INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@chicks47720

PM me, please, and let me know what you're looking for.

The thing I've had the most luck with for healing is peppermint essential oil.  I get a q-tip and dip it into the oil and apply w/the q-tip.  Then turn it over and dip with the other end.  Use a new q-tip each time so as not to contaminate the bottle.  Or you could use cotton balls but then you have to get a new one each time you need more of the oil on it.  Put it on whenever it is itching.

Of course washing well with either Fels Naptha or Dawn first.

When they are walking on hocks it is likely thiamin deficiency.  Could also be niacin.  Are you feeding medicated chick starter?  It contains a thiamin blocker which can be deadly for some chicks.  As soon as you see them on the hocks, vitamins or tiny chopped liver needs to be fed immediately.  Brewers yeast can also suffice if that's all you have around.

Since I'm behind I'm not sure if your remaining chick is still okay... if so...  remove any medicated feed ASAP and begin with vitamins right  away to prevent.

Strangely I sing too, but depending on the tone, some of them will shake their heads and are in distress!  I've heard of other's birds shaking their heads like the tone hurts their ears too!

I know they need vitamins, but there is nothing I can do if I don't have them on me. I know that is not why they died because they weren't doing it too bad. I absolutely do NOT feed medicated feed. That stuff so much downsides to it, it isn even funny. People see the word medicated and assume it is better.

I also just realized that auto correct changed hocks to hawks

ETA: I got my vitamins out of my dads trunk this morning

I know we have discussed it before but...
What are the ins and outs and the costs to having an NPIP flock. Can the same goals be accomplished by having a closed flock?

C...Chickens I see you are a tester. Why test or what kind of situation would cause you to recommend getting the testing done?

I will try and give a few good points.

-it can open up your potential buyers a lot. More people will be apt to buy from you knowing you have a clean flock.

-it give you piece of mind

-I would recommend anyone and everyone to get their flock tested so that you know you have a clean flock. You shouldn't just do it because you have a sick bird

- also if you are Ito shipping eggs an birds some states like VA mandate that you be certified to ship anything in

-a lot of shows require proof that your birds you are showing be tested.

- and there is no telling what costs is. It is whatever the tester wants to charge

Am I the only one that doesn't have a clue what this is? Lol

I'll be selling some CCL pullets next year if hatching goes well. I think Racin and BradS might have a few now, if sooner is better. And there is also a good breeder in Southern IN if you are wanting to mix lines.

My comment made more sense in my head than in the post.

What I meant to say is, I'm putting them on my unfulfillable wishlist. There are a lot of breeds I'd love to add, but my flock is at maximum capacity right now.

What really stinks about it is my coop is huge, and I could easily house four more hens, if my run was bigger. Some day I'll expand the run, but it's going to be a tough sell with the wife.
