Haha Just teasing! She was an especially sweet chicken. I'm glad she is going well.

Bumblefoot
@Minminme Thanks for the info on bumblefoot I appreciate you taking the time to tell about your experience.

I have a veterinarian appointment tomorrow at 4:00 and will ask his thoughts. It sounds like Prep H would be much easier on my Jubilee, Adeline, but I guess it depends on the severity. The vet is the one that I especially like for my chickens since he has chickens, and he also runs a wild bird rehab. I stopped by there today and bought some expensive pain medicine. It's weird because Adeline's foot doesn't look that bad, but has the scab. She has been limping worse, acting like it hurts (because of the way she limps and because she slept in a nesting box last night). Tonight, she got back in the box, so DH and I set up the dog kennel hospital on the inside of the back sliding glass doors and brought her in. Broody Bonbon is housed right outside the doors. Crazy Chicken Household! I put soft towels in the kennel with paper towels on top for easy clean up. She was yacking as usual-- she's normally loud verbal. I gave her the dose of pain meds, and a little bit later, she was snoozing! My main concern was her pain. I've read that chickens don't show pain because they don't want to appear weak. So even if it appears that they did well during home surgery, they were likely in much pain. I'm guessing that it depends on the individual situation, though. Anyway, I'll keep everyone posted about my experience dealing with bumblefoot.

@browncow15 Your new chicks are so sweet! My Bonbon is sitting on eggs from ellymayRans. Are yours Bantam Cochins? I hope she did give you all the pullet eggs!

Sunflowers!
I love sunflowers, but when I've tried to grow them, some creatures eat them up (and they weren't chickens). Maybe deer? Do you put fencing around your plants?

@CCCCCCCCHICKENS Loved your photos. Your chickens are beautiful!
@hanakimi Wow! Your new coop looks wonderful. Those nesting boxes look cool, too. What brand are they? I like the attached perches.
MnMPoultry ~ Jubey sounds lovely compared to your Dickensian chicken names!
wink.png

the nesting boxes are the ones they sell at TSC. i got them as it's plastic and i can unscrew them and give it a wash when it is needed

For those of you who ship, what is the minimum number of day-olds you are comfortable putting a standard 25 chick box? Has anyone found a smaller approved box? Just thinking ahead for spring.

Also looking for incubator recommendations in the 40 to 50 egg range with an auto turner option. Anyone use a Hovabator 1588 with turner? Love my Brinsea but no way can I afford their 40 egg unit.

Thanks!

10. I got 10 chicks shipped all the way from texas

Ok so I have a question for @bradselig
or anyone else who has used a sportsman cabinet incubator.
My husband and I are going to be making a homemade cabinet bator a lot like the sportsman and my question is, do you use something else for hatching? We have several of the Styrofoam incubators, we could use for hatching, because I didn't know if there was a place in the cabinet kind, like the bottom level or something. Thanks
I had a homemade incubator and hatched in a still air styrofoam incubator. Much easier to keep clean.

M2H what did th vet say/do for the bumble foot? Oh and yes she is a very Sweet girl! BY THE WAY named her Pickles. She ate the pickles off my McDs hamburg on th way home from Chickenfest, was so protective of them I nearly had a chicken riot in my backseat! Lol

Sunday, September 7-Tri-K Pigeon & Bantam Club-Kankakee, IL
Sunday, September 7-Croy Creek Trader's Fair-Reelsville, Indiana
Sunday, September 14-Golden Horseshoe Saddle Club-Knox Swap Meet
I'm going if its not raining. will have my shirt on.
Also if you are interested the opposite weekend of Cory Creek is Sandcut, In. It's the same as Cory Creek runs till Oct. ( I think will check on that ) its just a bit smaller then Cory Creek.
And Rockville has an auction every Saturday all year long, always has chickens mostly laying hens but sometimes they have Silkies and Came birds and such. Rockville is also where I get most of my recycle stuff I use for coops, feeders, nest ect... and it seems they always have the 10 hole metal nest boxes up there, I have seen them go for as little as 5.00 and up to 50.00 just depends on who is there I guess.
I also seen someone asked about Veedersburg, ( sorry if I missed the reply ) they do have a day for chickens, the next one is Sept. 26, 2014
They have 2 phone numbers listed on our flyer too, 765-376-5144 Todd and 765-294-0300 Barn

i thought i would post some photos of my girls new coop:)

i made the stairs so it can be raised and out of the way when cleaning bedding

i love the shelves in the coop as i can store more chicken stuff in there and not inside my house

oyster shell in the food hanger and their dust bath

i added windows to allow in more natural light

i also added in pet doors for their entrances. i like them as they come with a slider so when i want to block off a run just slip it on

all doors lead to a fenced in run so no worries about predators :)
I love it. Great set up, if ya don't mind I'm gonna use your hanger ideal.

This is actually just a prefab shed that I purchased on Amazon. We have made many modifications to it including windows, shelving, perches, nesting boxes, ladder, pet doors, food hangers and attached runs on the exterior. It took a really long time as I started it last fall and the crazy winter prevented any work on it. I have found that I will have to lower the two higher nesting boxes but all the girls prefer the higher roosting pole, imagine that. Birds are silly.
You did an Awesome job, We are getting a 10x9, want to come do ours???

Thanks. I found the website, right after I asked what it was. It has all the price info and everything. The problem is I wanted I go this Sunday and they don't have one this Sunday
This week end is Sandcut, in. Same thing just smaller.

The original purchase price on the shed was $989 plus tax. I have probably put an additional $400 approximately into the materials to make the interior of the shed what I wanted for my girls. the roosting poles are closet rods. Heaven knows what I spent on the wood and fencing and hardware for the runs. This is the name of the shed I started from : Lifetime 6405 8-by-10-Foot Outdoor Storage Shed with Window, Skylights, and Shelving. The windows in my pictures are actually basement windows we purchased at the hardware and put in after. The ones it comes with are junk. The recommendation for this shed is that it sit on a solid foundation so we built a framework and filled it with gravel.
wow

I haven't posted any chicken pics for awhile so I thought I would take a few. I don't remember who was wanting Quail D'Anver's here is my little cockerel and pullet pair!! Not for sale but chicks maybe in the future.

They are very sweet birds easy to handle.
Here is Cricket looking over his laying hens.

This a bad pic but it's our LF Cochin coop (and a few other breeds) if you can pic him out Huckleberry we got from kabhyper1 and he is my boys bird.

Here is Crickets little twin brother from the same hen and roo!

Here is our Muscovy drake Si and his two boys that are growing up to be huge scovys!!

And a couple of our horses Buddy the paint and Starfire they wanted their pics taken also lol

Sorry about the bad pics I'm no Kab when it comes to animal pictures!!
Very pretty birds, oh and horses, love Starfire's butt.... I have a thing for nice round butt's ( on horses ) lol

My little blue partridge silkie pullet is a little fella. I can usually tell sex of my own chicks, but he slipped by me. LOL I would have never known if those sneaky streamers hadn't started peeking out of the back of his head. He is soooo girly looking!

very hansom when it stops raining I have to do check my last ???? Silkie to see if it has any of those????

Ok! So I had some time today to get some good pics of some of my new babies. I have some silkies, seabrights, cochins, frizzles, and some FCM/? mixes. (Dad was the french copper maran and I'm not sure who mom was, they were brown eggs) I am going to have so much fun watching these little bits grow up. I can't wait to see what they will look like. I haven't come up with names yet because I'm not sure if I have boys or girls. I'm thinking one of the black silkies is a boy though because it has much bigger waddles. You guys let me know what you think.
lau.gif

This is the one I am thinking is a boy! I think they are around 12 weeks old.

this one is a very pretty grey color. Do you guys think it will stay grey or maybe turn more lavender as it gets older?

what color do you think this one will turn out to be?

You can't tell it very well in this pic, but this is one of the frizzles. It's feathers are all turned up on the ends.
celebrate.gif

This is one of the ones that I hatched from my FCM/? cross

Another one of my hatchlings. I think it was from my easter egger because it has puffy cheeks.

This last one is one of my favorites, it's also a frizzle.

Ok, that's all for now. Is it crazy of me to be so excited to see these guys grow up. They are so cute and I just know they are going to be beautiful birds. I just can't help it I LOVE my chicky babies!!!!
love.gif
I will probably have to part with some sooner or later though, or we will be over run by chickens!!!!
wee.gif
Very cute I miss my Seabright...

Here's our d'Uccle crew... The hen in the pic with the rooster is also one of the ones in the hen group pic.

You wouldn't be needing a couple of young roo's would ya?

Just asking, got too many MF roo's and not enough hens... aint it the way it always goes...

Got quite a bit done to the yard today. I let it go for so long I looked like a hillbilly! Such a relief getting it done lol.

I also was able to get a 4ft wide by 4ft deep by 8ft tall wooden shipping crate from work! I'm going to turn it on its side and put in dividers for the modern games breeding pens. I'll make each pen 2x4 by 4ft tall and then all them access to a run. Not sure of run soze yet but probably 6 ft long and they will have access under the pens so a total of 10 ft. Regardless I got the main frame for nothing. They also had a 8ft long by 8ft wide by 4 ft deep shipping crate that I passed on simply due to having to haul the trailer and gas money just wasn't worth it.

I also snapped some pictures of my black/blue silkie/showgirl pen. They have really turned out beautiful. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.

I LOVE this girl. She is a frizzled silkie

The others were in the coop sitting on eggs.
nice

Hey, all, thought I'd check in and let y'all know what's going on in my neck of the woods. School started for me on Monday and it's been nothing short of crappy since then.

Mainly, I wanted to reply to anyone wondering about my little ducky, Wibbles. It's with a heavy heart that I must report she passed away while I was at class yesterday. She had become increasingly weak over the week and I... really wasn't surprised to find that she had given up the fight. She was not well by yesterday.
sad.png
She was such a precious baby, and I miss her so much. She gave me so many smiles in her short life, popping out from under the EcoGlow to look up at me, falling asleep with her little wing in my hand, nibbling at my fingers, splashing in her little tub... She was only 12 days old, but it felt like I had known her for so much longer.

Other than that (and school stress), all is well with me and my birds. The girls always help me through my worst times. As far as my future with waterfowl, we're planning on building a duck coop this fall and looking for a pair or trio of Calls for sale at the Lebanon show in October. (Anyone else going? I know that's a ways away, but I'm just wondering.) I don't think I'll try shipped eggs again (since that went so well last time). Maybe a more hardy breed if I do try hatching again.

Anyway, I have a four day weekend now, so I'll probably be more active the next few days. I'm not gonna bother to go back and reread everything, so sorry if I missed anything directed at me.
I am so sorry for you loss, I had hoped he would be fine.

Im in process of preparing paperwork and will ask our town board ( or town bored) to revise the ban on chickens in October. I know ive got one heck of a, fight but ha they are gonna have their handful
Welcome

I haven't put tons of effort into re-homing my two Roos yet. Some--but not resorting to Craigslist free chickens yet.
This weekend we're hosting family BBQ.
I foresee 30 city folk + 8 preteen girls + 2 Roos humping hens=DW suggesting I put more effort into re-homing them.

So I candled my JG's eggs today.... guess I don't know what I'm looking at cause I really couldn't tell ya anything. 2 Just looked like yoke in side, 4 were just as black as could be and 2 I couldn't see anything at all. Going to see I I can find the post with all the pic's you guys were posting this winter and see if anything looks like what I have. I'm not as thrilled as I thought I would be. oh well.

Hello everyone! I haven't posted in awhile, but I wanted to give an update on my rooster who was attacked by a weasel back in June and received a punctured eye and two head wounds. I bring good news about him!

Against all odds, the guy made it through :). In June we did find him a vet and they gave us antibiotics for his eye and painkillers, but the visits were getting expensive and in July, we had to stop taking him. Things didn't look bright in July for him. He started to lose weight fast, stopped drinking again, and I couldn't give him antibiotic since it was becoming a hassle to secure him and not hurt him more :barnie Then things started to turn for the good. I noticed one day, little worms in his poop and immediately did some research on parasitic chicken worms. Came to the conclusion, that he had contracted roundworms someday before the attack. I got him some Wazine 17 to treat it. I also noticed that his feathers were a little fluffed up. I figured that meant he was cold and was trying to retain body so I put a heat lamp over him. Within an hour of that, he started to drink again, but I was still worried about his eye since I wasn't giving him the antibiotic.
Fast forward to about the first to second week of August...
We decided we would take him to the vet at least one more time since he improved so much. The vet was surprised of his comeback and said that all that needed to be done for him was to clean his eye a bit everyday and that he didn't have worms anymore :celebrate
I wanted to get a good picture of him, but I'm not the best photographer and he moves a lot

Today, he's still in the house until we build something just for him and his wounds have healed up nicely, but won't be able to see out of his that was punctured again, but I'm just glad he's still alive :)

Also, if anyone is looking for roosters, I got plenty! PM if you are interested in any and pictures
These guys are free:

Bantam barred rock

These guys are $5 and NPIP
