the cold rain, beats 95 heat though.

It started pouring rain yesterday and the chicks got soaked! Their momma was content being in the rain so I brought them inside to dry off and get some lap time. These are the chicks I got from RK by chance and one I got for free cause she had pasty butt. They are 7 weeks old now. Pretty sure I have a pullet and a cockerel.






Our new kitty Max was very interested in the chicks and sat by us the whole time. We found him a few weeks ago outside and took him to the vet to get checked out. He had no collar and none of the neighbors claimed him so we decided to adopt him and get him neutered. He's very lovey and our vet says he's about 5 months old. Now we have 3 cats, two are black males but one is long hair and the other is short hair. Lucy was very unsure about him though.

he looks like my barn cat. My barn cat is the best drop off cat we have ever had. Our other rescued cat won't kill anything. He even tried to mother an escaped chick once. Thankfully I found the escaped chick before our black cat did.

LOL - we had a cat that brought home a pet chipmunk one day - spent the whole day carrying it around, careful as can be, sleeping with it, etc - needless to say, he wasn't much of a barn cat.

I was shocked that Marion county's was in June - I thought we always went in July! We've never done 4-H before but will do it next year so this is a big year for us to check everything out.

That is a great way to approach it, too, I know anytime the kids start talking about taking on a new project, etc we make a point to scope it out in preparation for the next year's fair (this year we'll be spying on the poultry side of things as I think DS will be doing poultry next year)

For anyone participating in Indiana 4-H next year -- it was just announced at our leader's meeting that a new enrollment policy will be in place beginning this fall. All enrollment will be completed entirely online (some counties may have still previously accepted paper enrollment). Enrollment for next year will begin November 1st, 2014 and will continue through January 15, 2015. All 4-Hers must enroll during this time period if they want to exhibit at their county fair or the Indiana State Fair (no extended deadlines with late fees as we had this year). If enrollment is after the January 15 deadline, they can still complete projects, but they will not be able to exhibit any projects at the fair. There is also a $15 annual, non-refundable, state program fee for any youth in grades 3 - 12, with a max per family of $45. This new enrollment policy is for the entire state and not just certain counties.

eta -- once enrolled, 4-Hers can still add/drop projects after the enrollment deadline until June 1 ( I think that is the latest date -- can't remember for sure)

Anyone out there looking for a cabinet incubator. This could be a good deal. It is not the completely digital model but it should work. That said i went out and bought the digital model. Then I have not turned off my search so it came to my email.

One of my Ameraucana cockerels just crowed. I guess I have to face the fact that they aren't babies any more.

At least I have my modern game bantams I got from brad Monday that are still kind of babies. And the meat chickens that won't stay small to long. The birchen modern game is very clingy. She follows me everywhere. She will make a great pet lol.

And today I am setting eggs.
I am setting:
-11 BBS ameraucana (should of been twelve but I stepped on one)
-4 Plymouth Rock (probably will get one more today)
-4 polish eggs (covered by a white rock rooster. I normally don't set mutt eggs, but anything mixed with a polish has to be adorable)
-3 mottled Cochin bantam eggs (I am really excited about these ones and I will probably get one more today!)
-2 Rhode Island Red eggs (covered by a bantam Ameraucana, which should give me olive eggers)
-1 Easter egger egg (also covered by a bantam Ameraucana. So more Easter eggers)

And I can see myself sticking eggs from tomorrow and maybe even Sunday in the incubator after I already set them today lol. (Ya more chicks!) plus brad is hatching some polish egg (I would type the color but I will spell it wrong).
