INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello again everyone! I've had too many things going on and became stressed and exhausted, but I am planning on getting caught up on the thread. If I don't read all of the missed posts, I feel like I miss too much and am out of the loop.

I've been keeping my 14 chickens (!) cool with 5 fans, a mister, a patio umbrella, water available in multiple locations, and cool treats like watermelon, grapes, kiwi, etc. They've been hanging out under the foliage and deck during the worst heat and humidity we have here "down South." I've been doing a lot of landscaping and working on the chicken playground (partly why I am exhausted!) Since we can't keep grass growing in the fenced-in part of the backyard (because of shade/chickens eating it), I've been reworking the area into making a flagstone walk surrounded by more foliage, and of course. a cool chicken play area.

New members reading this probably wonder who this crazy chicken lady is!

I noticed this on eBay the other day. Looks like something bradselig could use. You could write it off as a business expense. haha

good morning to all, love the warm weather, hardly inside. But I miss keeping up with all of you and all the new peeps and what is going on in chicken life. My Welsumers are laying the cutest little new eggs but no speckles, wonder if that will come in as they get older and the eggs get bigger? at least 1 of my BR's started laying this week, a real pretty Pink egg, its Small too.

the 1st pic, believe it or not is the BR's pink egg, the 2nd pic has a normal brn egg ( for my girls ) and the new Wellsie egg, hoping it will darken a bit and speckle up as she goes.

My EE baby is still tending to the injured Brahma, Begging to wonder if she will ever get better, as long as she don't seem to be in pain I am letting her try and doing what I can for her.

My Silkie Roo's are starting to top each other, is that something that going to be a problem? I'm trying to find some hens for them but no one has any they are willing to come off of yet?

Have 1 Rooster that keeps pulling the tail feathers out of another Rooster, so that Rooster's name is Stubby lol.

have 1 EE hen, 1 BR hen, and a Welsummer /EE cross that I need to rehome, they are just flat mean to the others. If anyone is interested pm me please, I don't care if you want to eat them. I cant deal with mean chickens, the cross will attack me, she has got me bleeding 2x now and I'm done. Hope I didn't offend anyone. Sorry if I did.

I could even bring them to Chicken Fest for a Processing demo if anyone is going to do that, or just to give to someone if they wanted them for any other reason.

Hope everyone has been well and happy. Welcome to the new peeps in case I forgot to say that before

The spots seem to come and go on my Welsummer eggs but if you didn't get her from a breeder I bet your eggs will be pretty light and probably won't darken up much! I'm sorry you ended up with so many meanies! I'm lucky and I've never had a mean chicken.

My white silkie "pullet" has been flaring her neck feathers and sparring with my Blue Isbar rooster. I know other breed hens do this, but do Silkie girls do this? It has me a bit concerned that she is a boy! Someone please reassure me!!!

I have a showgirl that is more dominant than the silkie roo I put in with her. They would spar. Ive also had a chick constantly attack my hand when id reach into the brooder. Always thought it was a roo but turned out a pullet as well. So there is still hope lol

LOL that makes me feel a bit better. I have not heard a crowing silkie yet (that I know of). The other two pre-pubescent boys in the pen were having a shrieking contest this morning. LOL I really need to get a recording of how BAD they sound!!!

We're way South of those - but I am just blown away that it is fair time again already -- where does the time go every year? Our's is the second week in July, I know a couple of kids who have some projects to get finished up, lol.

I was shocked that Marion county's was in June - I thought we always went in July! We've never done 4-H before but will do it next year so this is a big year for us to check everything out.

Bartholomew county fair has the chicken show on July 4th this year. I'm almost positive it was not on the holiday last year when we went. June is a good time to try and beat the summer heat. I'm not sure if we will make it to Columbus for the Bartholomew fair. But I know we plan to go to the chicken show in Lebanon. We make a day out of it. There is a nice doughnut / sandwich shop up there as well as a feed mill. Plus I'm hoping to meet some breeders of the breeds I want to breed full time. I would like it very much if I got pointers from them or if they even stopped by my place to show me on my birds how to pick the best of the best.

My white silkie "pullet" is doing the same thing. We have a kiddie pen set up within the big girl chicken run. There are 2 chicks in it: a white silkie about 12 weeks old, and a blue sizzle about 8 weeks old. The hens don't seem to care a thing about the 2 chicks in the baby pen, but the silkie keeps getting big hair everytime a hen comes close to her playpen.
I'm determined not to have any roosters I have to get rid of, so she better turn out to be a pullet if she knows what's good for her!

I know Jerry Foley was in Lebanon last year with his BLRW, it was fun to meet him. His birds are AMAZING! Last year the weather was awful! I'm hoping it is better this year!
