INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Yesterday I had my first 1/2 dozen day. Very exciting! In the morning, I adjusted the coop and then nest boxes. I made the boxes a little darker and more sheltered, and eliminated all blind corners in the coop, and now they're using all of the nests. Yay!

I think the new hens are my three RIRs. I'm still waiting for the GCs and my one EE.

I am so sorry to hear this. I hope your leg heals well and that your silkie makes it. Had to look up LGD, it wasn't on BYC list of abbreviations. Does it mean livestock guardian dogs?

My rooster is the best with kids too, so strange isn't it?
I'm sorry... yes it is short for Livestock Guardian Dog. I have 2 Great Pyrenees.

This is Bear, he is the smallest of the 2.

This is Buddy, o and Isabella, ( goat ) he is the an xl dog and loves his job.

ok I need to stop now, after all this is a chicken thread... lol It's like pringles with me... I also have an Aussie ( the black dot ) that is awesome at herding and the Pittie tries to keep up... lol

I'm officially coming to live with you. I want a zedonk in the WORST way!!! I've always wanted to go to the exotic auction and just haven't gotten there yet.

I about hit the floor when you I read that you think he's calm and quiet! Make me wonder what a normal guinea must be like because he was psycho here! So glad he's adjusting well. I never did name him. We always just called the "The Guineas", then when we lost the other 2 he became "The Guinea".

I feel a lot better knowing I'm not the only one with a lack of eggs! Between the weather and stress I can't really blame them. My lil man is awesome. I don't know what we did before him. Granted, my spare time is pretty much non-existant now, but I have been able to cut down my work schedule to 4 days a week and still manage everything, so that has been nice.

My newest love! His name is Emmett and he's pretty much the coolest thing ever.

Wow! I had no idea. I know exactly where that is. May have to drive by tonight and check it out. That makes me so sad for the chickens and so glad that we don't support commercial egg production anymore!
He is sooo Cute!!!!!

Here are the chick's one week photos. :)

Here's their one day photos from last week:

Also got a cool pic of a bumble bee on a cosmo flower right by our tomato plant. Would love to keep some bumble bees one day.

Wow look at the feathers on my feet growing out... cool, and I'm still #1 lol
great looking bunch.

I'm so sorry for your losses, and your injury. I can't believe the attitude of the police - that dog was off-leash and off the owner's property, destroyed your fencing to get into your property, then killed your animals and seriously injured you. Seems like they should be arresting the dog owner to me. You definitely have grounds to sue the owner. Their insurance should be paying for your medical care too.

thanks, and the cops did finally take " my report " When DH got home from work and I told him about it he was mad as all get out. He called and was not nice at all... lol and a different cop came to the house and had a whole different attitude. We are going to try and get the cost of the hens back but it still wont make a difference, they are still gone and even though I make a little money off the eggs I still think of them as my girls. So glade you guys understand that most people think I'm nuts... Now that I have the owners name I have turned it into my insurance man and HE is going to go after him. But we drove by the place and it don't look like anything will happen... " cant get blood out of a turnip " kind a thing. the place was a big trash Heep, broken windows in the house so on and so on.

@chick rookie I am so sorry for your horrific experience. Remember Rule Number One in the future: YOU call the cops first. I know so many people who have been screwed when the bad guy calls first, instead of the victim. Hope you get it sorted out and at least get compensated for your hens, and I hope you sue the pants off the dog's owner for your medical bills, pain and suffering, etc.!
Thanks first time I have ever had something like this happen, and don't ever want to go through it again, hope no one does even thou I know it does happen poor ( I'm real bad with names and I cant remember it right off hand so sorry ) but it happened to them 3 times. We try to protect of livestock as best we can and sometimes it just not enough.

I am so upset. My precious Splash Silkie, Ditzy, from bradselig is missing.
hit.gif
I last saw her around 6:30pm. DH and I were working outside in the fenced-in back yard area, and the chickens were nearby. When the chickens started going in the coop, that's when I noticed her missing. It seemed unusual that Smalty (my Blue Silkie) wasn't calling for her. They usually hang out together and call each other if they get separated.

I am fearing that a hawk got her, and the thought of that is SO upsetting.
Around 7:00 the hens that were helping me remove a stump alerted for a predator. Usually they stand up straight and still. This time, they hunkered down with their heads bowed down. I had never seen that before. I looked up and saw a hawklike bird that was high in the sky. I typically see Turkey Vultures, and haven't seen a hawk for several months. I can't remember if it was before or after, but the two little bantam cockerels crowed. I didn't think much about it since they're just learning, and they randomly crow.
I read that hawk attacks are often at dawn or dusk.

I'd be surprised if it was a hawk attack because:
We have many trees and bushes for the chickens to hide in, so it wouldn't be an easy area to navigate.
Even though she's ditzy, she doesn't stand around out in the open.
Recently, we trimmed the two silkies' feathers around their eyes, and it was obvious that it helped them be able to see much better.
Other than the cockerel's crows, the chickens acted normal. When my third Silkie died suddenly in the dust bath a few months ago, all of the chickens were upset and made a big racket.

Additional info:
It seems really odd that Smalty wasn't calling for Ditzy or vice versa.
I found a place in the fence where she could have slipped out. DH and I throughly searched our yards, and our neighbors' yards on both sides. Our yards are fairly large, so I couldn't imagine a little Silkie going farther. We looked in every bush, etc. because a few weeks ago, I couldn't find both Silkies and after searching, they were found casually sitting inside a bed of tall lilies. I passed them several times, and they never made a peep.
During our searches, we didn't find any feathers.

I am hoping she will appear in the morning, but I know that's unlikely. I just can't believe that she disappeared.

So sorry M2H. My 2 white Silkies went walk about a few days ago and they didn't show till morning, I found where they escaped from and promptly fixed that problem. It is scary when you don't know. Hopefully you will come on a little latter and tell us your little one is back and safe.

I'm from north west indiana..plan to breed sizzles, silkies, and silkie easter eggers and frizzle easter eggers...I'm currently looking for show quality silkies. I would love to get to know breeders and keepers in my area!! I don't know many people here, but would like to!
Here are my two silkies, 5 months.

Beautiful !!!!!! I have never heard of Silkie EE's, that would be cool to see, Must keep us posted with that!!!

O and by the way... Welcome

M2H: So sorry that Ditzy has taken an adventure without telling you. I'm sure that's worrisome.
We're sending hopeful thoughts your way. Be sure to give us an update this morning.

MY TOMATOES ARE TEASING ME!!! Why is it nearly August and they're STILL GREEN?!?!?!

We have a volunteer grape tomato plant that has one cluster of 4 tasteless red tomatoes, the main patch is all GREEN! In atrueb00's picture of the cosmo and bee, I see a tomato teasing red. Does anybody have lots of red tomatoes yet?
hu.gif

The plants and fruit are doing great, but darn it-I'm ready for some red tomatoes!

My tomatoes are popping but I planted a lot of early varieties this year. To be perfectly honest I had cucumber volunteers in my tomato area and now I can't see a darn thing in there! I am lucky to find the tomatoes at all! I can't believe my cucs came back after the winter we had. I did not plan on it and didn't provide adequate space!

-- My EE are my hold outs too -- of all the different breeds (I know, EE is not a breed, lol) in my flock they are the only ones that haven't added at least ONE representative to the laying list, and are of course the eggs most anxiously awaited.

I'm jealous! I LOVE tomatoes, zuchini, and eggplant on the grill. It's just not the same without the homegrown tomatoes!

My Splash Silkie DITZY IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!

My DH woke me up at 6:30am -- he had gone out in our backyard beyond our fenced-in backyard, all the way to the end because he heard some crows crowing. Then he spotted Ditzy standing in the neighbors backyard! The have a picket style privacy fence, so she had slipped through. Besides wildlife, those neighbors have two large dogs that sometimes are out in the yard. Anyway, she wouldn't come to Jim, so I grabbed my blue Silkie, Smalty and some seeds and was able to coax her. I can't believe she is back!!!! We fixed the opening in our fence. I had been applying new chicken wire to the bottom of the wooden privacy fence, and a section with a small tree trunk had popped open.

Thank you for your support! It was comforting to know I had the thread to turn to last night when I was so distraught.

I just had my first small tomatoes start to turn. The tomatoes need the summer heat and at least where we are I think the cooler summer we're having is delaying them. I'm sure hoping mine turn before frost hits again!
