I like your brown type color! I always know who's posting crselvey usually uses a different color too. Usually I read half a post and have to scroll back to see who it was posting! I haven't figured out how to change font color from my phone (my only internet access) otherwise I'd post in purple ;P

Gotcha. I tried to pick a less vibrant red in my last post, but it's hard to get a nice red color that isn't hard to look at on a computer screen! Oh, well. (P.S., that blue isn't so bad! The cyan, though--oi! )

I have a couple of forms if synesthesia. I have touch synesthesia where if I see someone or an animal get hurt or pictures even I feel pain in the area of the injury. I see people in colors. Its genetic. My mom has a couple of forms of it also. I thought everine had physical empathy until my dh told me i was weird. Lol. Needless to say, I dont kill things and I have difficulty with shows about medical stuff and americas funniest home videos and ridiculousness. It literally hurts to watch them.

Although I don't have that type of synesthesia, most everyone on the thread knows that kabhyper and I are the most animal-sensitive, I guess you could say. I've been known to say that I like animals more than people (in general). TV shows that feature laugh tracks along with people getting hurt are one reason. It's disturbing to think that type of "entertainment" appeals to the masses.
I love nature shows, but sometimes have to leave the room when it's predator time.

Although that would be very helpful in diagnosing an issue, unfortunately it doesnt work that way. Its a visual connection. I have to see the injury to feel the pain. It feels a bit like an electric shock. I've been animal sensitive as long as I can remember though.Children and animals. They are innocent and helpless. I guess that's why I feel protective of them. Plus the synesthesia makes me hyper empathetic in general. Its kind of a pain sometimes. Both figuratively and literally.

That's really interesting. I get an unpleasant tingling in my toes and feel dizzy when I see an animal being hurt, and sometimes even if I just think about it. It's not specific to the part of the animal's body being hurt -- I always feel it in my feet plus the dizziness. But I don't have the same response to people getting hurt (I'm unhappy and outraged about it, but don't have the same physical reaction). But the people thing might have to do with my training in anatomy and forensics (you gotta get over those feelings if you're going to work with dead people).

I do have a physical and scent reaction to sounds though -- but I smell the same scent each time (kind of a mix of chocolate and cinnamon, maybe some floral notes too), and it is in response to beautiful chords (doesn't matter what combination of instruments, can also be human voices). At the same time as the smell I get a sort of relaxing physical joy (can't really describe it, except to say that it makes me smile). And the sound 'feels' blue to me. So I guess I also have a color thing going on there. But again, it's the same response to a variety of sounds (and it's not the same chord each time, it is just a category of chords that my mind decides are beautiful). I play the piano, but it doesn't happen when I'm producing the music myself, only if I'm listening to music produced by other people. I also feel a little physically ill (nauseous) when I hear chords that are out of tune. It makes going to high school band night pretty unpleasant. Note that I do NOT have perfect pitch, just 'quite good' pitch. This is the first time I've mentioned this in detail to anybody. This chicken thing is really opening new doors for me.....

I just went t bed totally exhausted at 1 am. Here it is 336 and I'm wide awake. What's with that???? I woke up with a feeling that something has happened somewhere, not a good something! I told Hoosier ,earlier before I went t bed, that I lost two friends yesterday, one because of medical issues and one in a car accident, and now I wake up feeling like something is wrong. I hope you all are ok and wake refreshed and healthy! If you are the praying type...say a prayer for our little community please. In th last 7 days there have bn 7 deaths, in a town of just under 800 people. Wishi could get over this feeling of dread! It won't go away!!! Sorry I know I sound depressing so I'll get off of here just didn't know where else t turn at this time in th morning. My family would flip out if I called all of them at this time in th morning just t ask if they were ok. (They might b but I would have all of them coming after me with whatever weapon was at their disposal). Going t take a pill n try t go back t sleep. Talk T ya all later.

Got the camera recharged so I decided to use it! This is Chloe's little banty coop. We had gotten the tractor coop itself from some friends who sold it to us with our first 2 chickens. It had a small run with it that was falling apart, so DH built a new, bigger run for it.






Her 2 porcelains are both roos. The other 4 we believe are all pullets. They're about 4 months old now.





It's confirmed now that this is a roo! I had posted awhile back pics of him, not sure if it was roo/pullet. He's one of the barnyard crosses. I'm trying to remember, but I think we decided it was the orpington roo (only option) crossed with a silver laced wyandotte.


And had to get a picture of Max. He was sitting so nicely while I was getting pics of the banties. His sister, Olive, is another story. She was busy sniffing out critter holes in the pasture and had no interest in what we were doing!

Our greenhouse roof had sprung leaks around the skylights. This had been our rabbit barn before we moved. We're thinking the moving process broke the seal around the skylights. The roof decking in those areas had rotted away, so this weekend DH replaced it. Tar paper is down, but still needing shingles yet. Hopefully it isn't leaking now because we finally got some rain. (We've been in a bit of droughtlike conditions here. Last week just a few miles north/east of us rain cells went through & they got 3 inches -- not a drop here!) I'm hoping we get a good rain today.


This is our new windmill. We got it in June to aerate the pond. If you look just left of the center of the water you can see where it bubbles & the wave rings coming from it. There is a baffle in the top of the windmill that pumps air through a hose. You can see the black hose towards the bottom right of the base of the windmill. The rest of the hose is buried in a trench that leads out to the pond and goes out to about the middle of the deep end. There's a round disc connected to the end of it through which the air then bubbles out. Of course it doesn't do anything on windstill days, but most days it's spinning & you can see the bubbles. You can also tell how dry it's been here by the edge of the pond -- our water is down about 1 foot now from where it usually is.



For some reasons my garden pics are a bit blurry, but that's OK -- it disguises all the weeds!! We had all the weeds cleared out, and then fair came. I can tell the plants have suffered from lack of rain and cooler temps -- a lot of stuff is smaller than it should be and just behind schedule.




I promised someone a long time ago (my apologies!) that I would get pics of our orchard. We planted this spring 2012 and the trees were just whips (average 4 ft. long "sticks"). They've all grown quite nicely (and yes, they all survived the summer drought of 2012). There's a mix of about 30 different fruit trees.

DH wants a working windmill for water. I can see a lot of what you shared!

Sad news. I lost a duckling this morning. I'm not sure what happened, but one of the wild ducklings I got was just in the coop looking like it was asleep on a nest of 8 eggs. One idea might be that the original broody duck went broody again and killed it but why would she leave it on her nest and go sit on other eggs.
End oft he day I still have 4 wild ducklings that are looking like they might all be the same gender. No curling tail but a nice wide stripe of purple blue on each wing. They are all the same color pattern right now though.

Oh am so sorry to hear. If they are a mallard or black american.. its hard to tell till they are almost matured. I don't know that the breed gets a drake feather either, scoviies don't. Any you don't want holler I plan to reduce our ducks a lot again saturday. The pekin will go into my chicken coop and steal eggs also. They are very well fed, do not understand it at all.

Need Hatching Eggs Pronto Please!
Tomorrow, my son is going to an engineering conference in Danville. I know we have a member from Danville and many nearby members, too. He could purchase a few hatching eggs for Bonbon late tomorrow afternoon. I'm looking for 2-3 Silkie eggs and/or frizzle bantam breed. Meanwhile Bonbon is sitting on an empty nest! Don't let Bonbon waste away on an empty nest!

I only have mutt eggs now, all my babies are in community coops

My niece who lives in Minneapolis took my nephew’s sons to the Minnesota Zoo, which even features an educational area about chickens! I was so excited that I had to check out their website (haven’t been there in years), and I found these interesting facts:

Smart Chickens
Studies prove that if you show a chicken an object, and then hide it, the chicken realizes that the object still exists—something human toddlers aren’t always able to understand.

Chicken Sweets
Unlike people, chickens can’t have a “sweet tooth.” While they can taste salt, they can’t tell which foods are sweet. Besides, chickens have no teeth!

3rd week photos are done! If you compare to the photos in my previous post, you may notice 2 who look totally different. Molly is turning buff and a silkie expert on the Silkie thread says she thinks she'll be porcelain. Also Martha is turning grey partridge, she started out as a yellow chick. These were all taken outside this time so you can really see the colors. Vera, the guinea, was actually really good for me and I got so many good pics from her. She is so wild but I am hoping raising her with silkies and handling her daily will calm her down.



We also built a new coop for the chicks on Saturday. Took 12 hours (with 2 runs to the hardware store) and about $200 (the coop is a dog house from RK). The run is 3'x'3'x6'. I am working on a blog post to show how to build since it is so cheap and easy/quick to put together. Will post that here once it's done. The first coop we built is about a year old, same style and has kept all the predators out so far. I've even seen some cats even sleep on top of it to stay warm in winter. We've got sand in the run for the older coop, just not sure where we're going to put this in the yard so we didn't add it in yet.



I've been eyeing this porch swing-style bird feeder for months, since it was end of season Lowe's had it on closeout and I couldn't resist. (I've also seen it at TSC) There's room for feed in the bottom of the swing. Rita the MF flew on it once, but by the time I got my camera out and on, she flew back to the coop. The chicks are slowly getting more comfortable coming out of the coop, but enjoying all the room in the coop compared to the brooder.



The adult chickens don't seem to pay any attention to the chicks or their new coop. They were outside free ranging all day while we built the second coop. Here's our rooster Top Knot. He's got his hands full with 6 silkie hens, 2 pullets (hoping anyways!) and 4 MF pullets. But he still manages to find time to come and pose for me while I take photographs around the yard. LOL
