I know people that have used the gutters for a long period of time, without any issues. Not something I would of decided to add without the research

Since you've researched, do you have some links you could give me that tell me what the metal is and what is in the coatings that are used on them?

yes those metal ones are almost exactly what I was looking for. The exception being that for the chicken feeder I would not want the feed to come to the top as they would fling it out. For the ones that I will be making, they need to be less than 24 inches wide and not super tall, when in position, the top of the feeder storage can at most be 23 inches off the ground. Otherwise the door will not open correctly.

Is there a limit on depth, front to back? How high off the ground do you want the trough?

I did not save any links at the time, I wish I would just to have them. And it was months ago that I looked things up, so it is no longer in the history of my conputer.

In other news, I've got the feeder design worked out. Super easy build. My design can be cut and assembled with all rectangular pieces of plywood; no funny angles to mess with. I'll mock it up with cardboard to get the trough depth worked out, and I'll test-drive it on my chickens. This is all very timely; I've been dissatisfied with my feeders thus far.

The real trick will be making a cover broad enough to keep snow and rain out. I'm not sure how much protection is realistic without putting it under some kind of tarp.

Basically this. But you can build it yourself for a whole lot less than 50 bucks. And I'll add the divider for oyster shell, and it will be tuned... actually, now that I think about it, I'll make it adjustable so you can tune the feed depth yourself. After all, pellets will flow differently than crumbles, and cracked grains will be different too.

This gets better the more I think about it.

Okay guys Im bumping this because I need some smart peeps advice. What is this??? Its like rubber textured, but looks like undigested crumbles. It is definitely poop. Sorry its gross, but I really need to knowif I need to worm them. They are 7 weeks. Acting fine. Several of these poops today.
