INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

For those of you who ship, what is the minimum number of day-olds you are comfortable putting a standard 25 chick box? Has anyone found a smaller approved box? Just thinking ahead for spring.

Also looking for incubator recommendations in the 40 to 50 egg range with an auto turner option. Anyone use a Hovabator 1588 with turner? Love my Brinsea but no way can I afford their 40 egg unit.

I had the 1588. It worked great but being stryo it was not the easiest to clean. Also I don't know how you feel about early hatching chick or late hatching chicks. But if you set 40 eggs for a 20 chick order, once you start pulling chicks out it decreases the remaining eggs' chances of hatching. BUT if you don't get those chicks out and in the mail as soon as possible, their chances of making it are not the best either.
Many smaller breeders in the RIR thread have instead opted to use express shipping for chicks. And the minimum number is more based on age. A single teenage rooster can make the journey in express shipping.

Afternoon peeps! Well after some thinking about a game we could play on here, this is what I came up with.... The Name Game or Who's that? To play all you have to do is post a pic or vid of any random thing that come to mind( Ex: Characters from a show, any animals, food stuff, ect). After you post wait for at lease 15 mins before you post again( This will give people a chance to guess what the thing). So what do you guys think? I would like to add that this game should only be played when nobody is saying anything important( Ex: Like late at night, early in the morning or if no one has wrote anything after about an hour or so.)

@Mother2Hens my chicks from ellymayrans are from her marans and americauna. I don't have any bantys here but I was impressed with hers when we were there to visit maybe someday

As far as my sunflowers I just put a string up around where I planted them so DH wouldn't mow over them by accident. Something (probably my escapee chickens) nibbled on the quite a bit when they were small but not enough to bother them apparently. I don't have much wildlife here either though.

I haven't put tons of effort into re-homing my two Roos yet. Some--but not resorting to Craigslist free chickens yet.
This weekend we're hosting family BBQ.
I foresee 30 city folk + 8 preteen girls + 2 Roos humping hens=DW suggesting I put more effort into re-homing them.

Ok so I have a question for @bradselig or anyone else who has used a sportsman cabinet incubator.
My husband and I are going to be making a homemade cabinet bator a lot like the sportsman and my question is, do you use something else for hatching? We have several of the Styrofoam incubators, we could use for hatching, because I didn't know if there was a place in the cabinet kind, like the bottom level or something. Thanks
