Of all things!!! My Chickee got t play on th freeway! Lol. The reason was unfortunate though. A semi carrying a load of Piglets rolled over. There were piglets running everywhere! Of course there were several not so fortunate t b able t run around but you couldn't help but laugh at the State Police officers and animal control staff trying t catch them. The driver had a little road rash on his shoulder but other than that it wasn't too bad. So now it will b 11 before I get t th campgrounds. Ugh!!!!

Just got off the phone with MyPetChicken.com re: Otis. They are issuing a refund, but...I didn't know this...if they made any more errors on my order (this makes one lost chick and one wrongly-sexed), they will refund shipping + the cost of my silkie (if he turns out to be a boy--gotta wait 'til October). They gave me a credit for a free chick, too, on a future order. Haven't thought that far ahead, honestly. Just wanted to share. I had no idea they would do more than refund the cost of the bird. She acted like they'd give me my whole order free (she called it a reship) if they find one more error with this one. I'd just have to send photos.

1. You should either move her, or fence her nest in.  Also, 16 eggs is way too many for one chicken.  You need to reduce the number to something she can comfortably cover all at one time.  She will rotate the eggs around, and they will all spend too much time on the edges and die.
2.  It depends on whether she has actually started incubating or not.  If she was off the nest waiting for you, I wonder if she has actually seriously started.  I would candle.  If you see some development, leave a reasonable number under her and check again in a few days for movement.  


ETA:  At the moment I have 7 broodies, and I don't want any more chicks this year......augggh!

7 broodies?! That is a lot of hens wanting to mamas! I hope some (or all) break for you and also, thanks for the advice! I removed some eggs to accommodate her size and put her my old coop so she is safe.

[COLOR=B22222]DarthLayer[/COLOR] - definitely candle. I just had this happen last week. (where did my chicken go, why haven't there been any eggs lately??) I candled the day I found her and numbered all of them. I put her in solitary as well. This week I candled and there was no change in the eggs. They were all fertile, but she just wasn't doing her job.  One was completely black inside...very close to becoming a stink bomb. I discarded all her eggs and let her out.  She wasn't happy and her man wasn't either.  The minute I let her out he ran over and did his manly greeting thing and had his way with her.

She was laying on 19 eggs and if I would have found her before the pile got that high, things may have turned out different. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks! I did candle them and they all look clear so I'm just going to see how it goes from here!

Someone posted on Facebook a little while ago that they were on their way to judge a showmanship contest and a pig was running around the free way. They picked it up it took it with them because it was going to get hit. How ironic! I wonder if it belonged to that semi trailer.

Around here you have to have at least one of the species of animals that you are grandfathered in with and can add as many as you want. But once yu sell all of them or they all die and you have none on your property you can't get them back again

Where are you? It may be a little different here, b/c what is being grandfathered would be the number of the animal, not the actual animal. But if you are able to have that number going forward then things would be good.

We are pretty sure we have over 1/3 acre, just need to confirm that, this means under current proposal we could have 24 chickens. But if we are just under that 1/3 it jumps to only 10 and that is painful. A huge blow to chicken Math. What is also painful is not being able to have goats. We may need to add 14 chickens and 3 goats to the equation rather quickly!

Indiana lol. I am over by Fort Wayne. Here the number doesn't matter, the species does. You can have 5 cows then say a ban get set. You can get another cow then some die and get 7 more. It doesn't matter. That's why I said around here because I know it can vary from place to place.

It's not too late to come to Chickenfest!

I've been busy preparing for Chickenfest! This evening I was making paper garlands, name tags, stickers, signs, packaging prizes, etc. My DH observed my devotion to the honor of chickens --lol--and said that he needs to form a Support Group for Spouses/Partners of BYC Indiana Members! haha He was just kidding me-- he enjoys the flock and know that I enjoy the thread. As I was working on Chickenfest, it reminded me of kinds the things I did for my kids' PTA/school events through the years. No wonder I went into "event mode" and started churning things out.

DH and I are leaving for Indy on Friday-- staying with friends Friday and Saturday nights and visiting DD on Sunday. I will bring Tshirt orders to people attending Chickenfest, but I won't have time to mail the others until Monday. I apologize, but besides Chickenfest, I've had actual job-work to do, so I'm my usual sleep-deprived self. Looking forward to a fun weekend.

Oh that is so sad for those pigs! Last time I was in Indy a double decker truck full of pigs was in front of me and I was about to cry. They are so intelligent and are treated so cruelly.
And yes, I eat pork. I'll stop after Chickenfest.

I'm glad that the accident wasn't worse as far as people are concerned, too. Hope you have a safe remainder of your trip, Minminme. And stop posting on the thread while you're driving!!!

If anyone comes to the Elkhart Co. fair, stop by the Bunny Hut food booth (best food at the fair -- fresh salads & subs made to order, bunny burgers & brats, mashed potatoes, noodles, Rise & Roll cinnamon rolls & doughnuts...we also have the lowest priced food -- every year lots of our customers tell us that.) Anyways, stop by the Bunny Hut because there's a good chance either my daughter Chloe or I (or son Benji) will be working in there (I'll be wearing my project leader name tag/ribbon every day even if I don't have my chicken shirt!) And if anyone wants to hear Chloe's Illustrated Talk it will be late Tuesday afternoon (pm me for details). She'll also be doing it at the State Fair the first Friday of the fair.
