Hey everybody! I haven't had much time to be on here lately. Just checking in. We found out today we are inheriting my mother in laws flock of 12. So that will make 35 lf ; 33 hens and 2 roos, 9 bantam non silkies ; 2 roos and 7 girls, 22 silkies, and 3 ducks. Whew.....we are going to have eggs everywhere!

So where as everyone purchased their sportsman incubators? And which one did you get? I'm debating between the 1500 and the 1502. I'm not looking at price, but it like the idea of more room in the incubator to candle eggs. On the other hand, incase I need to hatch in the incubator, I'd be glad I got the 1502. I'm just doing research now (actually trying my hardest to not cave and buy one now and wait till late winter/early spring).

When I added up shipping and the clear door, it was the best deal for buying new. I looked at one I found on CL but it was not accurately described and it was at least 3 years old with a price that was not drastically different from buying the new one I wanted. After that wasted trip I bought the new one. If I had lots of money I wanted to spend on chickens and I had all the space in the world to breed and brood the chicks, the perfect setup would be the 1500 digital incubator with the 1550 hatcher. The 1502 is great at hatching but not keeping the eggs separated by breed in the hatching drawer. The 1550 can hatch more at one time and the various breeds can be put into different trays. Also hatching outside of the main incubator allows for better control of the humidity as you already know. And really only the hatcher needs a clear door if you want to watch the hatching.

Also the water reserve is only really useful for the hatching days. Egg trays would be a needed item with all of the newer models unless you modify the racks with hardware cloth.

Thanks! We found a couple copies of the Indy Star and will now be going to the fair for free on WEDNESDAY (instead of Tuesday, as originally planned). We'll wear our backyard chicken shirts, and be hangin' with the peeps!

She's a beautiful bird--but I think her head-poof is obscuring her vision. Does anyone have insight or experience that they can share with me about trimming feathers around the eyes?

pginsber ~ WOW! I love her! I've wanted a sizzle, and she is beautiful! The color combo is stunning.

You must have skimmed over my posts a few weeks ago about trimming my Silkies' bangs.

lol My son and his GF love to visit the chickens, and his GF even looks at BYC.com at times. She read that Silkies can't see well and trimming the feathers around their eyes makes a big difference. I knew that some of our members trim their Silkies, so I bought some 99 cent Kindergarten "safety scissors." I held each one while my son trimmed and his GF advised. We did the minimum, but enough so we could see their eyes. My two Silkies would hold still and then suddenly wiggle their heads, so you have to be prepared by taking quick snips. The feather hairs are almost like dust, so his GF would blow the feather dust away (like blowing out birthday candles). The change in their behavior was significant! They became much more active and interactive, and we felt good about opening up the world to them-- except for when Ditzy ran away for the night!

I live in Demotte but not "in town". I'm sure you guys will know what that means. I have about an acre on the west side of 65. I have about 34 chickens and 9 ducks. My neighbors all get free eggs and they are all very friendly so I've never had any problems. I picked up two chicks from an assorted bantam collection at Crown Feed and Supply. Pretty sure they are roosters. I don't mind and I don't think my neighbors will either but legally where do I stand? I am having trouble wading through web pages of zoning laws. I'd love to keep them. One is a Japanese bantam and the other is a red old English game bantam. They will both look really awesome in my flock and they have plenty of girls and space to share. Are smaller bantam Roos just as loud as their larger counterparts? I think I will let my neighbors know just in case they have any problems to let me know and I can try to re-home them. I would like to have some unique roosters. I hope I can keep them. Thanks guys!

maureenclaire ~ I happen to have two three-month-old bantam roos that were hatching eggs (from jchny2000) for my first broody hen. One is an OEGB Wheaton and one is a Belgian Mille Fleur. They both started crowing a few weeks ago, and they definitely aren't as loud as LF roosters, but they're louder than I thought they'd be. I live in a subdivision just outside the city limits, and I'm planning on keeping the Mille. The funny thing is that they both say, "Cock-a-doodle" and leave off the "dooooo"! So they don't really sound like roosters.

Just passing this along . . . your choice of course . . .The general consensus on the thread is: if it's legal, then there's no need to poll the neighbors because it can divide the neighborhood when people disagree.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

BYC Indiana Google Map for detailed information
Cluck Acres (Curtis) set up a Google Map for just us INDIANA BYC’ers. You must first log on to your Google account or make a Google account. (If you have gmail, just use your gmail password). All you have to do is go to this link....http://goo.gl/maps/UShV6 . Here are the directions. You will see the state of Indiana.. Zoom in to where you live and then click on the red button that says Edit. After you click Edit you will see a hand, blue pin point and a zig zag line on the map. Click the pin point and drag it to where you live on the map. After you have placed your pin point then click on it and you can edit your description by adding your county. If you want to change your blue pin point to another icon or upload your own then up on the right of that box click the pin point icon and choose others or upload your own icon. If anyone has problems with this feel free to ask.
