to the overhead light (bright!!!). DH had gotten up for a drink of water and something furry had run out of our kitchen into our living room. From where I sat it looked like a grey chipmunk. He thought it was a baby squirrel. It was very calm & easy to catch. When he released it, it acted confused--didn't run away very fast. Looked it up. It was a flying squirrel!!! So cute! Think I know how it got in our house. Glad it wasn't a snake.

Morning all. I am 516 posts behind, so about to go back and catch up, but first, I wanted to post these pics and see if you think my "Oprah" is really a Stedman.









She is not exactly crowing, but she has made a couple of strange "buzzing" sounds. She is not super aggressive, but she sometimes chest-bumps the other girls and I read today on BYC that her color may mean she's male.

What do you think?

ETA: she was 4 weeks old Monday.

It's hard to tell with those pic's, but with mine the "he" holds/grows his tail straight up and the pullets are straight out. Don't know you can tell by color.
that's just my experience but I am not an expert on EE's. Hope this helps

Anyone in IN interested in adopting a month old mallard... Can't walk right and I don't have time to go or it the care it needs... She can't straighten her legs, looks like she may have been in egg too long before I helped her hatch.... Anyhow I hate to do away with her if there is someone with a big enough heart to adopt a special duck.... PlEase let me know if you are intersted I will deliver

The littles got to go out with momma to the big bird run today.

Just love those little fluffy butts! They are so cute at that age where they are all fluffy and haven't started to get in the awkward teenage phase. Very cute!

Just wanted to pop in quick with a picture of my new momma. The chick standing in the feed bowl hatched last Sunday, the one peeking out from under her wing hatched sometime today. She is still sitting on 3 eggs. I am going to leave them until she kicks them out or gets off of the nest. Sorry for picture quality. Have a great weekend!!!!

Dad is in the hospital, ICU. We had him taken by ambulance last night. He was in congestive heart failure. His valve has calcified to the point it wasn't allowing blood flow more than a trickle. They ballooned the valve, twice and was able to get it opened enough to allow somewhat normal passage. He is on oxygen, and they are trying to get him drained out of all the fluids. He was having allergic type symptoms last 2 days, but when he started having chest pains and panting we called 911.
FDA still has not approved the 29MM replacement valve needed to do his surgery. He has an unusually large aortic valve, thats the hold up. They currently only allow a 26mm valve. Dr said he is stable for now but needs the surgery soon. It is supposed to pass FDA in July so fingers crossed. The alternative valve is too high of risk, it would mean open heart. He is 80 and Dr feels he couldn't survive the procedure. Please, keep my Dad in your prayers.

Heading to Star City to pick my 2- packages of bees up finally. A couple weeks later than they thought

We got ours yesterday too finally. Ordered in April, promised they would arrive in early May, didn't actually pick them up until June. One box had so many bees in it we are going to move them from the nuc to a full deep tonight.



Cat sat by us the whole time watching us put the new bees into their boxes. She seems awfully curious about these bees but has never shown much interest in the ones we've had for 2 years.



Also had time to slice up a cantaloupe and give some to the silkies.
