Nice thing about German numbers is that it's pretty easy to figure out most of them once you know 1-10. So, for example, two is zwei and four is vier, and all the 'tens' have -zig on the end (except thirty, for some reason, but that's beside the point), so forty-two is zweiundvierzig - literally 'two and forty'. And that just happens to be my chicken count. Ich habe zweiundvierzig Hühner. (I think that's how it goes... I'm still figuring it out.)

Yes. I actually know someone from Germany so hear t from time to time. I also could have had a lot of help learning it if I would have taken it, but it wouldn't work out.

Hi everyone. Just wanting to check in. I lost a bird today, noob mistake. I started getting the coup winter ready. I took down the chicken wire under the roost boards as there were no mamas/ babies using it, and I moved the nest boxes under that space. Well no hens were laying in it. They were all just making nests in the deep litter in the corners. I moved a board to block off the corners to leave them really no options but the boxes, and one hen got back behind the wood, then couldn't get out, looks like she got her head wedged and broke her neck. Needless to say, all corners are now open. I just feel sick about it. I got 4 eggs today, so I know my hens are upset about it too. A couple of them just came to sit on me and rest their head under my arm. Even the feral kittens followed me around all night and got within a couple of feet away from me, I could have reached out and touched them tonight. Feeling pretty bummed all night.

I'm sorry to hear of the other deaths, chickens and ducks. I am very glad to hear others are healing well. Sending good hatching vibes to all those eggs!

Hello Indiana people, Im in Northern In...Goshen/Elkahrt area.

Im looking for a couple birds heading into fall/winter.

Im looking for a couple EE/ameracanas or Olive eggers. I have 3 that I have had for 1 year but I dont know their actual age.They have stopped laying since Late July. I dont know why...still healthy and perhaps going through a little molt but dont look bad at all. Strange.

I would also like some ISBAR as well. Forgot to mention. - edit

Anyway, Im looking for some color in my egg basket and if you have any EE that are around or less than a year, I would be interested.

What mill is it in Sheridan?

Defiantly check out Timmons in Lebanon. Their minimum order to mix is 250lbs. Either way get yourself a couple of these for feed storage!

I keep my cattle feed in these in the barn and have only had mice in them when I've accidentally left the lid off

One will hold 300 lbs of cattle feed, I could probably get more chicken feed in one if it's ground or crumbles.

Got quite a bit done to the yard today. I let it go for so long I looked like a hillbilly! Such a relief getting it done lol.

I also was able to get a 4ft wide by 4ft deep by 8ft tall wooden shipping crate from work! I'm going to turn it on its side and put in dividers for the modern games breeding pens. I'll make each pen 2x4 by 4ft tall and then all them access to a run. Not sure of run soze yet but probably 6 ft long and they will have access under the pens so a total of 10 ft. Regardless I got the main frame for nothing. They also had a 8ft long by 8ft wide by 4 ft deep shipping crate that I passed on simply due to having to haul the trailer and gas money just wasn't worth it.

I also snapped some pictures of my black/blue silkie/showgirl pen. They have really turned out beautiful. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.

Hey, all, thought I'd check in and let y'all know what's going on in my neck of the woods. School started for me on Monday and it's been nothing short of crappy since then.

Mainly, I wanted to reply to anyone wondering about my little ducky, Wibbles. It's with a heavy heart that I must report she passed away while I was at class yesterday. She had become increasingly weak over the week and I... really wasn't surprised to find that she had given up the fight. She was not well by yesterday.

She was such a precious baby, and I miss her so much. She gave me so many smiles in her short life, popping out from under the EcoGlow to look up at me, falling asleep with her little wing in my hand, nibbling at my fingers, splashing in her little tub... She was only 12 days old, but it felt like I had known her for so much longer.




Other than that (and school stress), all is well with me and my birds. The girls always help me through my worst times. As far as my future with waterfowl, we're planning on building a duck coop this fall and looking for a pair or trio of Calls for sale at the Lebanon show in October. (Anyone else going? I know that's a ways away, but I'm just wondering.) I don't think I'll try shipped eggs again (since that went so well last time). Maybe a more hardy breed if I do try hatching again.

Anyway, I have a four day weekend now, so I'll probably be more active the next few days. I'm not gonna bother to go back and reread everything, so sorry if I missed anything directed at me.

At the auction in Topeka a guy usually brings barrels that were used for storing sugar. They go cheap enough and are clean with nice lids that lock down.

Im in process of preparing paperwork and will ask our town board ( or town bored) to revise the ban on chickens in October. My coop set ups is probably pretty "redneck", and I really don't care. I repurpose anything I can to build a coop for little of no cost. I use fiberglass or aluminum truck caps to provide shade, hiding places and shelter for my birds. and housing for the ducks in the winter. Warm, waterproof and very easy to move for cleanup. I have one truck cap I pinpoint for dustbathing in a dry area of the property. I add clean fireplace ash, construction sand and it helps them stay mite free naturally. Many people give truck caps away. My goose coop is a large aluminum snowmobile trailer top. It has an access door in the front to pull eggs. We cut a door in the low side they are able to enter at, and rolled the edges so my geese would not be cut on the metal. I use these caps because they are easy to move with the tractor, and I can scrape and compost the waste. I repurpose sheds folks no longer want for chicken, turkey, etc coops. I use tarps for shade if the trees don't provide enough. They are cheap and easy to replace.
And we have my Dad's 80 years of "stuff" he won't part with, and my DH is always swapping, selling, trading and loves his 4X4s

So get the banjo's out now, y'all! I would love to have a large attractive coop, but my birds don't really care what it looks like as long as they are well fed, safe and healthy. I do make a point of keeping all of it in the mid to back end of the property so its not an unpleasant view from the road, however. I respect my few neighbors enough to not lower their property value.

Ok so I have a question for @bradselig or anyone else who has used a sportsman cabinet incubator.
My husband and I are going to be making a homemade cabinet bator a lot like the sportsman and my question is, do you use something else for hatching? We have several of the Styrofoam incubators, we could use for hatching, because I didn't know if there was a place in the cabinet kind, like the bottom level or something. Thanks

It depends on what I hatch. Quail, I use the sportsman hatch tray. Those lil buggers hatch no matter what, lol. The rest of my birds, I built a cooler incubator and use it so the eggs in my sportsman are not having humidity spikes every week. If you have a still air styrofoam incubator they are perfect.

So I candled my JG's eggs today.... guess I don't know what I'm looking at cause I really couldn't tell ya anything. 2 Just looked like yoke in side, 4 were just as black as could be and 2 I couldn't see anything at all. Going to see I I can find the post with all the pic's you guys were posting this winter and see if anything looks like what I have. I'm not as thrilled as I thought I would be. oh well.

Hello everyone! I haven't posted in awhile, but I wanted to give an update on my rooster who was attacked by a weasel back in June and received a punctured eye and two head wounds. I bring good news about him!

Against all odds, the guy made it through

. In June we did find him a vet and they gave us antibiotics for his eye and painkillers, but the visits were getting expensive and in July, we had to stop taking him. Things didn't look bright in July for him. He started to lose weight fast, stopped drinking again, and I couldn't give him antibiotic since it was becoming a hassle to secure him and not hurt him more

Then things started to turn for the good. I noticed one day, little worms in his poop and immediately did some research on parasitic chicken worms. Came to the conclusion, that he had contracted roundworms someday before the attack. I got him some Wazine 17 to treat it. I also noticed that his feathers were a little fluffed up. I figured that meant he was cold and was trying to retain body so I put a heat lamp over him. Within an hour of that, he started to drink again, but I was still worried about his eye since I wasn't giving him the antibiotic.
Fast forward to about the first to second week of August...
We decided we would take him to the vet at least one more time since he improved so much. The vet was surprised of his comeback and said that all that needed to be done for him was to clean his eye a bit everyday and that he didn't have worms anymore

I wanted to get a good picture of him, but I'm not the best photographer and he moves a lot

Today, he's still in the house until we build something just for him and his wounds have healed up nicely, but won't be able to see out of his that was punctured again, but I'm just glad he's still alive

great news Darth - our Roo is improving too from the july 9th dog attack - he hops around on one leg - the bad leg will prob never work again. had some pretty bad puncture wounds, but skin is healing. wormed him 3 days ago
