INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Greetings again, Hoosiers!

Just taking some time here to stop in and catch up on the thread, there's a lot here since the last time I checked in.

Currently, here in Paragon, er're raising the following poultry:

Buckeyes
Black Australorps
Self-Blue Orpingtons
BBS LF Cochins
Gold Laced/Silver Laced/Buff Laced LF Polish
Millie Fleur and Porcelain d'Uccles
Black Silkies
Black/Slate/SB Turkeys

As always, looking for local sources of chicks/started/adult birds of the following:
BBS Orpingtons
Chocolate Orpingtons
BBS Australorps
BBS Jersey GIants
Tolbunt Polish
White Crested BBS LF Polish
Lavendar LF Cochins
SC or RC RIR (True)
Barred Rock (Prefereably Good Sheppard)
All Varieties Wyandottes
Crested Cream Legbars
BBS, Buff, Self-Blue Silkies

Geeze, one would think I was starting and running a hatchery, but I just really enjoy my birds. It's some the girlfriend and I enjoy together, so we're going big.

I'm in the process here of building 11 breeding pens separate of the main coop. Previously we had two smaller breeding pens to use at a time, but they've been overtaken by little ones and converted to grow out pens. The pens are being built with raised coops made from disassembled pallets. I think the measurements on the pens are 17x77 overall, divided into 17x7 pens by use of easily removable dividers. Plans are to be able to expand individual pens depending on how many birds I want breeding in the pen at the time.

Don't worry, I'm taking plenty of pictures as I go!

On top of all that, working 6 days a week, and remodeling the house... I need more hours per day!!!

Hope you all are taking care and enjoying life.

Matthew

P.S. I'm looking for a local NPIP tester!!!
Hi, Glad you checked in.

I live just up the road in Mooresville. I have BBS Jersey Giants and CCLs. I am looking to cut back on my flock, so I have some available. I also have a nice big heritage RIR roo that either needs to go or go in the pot.

@racinchickins - yes the bird I was asking about is one I hatched from you.

@Leahs Mom - if you're looking for a specific cattle breed I would suggest googling the breed for their breed organization. They usually have a list of breeders and where they are located.
Did you also get some Bresse eggs too? That looks like a wyandotte mix, and I could have possibly mixed up one of those eggs with the Bresse. If it came from a blue egg, then I'm clueless how that happened. I didn't even have any black roos at the time. Did any others hatch? I'd hate to think you didn't get anything worthwhile from me. Let me know, I'm willing to make it up to you.

Quote: No hawks here since early spring. But I had a heron do a low flyby this weekend, and you should have heard the alarm calls from all my birds....

I'll PM you :) I couldn't remember what else you had, I did take 3 barnyard mix eggs. I could see him being part Wyandotte. This guy has feathered legs too.

That tree is a good thing in the run. It provides shade for your birds which is important!

Can you send a link showing the difference between the bird netting and the deer netting?
Sorry my quick trip out to take pic's ended up rescuing my girls from a egg eating black snake.
so her are the pic's.

the bird netting

this is the deer netting. The bird net was 3.2m and the deer net is 2.1m hole sz. and much stronger than the bird IMO.

The starlings will come through the sides too - trust me. My whole run was chain link and they were still getting in. I reinforced with chicken wire on the inside of all of the chainlink and the sparrows were still getting in. I reinforced again with deer netting, fewer sparrows but they were still coming in somehow. I finally got clear car mats (less than $2 at walmart), cut them into strips and hung them over the pop doors to keep the wild birds out of the feed (I feed inside). My chickens still aren't thrilled with having to go through them, but I have yet to have a bird make it inside for a snack.
I actually remember you saying that so I hung the net from the ground up on all 4 sides and the top. Let them try it now... lol

does anyone know how to keep black snakes out of a coop, don't know how he is getting in and I cant catch him he see's me come in the door and off he goes behind the nest boxes. I have looked for holes, found none.
My girls wouldn't go to bed tonight so I have them in the barn... ya know how time consuming it is to catch 57 birds and place them in differant places in a barn???? Bout an hour.... I got to get rid of this snake!!

So did anyone else's chores seem overly warm tonight?
I have been working outside all day, cleaned all my houses and runs, made a brooder for my broody hen after the snake chased her off her first box. Moved 2 ISA browns to the big coop well barn for now it seems. Cleaned all the feed and water dishes, not just wipe and rinse... a good cleaning. So yea by the time I was ready to come in the house had to take a bath and change clothes cause the AC was freezing me... lol went out just now to see if I could catch me.snake ( didn't ) and noticed it was cooler already.

Sending good hatching vibes your way. My broody is on day 18 tomorrow! Biting my nails!
I'm in the "waiting on a broody" club too. but my girl had to start over today cause the dang black snake chased her off her eggs ant ate 2 of them and by the time I found out something was wrong the rest were cold, She was on day 10 too. Sucks. Would Sept. 7th be too late in the season for her to hatch chicks???? She wants them so bad. I have moved her 3 times today. 1 to get her out of the snakes hunting ground nest box too sm. 2 5 gal bucket nest... too sm. 3 just a lg cardboard box and it is just right... She is happy and she has room to turn around so she can look out. Good luck you the 2 of you hope you have a 100% hatch rate.
