Next round of weed pics coming up. I had a request for the recipe again: 1 gallon vinegar, 1/2 c. salt, 2 big squirts dishsoap (I use an organic brand) -- the dishsoap helps the vinegar stick to the weed better.

First off is the thistle. On the left was a day after spraying. On the right was from yesterday. You can still see green on the stem, so I'm going to keep watching to see if it will eventually shrivel up. I may spray it again once an entire week has gone by.

I'm guessing the stem is green because when I first sprayed it the leaves kept most of the solution from reaching the stem.


These are the thistle & wild carrot/queen anne's lace (not sure which) that I mowed first and then sprayed. The first pic is right after spraying. It's hard to tell if it's doing much in the bottom 2 pics. I need to figure out which chopped off weed is which. Looking around at the bed, some of them are much browner than others. It might take the thicker stems longer to die off?? I should have left half the bed unsprayed to see what happened from just mowing -- if they would have still turned brown or not. The big test is whether these grow back....




The grassy stuff was drying up -- not sure if the stem of it closest to the ground will or not. Not sure about the evil vine. I'm surprised how green it still is. There are brown spots on it now, but I have a feeling this one may be harder to kill. May need a couple of treatments. Haven't checked it today yet, though. It's one I definitely need to eliminate -- it spreads everywhere!!

Need Hatching Eggs Pronto Please!
Tomorrow, my son is going to an engineering conference in Danville. I know we have a member from Danville and many nearby members, too. He could purchase a few hatching eggs for Bonbon late tomorrow afternoon. I'm looking for 2-3 Silkie eggs and/or frizzle bantam breed. Meanwhile Bonbon is sitting on an empty nest! Don't let Bonbon waste away on an empty nest!

I'm in Bargersville, so not drastically far from Danville area or maybe close to the road he is taking to get home. I don't have any of the breeds you listed but I have some barnyard eggs you could let her sit on.

My chickens have started flying over our 5 ft fence while free ranging. This is the first year that they have tried it and I have to say it is a bit annoying as there is no way to let them free range and keep them on our property now.

I have never seen a buff silkie with green-black tail feathers. He is a strange one for sure! I agree chickens should be with other chickens. They just seem to always want friends. I will have to find that episode on demand cause I watch that show with the two brothers and haven't seen that one!

It's the show with twin brothers where one is a realtor and the other is a contractor. They have had a few different versions of their show - this one was where the realtor shows them new houses to buy and the contractor helps them get their own home ready for sale. It was pretty recently.

I haven't figured out how to change font color from my phone (my only internet access) otherwise I'd post in purple ;P

It won't let me change the color using my Kindle Fire either. Otherwise I'd use green (since you claimed purple!).

Welcome back! You were missed! I'm sorry to hear of your trying time with your broody and hatchlings. Fingers crossed that the drama is over, and a few normal days come your way.

Yes, I totally hear you...I SWORE I wasn't having chickens in the house again, but somehow, it happened. But AGAIN--I'm vowing that poultry will stay outside.

Thanks for the welcome back! I tried two different set ups for the chicks today, first one was a fail as the older chick hopped right out to tell me he thought it would work just fine. lol tear it down and start all over again. I think I have it, but they can't see each other so its not ideal yet. Hoping soon they can all go outside and stay outside soon. Yep I'll join you in the vow to keep all poultry outside!!!

My fingers are crossed that the chick/broody drama is over too! I have enough pre-wedding drama atm. My daughter is getting married on Oct 18, her bridal shower is Sunday, all invites are out. And we have to change the venue. UGH also her MOH is not doing her job, so it looks like all decoration/food is going to fall into my lap. Is it bad to just want this done and over with?

I have no problem with the cats as long as they are fixed and utd on shots. That way my indoor cats are protected, as are they. They keep the small rodents under control. I trapped a mama and 3 kittens about 1 month old back in June. Had to get some weight on them so they could get fixed. And since there are 4 of them, I have my own colony! Which is great as there is a program called Meow Mission I am working with to get them fixed and shots at a discount price. I am also eligible for 2 bags of cat/kitten food a month since I allowed them to live on my property. I will put up housing for them in the winter, hopefully they will stick around. Can always use a good mouser or 4!

Our greenhouse roof had sprung leaks around the skylights. This had been our rabbit barn before we moved. We're thinking the moving process broke the seal around the skylights. The roof decking in those areas had rotted away, so this weekend DH replaced it. Tar paper is down, but still needing shingles yet. Hopefully it isn't leaking now because we finally got some rain. (We've been in a bit of droughtlike conditions here. Last week just a few miles north/east of us rain cells went through & they got 3 inches -- not a drop here!) I'm hoping we get a good rain today.


This is our new windmill. We got it in June to aerate the pond. If you look just left of the center of the water you can see where it bubbles & the wave rings coming from it. There is a baffle in the top of the windmill that pumps air through a hose. You can see the black hose towards the bottom right of the base of the windmill. The rest of the hose is buried in a trench that leads out to the pond and goes out to about the middle of the deep end. There's a round disc connected to the end of it through which the air then bubbles out. Of course it doesn't do anything on windstill days, but most days it's spinning & you can see the bubbles. You can also tell how dry it's been here by the edge of the pond -- our water is down about 1 foot now from where it usually is.



For some reasons my garden pics are a bit blurry, but that's OK -- it disguises all the weeds!! We had all the weeds cleared out, and then fair came. I can tell the plants have suffered from lack of rain and cooler temps -- a lot of stuff is smaller than it should be and just behind schedule.




I promised someone a long time ago (my apologies!) that I would get pics of our orchard. We planted this spring 2012 and the trees were just whips (average 4 ft. long "sticks"). They've all grown quite nicely (and yes, they all survived the summer drought of 2012). There's a mix of about 30 different fruit trees.

So jealous! love your orchard and that garden it just beautiful! I'm not going to show DH your pond, hes been wanting one for years. I keep telling him to start digging. We have a very high water table here, 7' or so, and he hasn't started digging so....lol

Sad news. I lost a duckling this morning. I'm not sure what happened, but one of the wild ducklings I got was just in the coop looking like it was asleep on a nest of 8 eggs. One idea might be that the original broody duck went broody again and killed it but why would she leave it on her nest and go sit on other eggs.
End oft he day I still have 4 wild ducklings that are looking like they might all be the same gender. No curling tail but a nice wide stripe of purple blue on each wing. They are all the same color pattern right now though.

So sorry to hear about your duckling, its never easy

I tried to move my broody away from the flock but she freaked out. I gave her one of the nest boxes and put a mesh cover over her so no one can get in or bother her but she can still see everyone. Admittedly she probably had more eggs under her than was comfortable so I guess for now I'll just watch her. I think @CCCCCCCCHICKENS suggested moving them to an incubator but I didn't have a whole lot of luck with my hatching rate this spring so I think I'll just see how my bird does.

Yea it hurts to lose any chicks. I'm just glad I could save those that I did. All broody's will be broke. I'm not looking to add anymore to my flock. It appears as though I have 2 separate flocks now anyway. How to tell DH I need a new coup for the outsiders?!?!?

Hopefully your mama will man up and be a good mama for you. How many eggs does she have left? Sending good broody vibes your way!!!
