You probably don't want to hear about mine in Northern IN...

If you wouldn't mind listing out the names of feed stores, I'd like to start adding all the feed store locations to the Indiana BYC'ers Map. I bookmarked the spreadsheet that was mentioned, if anyone else has stores to add to the list, please let me know!

Has anyone been to dinky's auction lately? How much is a laying pullet selling for there?

I might go this Friday and will let you know. Earlier in the year, prices were on the high side.

Journey to Zen
I found my Zen after DD Lauren brought home chicks 2.5 years ago, and I began spending time outdoors with them. I always loved being outside as a child, and as I grew up, but after having kids of my own, I often spent spare time taking care of indoor needs. Chickens reconnected me with nature. I'm outside with them probably 360 days of the year--- just missing a few. Even if the weather is bad, I will at least go out for an hour or two. It's an addiction; I have to have my "outdoor chicken fix." The minute I step outside to spend time with them, I feel happy and relaxed. On the plus side, my health has improved according to my vital signs, labs, etc. On the minus side, my osteoarthritis has worsened. I like to do yard work with my flock for hours (six hours today--I'm used to all kinds of weather), but I should take it easier. You'd think I'd be a tiny little thing with all the exercise I do, but I guess I just work up an appetite!

My Testimonial
I've taken many Theravada Buddhism meditation classes over the years, but have found that chickens to be more effective in facilitating my Zen.

My Recovery
I probably need to go to Chicken Rehab to reduce my dependency. What is it about chickens that makes people crazy?

This is actually just a prefab shed that I purchased on Amazon. We have made many modifications to it including windows, shelving, perches, nesting boxes, ladder, pet doors, food hangers and attached runs on the exterior. It took a really long time as I started it last fall and the crazy winter prevented any work on it. I have found that I will have to lower the two higher nesting boxes but all the girls prefer the higher roosting pole, imagine that. Birds are silly.

Well your work paid off. What are the dimensions of your shed? Do you have a link to it?

In terms of the little coops they sell at rural king, I can house about 10 chickens in this lol. I will probably put a quad in each coop. Each little coop is also attached to a 10ft by 5 ft run

My new cochin pair didn't like getting their picture either. Especially Alice the girl. She would hide behind her man Jasper every time.

This is the only cochin bantam I have that doesn't like her picture taken. And I don't know if she really doesn't like it but shee moves around entirely too much to ever get a good one

i thought i would post some photos of my girls new coop


i made the stairs so it can be raised and out of the way when cleaning bedding

i love the shelves in the coop as i can store more chicken stuff in there and not inside my house


oyster shell in the food hanger and their dust bath


i added windows to allow in more natural light


i also added in pet doors for their entrances. i like them as they come with a slider so when i want to block off a run just slip it on

all doors lead to a fenced in run so no worries about predators

Oh my gosh!! I absolutely love this!! My DH and I are getting ready to convert a shed into a coop for all the girls and boys for the winter and I think I might use some of these Ideas!!! I love the inside hanging feeders. What kind of watering system did you use? (if you don't mind me being nosy) I was also thinking of making a little side closet for supplies, kinda like your shelves, to keep everything right where I need it. My shed/coop will be also opened to my 55' x 70'fenced in garden so the girls will have plenty of room and work to do over the colder months. Thanks for sharing your pics.

The original purchase price on the shed was $989 plus tax. I have probably put an additional $400 approximately into the materials to make the interior of the shed what I wanted for my girls. the roosting poles are closet rods. Heaven knows what I spent on the wood and fencing and hardware for the runs. This is the name of the shed I started from : Lifetime 6405 8-by-10-Foot Outdoor Storage Shed with Window, Skylights, and Shelving. The windows in my pictures are actually basement windows we purchased at the hardware and put in after. The ones it comes with are junk. The recommendation for this shed is that it sit on a solid foundation so we built a framework and filled it with gravel.

For the summer I am using individual 3 gallon water dispensers just like the food ones in the picture except designed for water. For the winter I have a heater base that I will run a cord out there with a galvanized waterer. It's not our ideal solution but it is working for now
