INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

they get that tonight. with the ER no one was home till late to cook. but they are getting dogie cake to.  They did do what they were supposed to do. Just wish the vet visit was a different day and they would have been home and this wouldn't have happened... butt..... my Silkie is moving around a little this evening.  She had no big wounds, I really think it was more shock then anything, even the birds that didn't have a scratch on them were a little slow about ranging today.

I'm so sorry for your losses, and your injury. I can't believe the attitude of the police - that dog was off-leash and off the owner's property, destroyed your fencing to get into your property, then killed your animals and seriously injured you. Seems like they should be arresting the dog owner to me. You definitely have grounds to sue the owner. Their insurance should be paying for your medical care too. :barnie

So sorry about all of this. That's traumatic just to read.
Hugs to you...
thanks

@chick rookie I am so sorry for your horrific experience. Remember Rule Number One in the future: YOU call the cops first. I know so many people who have been screwed when the bad guy calls first, instead of the victim. Hope you get it sorted out and at least get compensated for your hens, and I hope you sue the pants off the dog's owner for your medical bills, pain and suffering, etc.!

So, I'm contemplating adding a herd of rabbit some time down the road. They'll be for feeding my family, and donating to extended family and such.

I know I can feed some parts to my chickens - liver and kidneys and heart. My question is, what else is okay for the chickens to eat? Can I just throw everything I don't want in the run, and rake up the skulls later? Should the chickens not be fed the bowel or intestines?

Along the same lines, if I shoot a squirrel in my back yard, can I throw its carcass to the chickens? Should I skin and gut it first?

Thanks in advance for answering gross questions.
Depending on your chickens and how many flies are hanging around on processing day, you might want to only give the chickens a little bit that first day and freeze the rest in small quantities too. The intestines got carried around my yard last year but not eaten. Then flies came and came within 30 minutes to an hour of being left alone, the intestines were covered in flies. The cats did eat some of the leftover other rejected processing parts but feathers and intestines were left untouched by both my chickens and my barn cats. We were processing roosters though not rabbits.

I am so upset. My precious Splash Silkie, Ditzy, from bradselig is missing.

I last saw her around 6:30pm. DH and I were working outside in the fenced-in back yard area, and the chickens were nearby. When the chickens started going in the coop, that's when I noticed her missing. It seemed unusual that Smalty (my Blue Silkie) wasn't calling for her. They usually hang out together and call each other if they get separated.

I am fearing that a hawk got her, and the thought of that is SO upsetting.
Around 7:00 the hens that were helping me remove a stump alerted for a predator. Usually they stand up straight and still. This time, they hunkered down with their heads bowed down. I had never seen that before. I looked up and saw a hawklike bird that was high in the sky. I typically see Turkey Vultures, and haven't seen a hawk for several months. I can't remember if it was before or after, but the two little bantam cockerels crowed. I didn't think much about it since they're just learning, and they randomly crow.
I read that hawk attacks are often at dawn or dusk.

I'd be surprised if it was a hawk attack because:
We have many trees and bushes for the chickens to hide in, so it wouldn't be an easy area to navigate.
Even though she's ditzy, she doesn't stand around out in the open.
Recently, we trimmed the two silkies' feathers around their eyes, and it was obvious that it helped them be able to see much better.
Other than the cockerel's crows, the chickens acted normal. When my third Silkie died suddenly in the dust bath a few months ago, all of the chickens were upset and made a big racket.

Additional info:
It seems really odd that Smalty wasn't calling for Ditzy or vice versa.
I found a place in the fence where she could have slipped out. DH and I throughly searched our yards, and our neighbors' yards on both sides. Our yards are fairly large, so I couldn't imagine a little Silkie going farther. We looked in every bush, etc. because a few weeks ago, I couldn't find both Silkies and after searching, they were found casually sitting inside a bed of tall lilies. I passed them several times, and they never made a peep.
During our searches, we didn't find any feathers.

I am hoping she will appear in the morning, but I know that's unlikely. I just can't believe that she disappeared.

Noted. I think I'll give them dressed carcasses when I have them.

I'm from north west indiana..plan to breed sizzles, silkies, and silkie easter eggers and frizzle easter eggers...I'm currently looking for show quality silkies. I would love to get to know breeders and keepers in my area!! I don't know many people here, but would like to!
Here are my two silkies, 5 months.
