kab and brad ~ You two are so superficial! lol-- just joking--I know that breeders must create perfect specimens. At least kab isn't as ruthless in getting "rid" of inferior looks. She wants to find nice homes for Silkies afflicted with leakage or other unsightly abnormalities.

I guess I won't be able to breed my Splash Silkie because she has a bit of that dreaded "leakage." Poor thing. She's not very smart, either, but she's sweet. And my Blue one seems to be missing her face!

I also won't be able to Show either of my Silkies. Darn!--lol-- because I trimmed their "bangs" tonight before their bedtime. And I'd be disqualified for using the word, "bangs." I can't wait to see how they act tomorrow with their newly found vision!

so as its the end of a very sad day i have 7 chickens and 1 turkey all shut up in their coop. my hubs found one of the bodies when he came home, he wanted to make his own rounds and i guess i missed it on mine. he's just as upset as i am, which i found surprising, i didnt think he cared so much. i dont think coyotes would have left any bodies behind, so im suspicious of the neighbors dog again. but like he said the fault is our own, we thought we could have em free range and have no problems.
i loved those little turkeys, my tom was just getting his gobble on and strutting looking all cute. and they would bark and run up to me on their silly long legs.

do i get more birds? do i wait til next year?
hubs says hell make me a big run this summer but i dont know

oh and still without real power - living on our little gas generator

shellybelly ~ I am so sorry! I can't imagine how upsetting that would be. I think most of us can relate to that feeling of failure from losing flock members, but unfortunately accidents happen. It's important to remember that your flock enjoyed a great life with caring "parents"-- my DH has become pretty attached to our chickens, too. You just learn and go on being a poultry mom. Some lucky new birds will be able to join your flock. I'd strike while the iron is hot, so to speak, and get your DH started on a plan for a run.

I hope your power comes back on soon-- that is so frustrating! You did have a bad day! It sounds like the weather is improving for an enjoyable holiday.

Okay....so I have been in hiding for over a year as a chicken owner....well last week the HOA caught wind and they are giving me ten days to get rid of the girls. I refuse. So here is what I am asking. If I get a letter together for the homeowners in my neighborhood to sign can I run it by all of you for feedback in getting my chickens legal to keep? I would appreciate any and all help in drafting the letter. My mom is still mourning Petries' untimely death and I can't imagine what would happen if they all had to go at once.

The items in the letter to the HOA will have limits on number of chickens allowed per household (I was thinking four?) and the standard that Marion County has for housing fowl including no roosters within so many feet of another residence (which will exclude roosters from our neighborhood altogether as I think it's fifty feet).

There is an animal control officer living up the street from me that I am going to ask to help on my behalf as far as basic needs. Feed, water, housing (both size and placement) etc.

I am concerned about how to put pest control in the best light. We do live along woods so there are possum and raccoon, as well as owls and hawks.

I am trying to see this from all angles and as I said I would value all of your input!

Delawaremommy ~ Oh no! It sounds like you've gotten good advice from our members. What about the politics part?-- Who are the people who make the decisions? Do you or your neighbors know any of them well?

The white chickens do look really dirty if I don't bathe them occasionally (at most once a month). They get a lot of visitors and I'm afraid the neighbors wouldn't like them as much if they had mucked up feet and dirty feathers all the time. It also gives me a chance to really look them over, trim beaks and nails, put Vaseline on their feet and give them a dose of Poly-Vi-Sol. Sometimes I just fill up a tub (the kind people use to water horses) with a couple inches of soapy water and let their feet soak instead of doing their whole body. This past weekend I bathed them and the littlest one was acting strange, like she was cold despite the 85 degree weather. I brought her inside and wrapped her in a beach towel. Our kitten, Max, decided she'd help to warm up the little hen. Was so cute! She laid right on top of the chicken while the hen slept.

atrueb00 ~ Aww! Years ago we had a beloved cat named Max. After he died, I became pregnant with our firstborn-- a son we named Max. Now our Max has a freaky story to tell about how he got his name! lol
@Minminme ~ I think this is a black cat, but the sunlight and shadows makes him look like he has unusual markings-- at least that's my perception. ha

I didn't even know there was suppose to be storms. I was on Facebook this morning and my step aunt posted stuff about how we were suppose to get tornados. I hate storms. But then I saw it was posted hours ago. All it did was rain here.
CHHICKENS ~ Our storms didn't start until 5pm. When the sky suddenly turned dark, the chickens started heading under a large bush (even though they could go in their coop or the garage!), so I grabbed the umbrella from a table and simply dropped it over the bush, hoping it would help a little!! I took this picture from the back door.

We'll miss you at Chickenfest! No, we're not sending photos-- you have to come to see us in person and be . . . um . . . pleasantly surprised. haha Just joking!
And don't feel too guilty that Minminme is coming all the way from WEST VIRGINIA and iamfivewire is coming all the way from MICHIGAN!!

We have a lot of large branches down. The biggest one fell on the chicken run fence. There was a little damage but nothing that can't be repaired. I'm in Steuben County. LaGrange County, our neighbor to the west, was hit harder. One of the elementary schools has major damage, there are uprooted trees in both counties, we didn't get power back until late this morning. I am very thankful that we are all safe. There was at least one fatality in our area.

Crooked House ~ That sounds like a scary experience! Glad you are safe! Btw, I think you were already officially welcomed by our thread-- I was away from the thread for a while, but Welcome!, and it's good to hear from you.

If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

BYC Indiana Google Map for detailed information
Cluck Acres (Curtis) set up a Google Map for just us INDIANA BYC’ers. You must first log on to your Google account or make a Google account. (If you have gmail, just use your gmail password). All you have to do is go to this link....http://goo.gl/maps/UShV6 . Here are the directions. You will see the state of Indiana.. Zoom in to where you live and then click on the red button that says Edit. After you click Edit you will see a hand, blue pin point and a zig zag line on the map. Click the pin point and drag it to where you live on the map. After you have placed your pin point then click on it and you can edit your description by adding your county. If you want to change your blue pin point to another icon or upload your own then up on the right of that box click the pin point icon and choose others or upload your own icon. If anyone has problems with this feel free to ask.

LOL I love it!!! I fully blame you for my Turkey math so it is only fair that I give it back. I keep dreaming about your sweet little Royal Palm hen so Royal Palms have been on my beady little brain. Then I found Sweetgrass Turkeys and think I am in love with those!!!

They are gorgeous. I just got three sweetgrass poults from porters. (And mottled blacks and penciled palm) (and blue slate from TSC) (and midget white from an auction).....now that is turkey math! Can't wait till they grow up!

I'm new to BYC, but I'm here from NW Indiana! I have 2 adult polish roos, 1 adult polish hen, and 14 polish chicks that I hatched from them with more on the way. I also have 3 Showgirl roos, 3 RIR hens, 4 aracauna hens, and 4 black sex link hens.

Incubating has quickly become my favorite hobby. Thus far I have incubated polish chickens and guineas, and I have 7 peacock eggs in there right now.

I'm hoping to add a few frizzles to my flock soon!

I am so very sorry. As to whether to get more or wait - I would say give yourself a few days to process all that has happened and from there you will find that your heart will provide you an answer as to which is right for you.
