Short story. ..
I take my boys. .whoever is up for it at the time. .but we do little"adventures" beautiful days we will just take off driving and putt around the country site seeing whatever there is to see..today we came across a little old farm house that had a sign "barn clean out sale" so we stopped and I met a wonderful family living out their dreams of a fixer upper and about every little farm critter you could want. Ducks chickens alpaca goats dogs cats and a tea cup pig and medium sized breed pig. The little guys loved it! What a wonderful day! I told her about our wonderful community of BYCERS and hope she joins us! I just love my fellow BYCER family! Just shouting out to all you awesome folks! I was bragging on us all!!!

2 of 4 walls are framed for the duck coop! We don't have the siding yet, though, so they're just sitting out there, not attached yet. 20 days until the Lebanon show! I've got to get my quarantine pen set up!

Made a treat buffet recently for all my peeps. I love not wasting anything that I end up not eating! Ozzy had all kinds of things to say about it!

Oops, missed a couple...

Next for Most breeds chicks this time of year are really really hard to get moved outside the house.  If you set eggs now, it will be the end of October when they hatch, the end of November to mid Dec when they get fully feathered.  And yet another 2-4 weeks before they are fat enough to stay warm in a coop covered in snow without needing heat. I have had fall chicks twice.  The first time I got them in September and we had a very mild winter that year.   All was well.  Then last year I got them in October and again in January right before an artic blast.  It felt like I would never get them outside. 

I might not even participate in the New years Hatch alongs for 2015 as it can be so early and the chicks just don't grow as fast if they are chilled.

Yup, this goes right along with the concept of winter acclimation for adults. I've actually read now a couple of reports that birds grown out in the fall and winter and then butchered in the spring had significantly more down than birds of the same breed raised over the spring and butchered in the fall. There's definitely something to it!

Unfortunately, though, this means that winter chicks are in for the long run! It's tricky to try and reproduce that gradual change to cold, especially if the birds are inside at room temperature. I thought, myself, of participating in the new year's hatch, but I don't think I will this time around--I get tired of cleaning the brooder before the spring chicks are outside full time! I think anyone with chicks or adolescents during that arctic blast last year would think twice about it now, though. Brr!!

So I had horrible luck hatching my lavender barred cochin eggs all year. I bought some silkies the other day who had some chicks with them. I went out yesterday to feed and noticed an extra chick in that pen! My broody bantam cochin must have hatched the chick and then the chick went exploring and took home with the silkies and their chicks! And it was a lavender barred chick! And the cochin hatched out another one today but looked like yolk wasn't absorbed all the way. Hopefully it pulls through but not holding my breath.

Also, this means I will have some silkie chicks available soon. Some are splash, but the others I'm not sure. They are from splash roo over black, blue, and buff hens.

good morning.

I'm on Indy's west side, a 22 acre organic operation of hay, soybeans, popcorn and sometimes other things like spelt, sunflowers, sweet corn, etc. We're also a certified bee farm and honey producer.

We have about three dozen layers (about 5 of them are roos), ending our second summer. We started with a mix of RIR and barred rock, but our original rooster got so aggressive that he harmed people who can to help or work on the farm. So he went thru a succession of names. Originally named Rudy, it was changed to Randy (because he was) when he matured. His name was changed to Satan when he started hurting people, and finally, he became known as Crock Pot. He was my second kill, the first being a black sex link hen who started breaking eggs.

This spring we added all buff orpington, in hopes of gentler roos.

And we have three white turkeys maturing for a fall harvest. Four Muscovy ducks (2 drakes) and 2 ducklings

All fed certified organic feed.

And my mystery kids. Their brothers look all boy at almost 5 months, but these two I can't tell. Definitely a wait and see situation.

finally caught up on posts (again) - was about a week behind . been busy with making some chicken pens inside the polebarn for before winter + needed some extra places for roos we gonna eventually eat or for the younger birds . will be adding a 2nd 4x8 in front of the 8x12 in the picture - still some details to finish up on, but you'll get the general idea of the design :

. . . . . & in other chicken news - we lost one of our young iowa blue cockerels (hatched in june) - guessing he was chasin' after one of the hens (who tends to wander across the road occasionally) & figure he got hit by a vehicle . found maybe a dizen feathers, but no bird - probably wedged in someones car grill

I typed another post but it didn't go through, so I apologize if this has shown up twice! There is a girl (in VA, where I'm picking up some BOs from) she said to tell my chicken friends that she has a pair of OEGB Show Quality BB Reds she is willing to sell for $15.00.
If anyone is interested I am doing a chicken train from VA to Richmond IN. Will pick up birds in VA next Saturday and then they will b guaranteed at my home until the following Tuesday when I will drive to Richmond to deliver to the next leg of the train. (Hopefully JChny2000. (?)

@Minminme So thats a week from tuesday? Maybe... I will check the calender. What time, about did you want to meet? Send me a PM with all the details, and I will see if I can make it work. Be a good excuse to visit my MIL/FIL if they will be home.

I'm so excited!!!

I got 8 new silkie babies yesterday and 2 frizzles and 2 other cochins. They are so adorable. I got black and blue, I can't wait to see how they turn out and if I got girls or boys. So hopeing for lots of girls. I know one one the cochins I got is a boy ( he has a bigger comb) but I got him to go with the same color girl I already have. Also my DH got me some breeding cages done today. I will be using them in the spring for my bantam cochins and silkies and frizzle/silkie crosses. Right now some of our show bantams and one of my big girls are in there and they seem to like it. I think these cages will also make great broody spots for my girls next year.

Would anybody mind sounding off on any pullets they have for sale or re-homing?

I wouldn't want to drive much further than Indy. And I'm pretty much done with chicks for the year unless someone has a breed I really want!!

I have had some predator attacks lately. My DF thought it was my dog, but she can't get inside the coop. (Vindicated!!)

The boys are on high alert and the girls are sticking close. I have the traps set and everything.

So I'm still thinking about getting the little launcher guns for the "bird bangers". No one can mistake that - especially if you can produce it and show that is what it's designed for. If I remember correctly, there are 2 different ranges that they shoot so you can get the one that makes sense w/your property. They also have the "screamers" that you can use with them instead of bangers if you prefer the scream


ETA: I might try a few bottle rockets first and see how well I can aim them
