INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

...
And I can see myself sticking eggs from tomorrow and maybe even Sunday in the incubator after I already set them today lol. (Ya more chicks!) plus brad is hatching some polish egg (I would type the color but I will spell it wrong).
Think about how you will do lockdown if you set eggs on multiple days. I have found a 5 day space is needed between multiple set dates as sometimes hatching takes a bit longer and then the hatcher incubator still has to be cleaned and reset up. If you are planning to set and hatch in the same incubator, then the question becomes when to raise the humidity level and how long any early hatches might have to stay in the incubator until that last egg hatches.
I'm not saying it can't be done but that having a plan of action greatly helps the "stress" of lockdown time for you.

If I put in eggs one or two days after I set, they just go into lockdown with the others. I don't mess with the multiple lockdown thing even though I have multiple incubators.

Hello! We are BRAND new to chicken raising! We are looking for some older (6mo-1 year) standard chickens to purchase (no preference necessarily on breed, but prefer brown egg layers). Does anyone in the east central Indiana area have any for sale? Or know of someone that does? Thanks for your help!!

I got a net to help catch some of the free ranging chickens. It is much larger in person than it appeared on Amazon. But it was a great price and it folds up so I'm happy. Here is a link if anyone else is looking for a net large enough to catch a full size over 10 pounds rooster.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FM6WJ0Q/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The net is much much deeper than the amazon pictures.

Here is another good option. And customer service is perfect with very fast shipping at Premier1.

So, my update...waiting on a referral for an MRI because my youngest has caused me a really painful shoulder injury. I've been toughing it out for two months and can't tough it out any longer. Haven't been able to sleep through the night due to the pain. *sigh* Of course that has interfered with work and life and building the run/improving the coop. DH has really taken over the coop, which is great. The kids are helping out with the birds. Couldn't do it without them.

The birds are in the garage for now. I set up a box fan for them and they love it. Ideally we will get them into the coop this weekend. We'll see how it goes. DH can get the new roof on in an afternoon, but I had planned to whitewash the inside and then put down vinyl. Sounds simple enough, but doing everything with one arm is anything but.

Behind on work, too! Stressing me out.

Trying to focus on the kids, though, and make sure they have good memories this summer. Managing my mood while feeling like my left arm is being torn off bit by bit is kind of a challenge.

So far my rooster count remains at 1. Otis (fka Oprah) crows, has a big red comb coming in, and loves to mount all comers, including the guinea hens. I do think both the guineas are hens. Watching their wattles. DH has taken to calling Otis a mean name, but as long as he doesn't actually start hurting anyone, he'll be allowed to live here. If he gets mean, he's going bye-bye. Good chance of that, I think.

Jury is still out on Lynda's sex, but she started sprouting white feathers this week. She is the blue Silkie, really almost black.

Finally found all the herbs I wanted for my raised beds around the run. Hope I can keep them alive until I get this thing built!

Hope you all have a good day/week/however long before I log in again.

Sorry to hear u r hurting so bad. Speaking from experience: I have learned the work will still b there when you get t feeling better. The children will grow and move away. Children are my priority too! Mine are all grow and giving me grandchildren now, and in some cases my grandchildren are old enough t give me great grandchildren! Through it all...the work got done...eventually! Hope u get t feeling better soon!

Welcome to Chickens AND our thread. You've come to a great place for newbies! Don't b afraid to ask ANY questions. Keep in mind the only dumb question is the one never asked. I don't live in IN so can't help with your request but I'm sure someone on here can guide you t where you can get what you want.

The incubator has now been shut off. Last hatch was 9/15 Midget White turkeys. I'm as relieved now as I was excited then when I finalyl turned it on. I love watching them hatch, but dealing with hordes of young'uns is exhausting. Time to take stock of what I ended up with this year, and see how everything grows out. And oh yeah, need to build some more pens......there never seems to be enough.

Welcome to the Club!

I would STRONGLY recommend that you think long and hard about buying grown-out chickens. I started my flock that way, against the advice of several experienced chickeners. If I had it to do over, I'd buy day to week old chicks from one of the experienced breeders active in this thread, and raise them myself. That's my .02.

Welcome Bymaster! This thread has been an incredible resource for us, we got our chicks 7 weeks ago and I don't know what I'd do without these wonderful folks! Whether you decide to get chicks or older hens, both the Hancock and Marion County fairs started today. I would think they would be a good resource for finding chicks/birds. The Marion County poultry show is tomorrow, Saturday at 10:00AM. Hancock's was today at 8:00 AM. We will be there for the poultry show tomorrow. There also is horse stuff from 10-4 so my 10yo is in heaven - chickens and horses. If you think you may go PM me and maybe we can meet up.
