INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I know every hen is different but my BLRW Rosie is one of my best 2 broodies. I had 4 go broody so far. The three sumatras and Rosie. Rosie would puff and be angry at the world. I liked her she acted like many a pregnant lady I have met. But if your hen is rejecting real eggs I'm not sure what you can do other than break her broody spirit.

I bet she would be okay then, she is acting very much like a pregnant lady. All puffed up and glaring while she is on the nest, and you should hear the way she talks to me every time I pluck her off the nest! LOL. I bet she wouldn't reject the real ones if I took away the plastic ones. I only gave those to her as a test to see if she was really broody. I set three of them in the nest in front of her and by morning they were all under her. I wish I could let her hatch! This is my first broody and I would love to experience it. I don't feel comfortable doing it until I see if anyone else in my flock falls ill though.

My apologies for not getting this posted yesterday. Reservations for Chickenfest should be in now. But I am sure that there will be no problems if you turn them in a little late.

Wow. Caught up on almost 500 posts! Life has been too busy with work, chickens, dogs, and pregnant sister and SIL. I am hoping to make it to Chicken fest. I want to buy chickens if people bring them. Someone at work actually thought it was weird that I hadn't bought any new chickens in awhile.

I got my first egg from this new flock on Father's Day! One of the EEs laid a pretty little green egg. I gave it to my DF and he said he wasn't sharing!
amwchicken ~ You inspired me to not feel overwhelmed at the thought of catching up on posts! I've had a hectic month (like everyone else) and I don't like to miss any posts. After reading that you've caught up, I decided to go back 130 pages to mid-May to refresh my memory on posts I had hurried through, and then start on unread posts. I've enjoyed my Saturday night read-a-thon! I'm not completely caught up, but you lit a fire.

Btw, on my screen your egg looks more like the golden egg that the goose laid.

Hi, all!

I'm super behind, but still alive! LOL

Went for an MRI for my injury yesterday and had a panic attack. Yay. So I don't know when I will ever get caught up with life! I am over a month behind on work, so booooooo...but trying to make the most of the summer and that means I haven't been online very much.

Good news, chicken-wise...the birds spent their first night in the Diva Shack last night!!! We haven't finished the run, but hope to work on it today!

Here's a pic of the girls (and one boy), their disco ball, their newly white-washed interior and newly-vinyled floor. Gotta get them some big, new feeders because I know they are about to grow like crazy in their new home. As you can see, Farrah the white silkie has a lot of pretty black splashes now! And Lynda the blue silkie might have some white splashes. Jury's still out on his gender. Otis, the EE cockerel has grown on us. He is so protective of the flock. He even disciplined the guineas when they flew out of the brooder on top of my van, while they were still in the garage. I still think I have one M and one F guinea. Looking forward to watching those waddles take shape!

Everybody is doing really good, chickens and humans and dogs, here in our neck of the woods. With the exception of my injury life is good. IF YOU'RE IN SOUTHERN INDIANA & you're not going to ChickenFest, come out and see me 7/19 at the Plum Creek Farmer's Market! I am going to be doing a book signing there. They have live music, sarsaparilla on tap, corn hole, a petting zoo for the kids, fresh eggs, goat milk, produce, crafts, soap, snacks...lots of fun.

I wish I could do ChickenFest but that day ended up being the only day I could do the Farmer's Market in July, and I needed to work. I hope you all have an awesome time and post some pics!!!

Hey, I was one of the ones who could not commit, and now I have to work. Sorry! I hope that doesn't screw anything up for anyone! I hope you all have a great time.

Mother2Hens - I can never get my green eggs to show up right in a pic. Being the first egg, it felt like a golden goose egg!! I hard-boiled the little thing and it was like heaven. SO happy to have my own eggs again!

leslea - If I end up not being able to go the the CF, I am close enough to you that I could come by and see you! So, either way, I'll be seeing a fellow BYC'er. Good luck with the Farmer's Market!

My DF got rid of the skunk we trapped yesterday morning. Someone in town gasses them or something for $25. My DF said that was worth it. The one time his dog got sprayed by a skunk took forever to get rid of the smell.

Would anyone that is bringing chicks/started chickens to the Chicken Fest want to sound off on breeds you are bringing?

I'm just going to throw out there some breeds I am on the lookout for:

Ameraucana, Blue Andalusian, Buckeye, Salmon Faverolle, Olive Egger, Marans, Orpington (Lav or Choc), Silver Laced Polish, Speckled Sussex, BLR Wyandotte, and Silkies.

I would take eggs if I knew my incubator worked...I'm probably going to set some this week and just see what happens.

Here is what I currently have available and can take to Chickenfest! I will only bring them if someone commits to buying. Don't want to haul more than I need to down there.
I'm willing to wheel and deal, so don't get scared off by price.

*2 naked necks (Marans cross) $5 ~2 wks old
*Several Birchen marans/crosses (one will likely be barred, may some are pure but can't tell apart from mixes) $3 ~2 weeks old
*Young trio (looking like there is atleast 2 pullets) LF partridge wyandottes $15 for trio
*Splash silkie cockerel SOLD
*Partridge barthuhner pullet $15
*Chocolate orpington cockerel $10
*Splash modern game cockerel $8
*Birchen modern game cockerel $8
*Black modern game cockerel $10
*Splash with gold showgirl (unsexed) $10
*Light Brahma pullet SOLD
*Easter Egger cockerel FREE
*Buff/Partridge mix Brahmas (3 available, all unsexed) $6 each/$15 for all
*Cream Legbar pair $30 (don't remember exact age but around 3-4 months old)
*Cream Legbar pair $25 (again not sure of age but closer to the 2-2.5 month old mark)
*Bielfelder pair $30 (roo is small for age but starting to grow quite a bit now) NOTE: I'm pretty sure the pullet is a bielefelder, but may possibly be a non crested legbar these autosexing breeds look so much alike at young age. I'm hoping by chickenfest I will be 100%. Ask Pipd how good I am at telling these breeds apart lol.
*Cream Legbar cockerels various ages from the 3-4 month mark to several weeks. FREE with other purchases.
*Silkie cockerels/roosters. I have a white, partridge (beautiful color, not good crest), and blue with gold leakage all hatched beginning of feb. Have a blue with silver leakage who is a little younger than the previously listed. Also have my original splash and silver partridge/grey roos available. $5 each on 4 younger cockerels and the older Roos are FREE to good home. All very well behaved.

Hatching eggs I should have available
Lavender/lavender split barred bantam cochin
Silkie (mixed color flock)
Silkie/showgirl in partridge, white, or black/blue pen
Crested cream legbar (Still getting some pullet eggs)
I can probably round up some Birchen Marans as well, but aren't laying very well or hiding eggs.
Also mix eggs from NN, white rock, and brown leghorns covered by the Marans roos.

Definitely would be fun to meet you! One of the books I will have at the Farmer's Market was set in Birdseye, and has a few scenes at the convent in Ferdinand. :)

But I will probably do another day or two this summer, depending on how well this one goes, so there will be another chance, I hope. I go to this market frequently, anyway, so I figured "Why not? I will be there, anyway!" (And I had over 100 paperbacks I discovered in the move, so I really need to sell some of these things before the DH finds them.) ;)

I am sure I am going to be bummed about missing out on ChickenFest, but besides needing to make some $, it hurts my injury to drive for very long, so it is what it is. Boo for me, but I do hope all our ChickenFesters have the *best* time and post pics. A group pic would be wonderful!
