INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

pipd~ Thanks for the advice! I did a quick search, but read a lot of posts about chickens yawning when they're tired . . . hopefully that's what it was. I had noticed her yawning frequently and my son and his GF said she was yawning one after another. Naturally, after I made the post, I went outside and never saw her yawn again!  I will check her crop in the morning and keep observing her. She's been eating and drinking normally.

That is very interesting about the worm conversation! My chickens normally go crazy over worms-- except for some huge ones that are disgusting. It seems likely that there is something wrong with the worm population since they tend to avoid things that they shouldn't eat. On the other hand, there are so many varieties of worms-- and how does chickens' aversion to worms spread through Indiana? Do they tweet about it? :p  It's interesting, too, that when Bonbon began bringing her chicks outside of her coop two weeks ago, they ate small worms. About a week later I noticed that Bonbon and the chicks were no longer interested in worms. One "theory" that crossed my mind is that maybe they choose to eat insects that are available during the warm months and "save" worms since they're available year-round. I'm trying to remember if my chickens ate worms during summer 2013 (a faint memory). I'm thinking that they weren't as crazy about them as they were in the winter months. That doesn't explain why Bonbon and chicks suddenly stopped. :/

Yeah, they do have a tendency of doing things only to worry us and not ever doing them again. Hopefully she was just sleepy!

My girls used to go nuts for worms, too, but it was like a few years ago they all decided to stop. I see them grab the occasional worm, but otherwise they turn their beaks up at them. Picky hens! It does make you wonder, though. Maybe it's like I said in the last paragraph--they do things just to worry us.

P.S. Looking forward to baby Cochin pictures! ;) Hint-hint. Here's Mr. Po when he was 3 weeks old:

Eeeeeeekkkk!!! Baby Po was so cute!!

I've been having the cochin itch again. lol i am cut off until at least spring.

Oh, I'm with you there! I don't have any room in my coop, though, so any plans on getting Cochins again will have to wait. :/ Luckily, I now have a very nice incubator, so if I do get a rooster I adore and lose him like what happened with Po, I can immediately incubate some eggs rather than waiting for one of the hens to go broody. :D

Po was a cutie, wasn't he? :love Him and his little fuzzy feet!

(Yup, those fuzzy feet! :love )

I had another almost dog incident yesterday. One of my Isbar hens must have made it into the dog yard somehow (they are so small she probably fit through the fence) and I saw No-No-Bad-Dog take off looking far too excited and then heard panicked sqwaking. I started shrieking and took off at a run and just as I was about to turn the corner I saw a panicked Hen flying off towards the coop trailing a puff of feathers. I thought for sure she must have been damaged. No-No-Bad-Dog came running with a face full of feathers and immediately put herself in her kennel (she knows the behavior is bad....she just doesn't care). I went over to check the Isbar over and I couldn't even tell which one it was..... other than losing some butt fluff in her attempt to get back through the fence with a dog hanging off her rear she seems relatively unscathed and hopefully a bit more street smart now.

What an ordeal! I wish the dang birds would just be happy in their 3 acre area!!!!! And it is not a surprise that the dogs have the run of the yard...the chickens are very used to seeing them over there...

Does anyone know of a place in northwest Indiana (we are in Valpo) that will process roosters for me?

I know one in Nappanee/Goshen area but probably too far from you?

How far are you from Kewana,IN? I know some folks there that take their chickens to a processor that I could connect you with if you're anywhere near that area.

p

I'm not sure where Kewana is, it didnt show up on my gps search.

Napanee is only about an hour and fifteen minutes away. Depending upon price, that might be doable!

If you are looking for just any rooster, we have more than a few that will be processed this month through November. You are welcome to come get a nice sized rooster for $10 or I have 1 giant red rooster for $20. The $10 roosters include reds and sumatras.

Boo, my last chicks didn't give me a proper chick fix because they were broody raised by my evil BLRW who would flog me whenever I made an attempt to touch them. Not letting her hatch again! Plus she is super ditzy and kept losing 1 of them. Seriously....if you can't count to three you for sure don't deserve to be a mother.
