Hi everyone. Just wanting to check in. I lost a bird today, noob mistake. I started getting the coup winter ready. I took down the chicken wire under the roost boards as there were no mamas/ babies using it, and I moved the nest boxes under that space. Well no hens were laying in it. They were all just making nests in the deep litter in the corners. I moved a board to block off the corners to leave them really no options but the boxes, and one hen got back behind the wood, then couldn't get out, looks like she got her head wedged and broke her neck. Needless to say, all corners are now open. I just feel sick about it. I got 4 eggs today, so I know my hens are upset about it too. A couple of them just came to sit on me and rest their head under my arm. Even the feral kittens followed me around all night and got within a couple of feet away from me, I could have reached out and touched them tonight. Feeling pretty bummed all night.

I'm sorry to hear of the other deaths, chickens and ducks. I am very glad to hear others are healing well. Sending good hatching vibes to all those eggs!

I am so sorry. Thanks so much for posting this! We all make mistakes and its not because we are new at poultry.. just "reading" what birds will do is hard.. And sometimes, a bird places themselves where we would not think they would, and it ends badly. My quail chicks are a good example. So tiny, and I had one dart under the waterer while placing it in the brooder. I didn't see it.

Oh my, i cried when I cleaned the brooder the next morning, it was crushed. I now set up a fresh brooder box and move the chicks to it. It upset me a lot, and I just found a safer way so it won't happen again. This will help others to think out what they do to prepare for winter, or even a move in the coop.

That helps to watch for, thanks!

Everything's going really well here. My new pens are going up fast thanks to my nephew; and DH teaching him how to build things.Justin is really loving the baby ducks and they all follow him around like he is the mom!. We are actually thinking about going camping this weekend! I am very ready to get away for a day and just relax. I still owe the campground owner some [processed quail LOL.
Goodnite everyone I finally caught up again

Here's our d'Uccle crew... The hen in the pic with the rooster is also one of the ones in the hen group pic.
Very pretty!
Hey, all, thought I'd check in and let y'all know what's going on in my neck of the woods. School started for me on Monday and it's been nothing short of crappy since then. Mainly, I wanted to reply to anyone wondering about my little ducky, Wibbles. It's with a heavy heart that I must report she passed away while I was at class yesterday. She had become increasingly weak over the week and I... really wasn't surprised to find that she had given up the fight. She was not well by yesterday. :( She was such a precious baby, and I miss her so much. She gave me so many smiles in her short life, popping out from under the EcoGlow to look up at me, falling asleep with her little wing in my hand, nibbling at my fingers, splashing in her little tub... She was only 12 days old, but it felt like I had known her for so much longer.

Other than that (and school stress), all is well with me and my birds. The girls always help me through my worst times. As far as my future with waterfowl, we're planning on building a duck coop this fall and looking for a pair or trio of Calls for sale at the Lebanon show in October. (Anyone else going? I know that's a ways away, but I'm just wondering.) I don't think I'll try shipped eggs again (since that went so well last time). Maybe a more hardy breed if I do try hatching again. Anyway, I have a four day weekend now, so I'll probably be more active the next few days. I'm not gonna bother to go back and reread everything, so sorry if I missed anything directed at me.
I'm so sorry for your loss :hugs

So whats on everyone agenda for today?

Well, cut my sons hair, head for a short drive to buy an "auracana" or two this morning and then an hour drive to buy my first pair or Cream Legbars. I hope it is a true auracana, who knows anymore, but the legbars are said to be 100% pure blood from Greenfire farms so I am excited to get this breed. Only 4 months old so no eggs for a while but hopefully start breeding them in the spring. Ive only heard great things about them.

How long do u usually quarenteen your chickens when you bring home new ones? I know the auracanas were are the local fair so they had to have their shots and such and the legbars come from a breeder with good quality control but I assume I should still quarenteen.

Just wondering your thoughts.

thanks

So whats on everyone agenda for today?

Well...... we were going to start working on our winter coop, but guess what???? It's pouring down rain!
he.gif
Guess we will have to wait for a break in the rain. Hopefully it doesn't hang around all weekend. This is the only time we really have to get the "chicken chores" done, now that school has started for all 5 of us, with after school activities and having to drive an hour back and forth, it's hard to get these things done through the week. Guess I will just work on my Passive range of motion and study my nursing book for the test I have on Tues. or I guess I could just read a bunch of the forums on here.

My turkeys snatch the huge bumblebees in mid air too. They seem to show up around my main egg coop every spring. The guinea, bees don't stand a chance  they have no problems nailing them.

Is a great list of threads, and links. Good luck, we are all rooting for you! Feel free to come in and rant, or celebrate as things progress in your fight. We may have members near you that can attend council meetings too.

@Minminme
Oh no, it certainly is not that at all! I think its breathtaking. My Mom was born and raised in Hagerstown, MD. We would go thru WV to visit my grandparents. Just beautiful mountains and makes me think of them every time I meet someone living there. I envy you being able to see that beauty every day.
My coop set ups is probably pretty "redneck", and I really don't care. I repurpose anything I can to build a coop for little of no cost. I use fiberglass or aluminum truck caps to provide shade, hiding places and shelter for my birds. and housing for the ducks in the winter. Warm, waterproof and very easy to move for cleanup.  I have one truck cap I pinpoint for dustbathing in a dry area of the property. I add clean fireplace ash, construction sand and it helps them stay mite free naturally. Many people give truck caps away. My goose coop is a large aluminum snowmobile trailer top. It has an access door in the front to pull eggs. We cut a door in the low side they are able to enter at, and rolled the edges so my geese would not be cut on the metal. I use these caps because they are easy to move with the tractor, and I can scrape and compost the waste. I repurpose sheds folks no longer want for chicken, turkey, etc coops. I use tarps for shade if the trees don't provide enough. They are cheap and easy to replace.
And we have my Dad's 80 years of "stuff" he won't part with, and my DH is always swapping, selling, trading and loves his 4X4s :lau So get the banjo's out now, y'all! I would love to have a large attractive coop, but my birds don't really care what it looks like as long as they are well fed, safe and healthy. I do make a point of keeping all of it in the mid to back end of the property so its not an unpleasant view from the road, however. I respect my few neighbors enough to not lower their property value.

Sounds like you are quite the re-purposer,lol. You are right WV is a really nice place to live the mountains are amazing. Most people love the area in which they live, I have to admit though if it wasn't for the fact that my Mom, most of my siblings and all of my children live here in WV, I would not be here. The cost of living is super cheap and so are the taxes, but I am drawn to places like Colorado and Alaska. Alaska is my dream!!! Anyway there was no offense taken. I just like to give people a hard time when they start classifying West Virginians as red neck, inbred, toothless uneducated hicks. Definitely not saying that's what you did nor implied as a matter of fact...you didn't, I DID! LOL the people around here are really amazing at repurposing things too. I've learned a lot living here...now someone PLEASE save me from these redneck fools!!! Lmbo!

So whats on everyone agenda for today?
Tomatoes & green beans to can. Pick the soybeans (edamame) that are ready and freeze them. Pick and can red beets if I have time (going to make pickled beets -- yum!). Garlic is ready (past ready actually) to dig and start drying. Oh -- and I have to figure out what music I'm playing (piano) for church tomorrow! Also need to get to the nursing home today or tomorrow and give Mom a haircut....Glad it's a long weekend!
