INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

DH and I picked up steel siding to use over the "West Virginia" parts of the coop, covered with insulation and Tyvek. A couple of pieces will create shade for the bachelor pads, which currently enhance the WV look of hanging a large tarp. Then I will have to paint them...or maybe I should do that first? Does anyone have steel siding that they painted themselves? Tips greatly appreciated.

In terms of the little coops they sell at rural king, I can house about 10 chickens in this lol. I will probably put a quad in each coop. Each little coop is also attached to a 10ft by 5 ft run

All gorgeous birds! What type roof are you planning? I really like the design.

Could be worse, we have been smelling decaying mouse at work for two days. I reported it yesterday morning and a facilities worker stopped by and said "yep, there is a dead mouse in a trap, I'll send someone to remove it"......then nothing!!!! Mother of the year was out in the yard puttering around without her children this morning. I sprinted to the coop thinking my worst fears had been realized and they had been shoved off the tall roost and died, nope they were just stuck on the roost unsure of how to get down and mother of the year blew them off. I seriously think she is considering cutting the cord completely at 4 weeks old! I would have expected at least a couple more weeks of nurturing! It will be a bit of a relief to have them all in the coop, I was having to feed the babies on the floor in the shed and it was making my mouse problem even worse. Now I can start combating the mice again.

i thought i would post some photos of my girls new coop


i made the stairs so it can be raised and out of the way when cleaning bedding

i love the shelves in the coop as i can store more chicken stuff in there and not inside my house


oyster shell in the food hanger and their dust bath


i added windows to allow in more natural light


i also added in pet doors for their entrances. i like them as they come with a slider so when i want to block off a run just slip it on

all doors lead to a fenced in run so no worries about predators

I love how it looks, nice job! I am sure they enjoy all the room.

M2H do u remember the buff crested polish I got at the Chickenfest? Bless his heart Racin didn't know she had bumble foot...on both feet!. Poor girl. At any rate the reason I was mentioning this is to tell you that the Prep H method of treatment healed both of her feet up beautifully! During treatments she didn't even flinch, not even when I (sorry for this those of you who are squeemish) squeezed the kernel of infection out of one of them. (It was way too large to just ooze out like the first one did). She still as a very small "scab" on top of her left foot but its from the buff ORP chick pecking it the day I left the bandage off. No more bandages and no limping or favoring it at all.

Minminme ~ Yes, I remember the Poor Polish Chicken that @racinchickins pawned off on you!

Haha Just teasing! She was an especially sweet chicken. I'm glad she is going well.

@Minminme Thanks for the info on bumblefoot I appreciate you taking the time to tell about your experience.

I have a veterinarian appointment tomorrow at 4:00 and will ask his thoughts. It sounds like Prep H would be much easier on my Jubilee, Adeline, but I guess it depends on the severity. The vet is the one that I especially like for my chickens since he has chickens, and he also runs a wild bird rehab. I stopped by there today and bought some expensive pain medicine. It's weird because Adeline's foot doesn't look that bad, but has the scab. She has been limping worse, acting like it hurts (because of the way she limps and because she slept in a nesting box last night). Tonight, she got back in the box, so DH and I set up the dog kennel hospital on the inside of the back sliding glass doors and brought her in. Broody Bonbon is housed right outside the doors. Crazy Chicken Household! I put soft towels in the kennel with paper towels on top for easy clean up. She was yacking as usual-- she's normally loud verbal. I gave her the dose of pain meds, and a little bit later, she was snoozing! My main concern was her pain. I've read that chickens don't show pain because they don't want to appear weak. So even if it appears that they did well during home surgery, they were likely in much pain. I'm guessing that it depends on the individual situation, though. Anyway, I'll keep everyone posted about my experience dealing with bumblefoot.

@browncow15 Your new chicks are so sweet! My Bonbon is sitting on eggs from ellymayRans. Are yours Bantam Cochins? I hope she did give you all the pullet eggs!

Sunflowers!
I love sunflowers, but when I've tried to grow them, some creatures eat them up (and they weren't chickens). Maybe deer? Do you put fencing around your plants?

I name my all my chickens by traits. I think 90% of my Buckeyes are named Bucky. Lol. Got one boy that limps that I call Gimp. One boy that the guineas plucked from shoulder to tail that I call Baboon. An australorp that only has toe nubs from frostbite or something that I call Skippy cause he skips instead of running... I'm horribly creative. Lol

X2 totally agree with you and am very pleased to see our new member/event page transforming! @atrueb00 its looking fantastic and giving all of us a much better view of whats happening where! Its added a lot of ease using our member, event and links page.
When @CluckAcres , @rsutr101 and I brainstormed our thread back in Dec 2012, we wanted it to be able to continue even if we left the forum. So I contacted the BYC moderators, and got the best possible set up to keep our thread going.... no matter who leaves the website, even me. (NOT HAPPENING you are stuck with me

) We used an "article" to keep the member list, events, feed mills, and avian vets....MORE. Contributors will be able to add more people that can update, modify and grow our member page.
Our article grew to a lot more info as we progressed. Now, we ask for "contributors" occasionally to keep us active.Life events keep people away. Sometimes even leave the forum (no longer interested) It is my goal to always keep an active state thread for us with an open table of discussion and support for someone just starting out, or coming back to poultry/waterfowl..Its very important to me that other folks from other states, countries.. wherever they live, feel welcome too.

Been really busy this week with Dad being home. Lots of follow up appointments, and some for Mom too.
It was great to meet up with @bradselig again, and visit. It was so hot and humid we didn't go to all the coops here.
Still sorting out ideas for breeding coops. I don't intend to hatch during winter anymore, so that's changed some thoughts on designs.
Also have some planning in the works for separating my ducks and geese.
Got pretty far with my new hog pen, Thanks to my nephew being 22 and a big strong kid

Sooooo very NOT fond of pounding fence posts in! Our poor tractor lost a front spindle last weekend and its NOT a cheap fix, ugh.
Hope to move the piglets in very soon! They are road racing around in the livestock trailer, but its a lot of extra work keeping it clean.
My lil black boar and the blue butt gilt (yes..... thats a hog breed... no kidding

) are my favorites, already running up to greet me!
And they are loving back rubs. my 2 yorkshire are surprising me, the barrow and the gilt are both still timid.
The lil girl yorkshire is very long in body, so she will grow to be a large sow.
Still trying to catch up on the thread, again LOL..

One of the birds processed was the drake that killed 2 of my hens. he was almost 2. If you let them rest, and slow cook, the mature ducks are even better IMO than the normal 11 week olds.

So good to know -- thank you for sharing!! Most likely whenever we get around to processing I'll be using the crockpot -- it likewise does wonders for older rabbits, too.

Hey, all, thought I'd check in and let y'all know what's going on in my neck of the woods. School started for me on Monday and it's been nothing short of crappy since then.

Mainly, I wanted to reply to anyone wondering about my little ducky, Wibbles. It's with a heavy heart that I must report she passed away while I was at class yesterday. She had become increasingly weak over the week and I... really wasn't surprised to find that she had given up the fight. She was not well by yesterday. She was such a precious baby, and I miss her so much. She gave me so many smiles in her short life, popping out from under the EcoGlow to look up at me, falling asleep with her little wing in my hand, nibbling at my fingers, splashing in her little tub... She was only 12 days old, but it felt like I had known her for so much longer.

Other than that (and school stress), all is well with me and my birds. The girls always help me through my worst times. As far as my future with waterfowl, we're planning on building a duck coop this fall and looking for a pair or trio of Calls for sale at the Lebanon show in October. (Anyone else going? I know that's a ways away, but I'm just wondering.) I don't think I'll try shipped eggs again (since that went so well last time). Maybe a more hardy breed if I do try hatching again.

Anyway, I have a four day weekend now, so I'll probably be more active the next few days. I'm not gonna bother to go back and reread everything, so sorry if I missed anything directed at me.

Sorry about wibbles. I bought a pair of call ducks from Lebanon two or 3 years ago. There are lots I choose from. Just make sure you get some that have at least been worked with a little. The ones I got you would have thought no one had touched them in their life. And I will b at Lebanon. I will never miss that show, it is my favorite!
