The easiest way ive found to break a broody is give them some eggs for a week or so and them take them away from them. Seems to work pretty well

Hello, I am also from NW Indiana and new to raising chickens.![]()
I'm so sorry!!! I was a wreck losing Carl and the guinea and felt the same way that you do, like I should have done more to keep them safe. It's the risk that we take free ranging. I know that my chickens are happier when they are out and I guess I'd rather one have a short but happy life then be stuck in a run all the time if they don't have to be. I agree with giving it a few days. You'll figure out what you think is best for your flock.so as its the end of a very sad day i have 7 chickens and 1 turkey all shut up in their coop. my hubs found one of the bodies when he came home, he wanted to make his own rounds and i guess i missed it on mine. he's just as upset as i am, which i found surprising, i didnt think he cared so much. i dont think coyotes would have left any bodies behind, so im suspicious of the neighbors dog again. but like he said the fault is our own, we thought we could have em free range and have no problems.
i loved those little turkeys, my tom was just getting his gobble on and strutting looking all cute. and they would bark and run up to me on their silly long legs.![]()
do i get more birds? do i wait til next year?
hubs says hell make me a big run this summer but i dont know
oh and still without real power - living on our little gas generator
My guineas chased a hawk that was on the tail of their favorite chickens once. It was the most impressed I've ever been with them. May they RIP...As a side note, I have never heard of Guineas protecting other birds except maybe from snakes. Guineas are bigger cowards than chickens, honestly. Mine will scream and scream and scream if they see something, but run away if it's bigger than them. Don't be angry at your Guineas. Sounds like they did just what Guineas should do.![]()

EE Roo through and through!Soooo....
Are we still saying pullet?
Other factors:
Age unknown - possibly around 20 weeks.
No spurs.
Not crowing - but has had significant increase in volume and honking-ness of voice in the last week or two.
Way more fighty than it used to be. This was the lowest bird on the order - now it takes flack from no one. It still hasn't challenged Queen Penelope, but if one of the other birds push, it pushes back.
Opinions?
Quote: I have lots of fertile eggs. I'm no longer hatching, so I've combined flocks. That means I can't certify any of my eggs are purebreeds. You are welcome to some if you want them.
You are right about the lighting, she is a solid black cat. Love the story about Max, such a good name!atrueb00 ~ Aww! Years ago we had a beloved cat named Max. After he died, I became pregnant with our firstborn-- a son we named Max. Now our Max has a freaky story to tell about how he got his name! lol
After the shipping disaster I had with Meyer hatchery, I decided to try ordering some more chicks. This time from Lancaster fancy fowl in p.a. I ordered 5 salmon faverolle s from them. They shipped out monday and got here today. They sent 8. Seven made it alive. 1 didn't look real healthy and died. So I have 6 that look like they will make it! Im very happy with John at LFF abd im gaining a little trust in the post office for future shipping.
Geez, how much you want to bet I spend most of my 4th of July trying to track down hatching eggs for the stubborn thing. She sat for six days before I started trying to break her. She is seriously determined. Boo. Anyone going to be in or around Indy tomorrow (or the north side of Indy) with a few fertile eggs? I'm thinking 3-6 tops.
Thanks...many of our towns are actually getting with the program...it's just my little town has a tyranny type people in office. Small town...always seem to take their lead from a few others. I am going through with the complete political process of getting everything changed but I am afraid without a little pressure like a protest and media...nothing will change.thats awful @thepoorguy
- the govt in Mich is doing similar things to a lot of prople statewide - i hope Indiana govt isnt "copying"![]()
