INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Spent some time outside today with the girls. Got three sides of one coop covered with plastic but need to go out and staple it down a little better. Thought I'd share some pictures of my new additions (they were rescue birds, sort of.) the lady I got them from was having to downsize (way down) because she couldn't afford feed for them, the last three days she had them the only they had t eat was some biscuits she baked for the family that got too done and the next two days pancakes that were leftover. They ate like they were starved on the way home! Well anyway I now have a mating trio of Russian Orloffs, and four Buff Orp pullets that are within a couple weeks of laying.

How have you been?  I'll admit to scanning most of the posts lately but I seem to remember a toe injury due to flip flops then possibly a fall making hard to get around and spend time with your birds.

Yes had a fairly bad incident while mowing my yard (on a riding mower) in flip flops. After getting infected (because I stepped-barefooted-in a puddle of yukky water from the duck pond) it has managed to heal very well. Also yes I took a fall and sprained my ankle...I'm an accident waiting to happen lately! It has also healed, but my family seems to b taking turns babysitting me to keep me off the mower and away from the heavy chores. Which is nice but frustrating too. Thank you for asking.

Busy weekend, so I am catching up . . .

@pipdzipdnreadytogo You have some Lucky Ducks! I'm not sure if I've heard of a duck coop before. Where's the indoor pool?

@racinchickins I haven't caught up on all of the weekend posts, but I hope your chickens are responding to Tylan.

@atrueb00 He/she is adorable! Splash-- or what's the official coloring?
I ran across these photos I took a month or two ago . . . Interpretations are interesting.

What would you do with an empty Ball jar?

I arranged a "Still Life."

A week later, I walked in the kitchen and saw this:

My geeky son had stopped by and made a fruit fly catcher.
How thoughtful (and gross).

[COLOR=900000]Well, I ended up having to bring a hen inside already.

My little Sebright, Rosie, is pretty much naked right now with her molt and was huddled in one of the nests with a blue hue to her comb and wattles the other night. I've learned from my last hard molting hen, I don't want to lose my Rosie! As such, I've tried out my amateur seamstress skills and made her a little sweater out of the leg of one of my niece's outgrown pairs of sweatpants. My little model was very patient with the entire effort. (And don't mind the messy carpet, Rosie decided to dump her feed all over the place.

[COLOR=900000]"Do I really have to wear this?" She spent most of yesterday trying to get it off...

[COLOR=900000]She's been doing well spending the nights inside and going back out once it warms up during the day. I'm hoping I can make sure she acclimates fine in doing so. I really don't want to have her out of the flock all winter.

I have started scooping my oegbs and the little sebrights up too, they all are looking uncomfortable and ruffly. The little girls are spending a lot more time on my lap if i sit down, snuggling. They want to be in the big birds coop so badly! They have their own winter coop I can confine them to and keep them warm. If I do keep my quail going thru the winter, they will be going in there also.
Quote: @ellymayrans has great Marans. I got mine from her.
I second that! I have a lovely rooster from racin who originated from ellymayryans. His color and type is just perfect IMO. The personality is excellent, very sweet to his girls, and nice to me too. My girls are from Trey in Corydon, they are just as sweet and gorgeous.
My Birchen are from Treys line. Clean legged, and a nice silver birchen color, no red/orange bleeding through. I love the dark eggs, and I really appreciate a beautiful bird.

Well one of the 6 ducklings only has one eye. The other eye may be there but it is sealed shut and looks a little swollen. It can move around good and looks healthy otherwise. Anyone have any experience with this issue? Or have suggestions of things I should do to help?

This is the bad eye, sorry it is very hard to get good pics with such dark fuzz

This is the good eye

A different duckling
Soooo precious! Carefully wash the eye with infant water and a makeup swab. Being newborn, it may have got dust in its eye and just needs help. Saline rinse is also a safe solution for it.

I have a pair of 5-6 week old blue Swedish free to good home. I am trying to get a pair of Muscovy but Im downsizing which means I need to rehome. So seriously they're free. They've been living outside, with a heat lamp and no issues. Pm me if you're interested.
Best of luck! Pictures always help!

Looking for advice for winter:
My coop & run have 140 sq ft of floor space (not counting nest boxes or extra roosts). Last winter we had 9 stand sized chickens locked inside with no problems. This spring/summer they started free ranging. They rush outside as soon as I open the run. When it rains, they decide whether to go in or stay out. Life is good.
We hatched, added, subtracted, etc. At this point we're at 16. I have a group of 3 very tightly bonded pullets that I could easily rehome. They sleep with the flock but never really mingle during the day. One of my favs is in this group, so I've been dragging my feet on giving away my sweet Coronation Sussex. I just don't see her "hang" with any other chickens. That's why I say I could easily rehome the 3 amigos. The rest of the flock wouldn't notice their absence.
Anyway, my questions are: 1. Will the chickens continue to spend most of the day outside when there's snow? 2. Could 15 large & 1 bantam share 140 sq ft + free range during the winter? (What I've read said I'd need 160 sq ft or more.) 3. If I rehome them, how can I increase the odds of a good home?
I knew about "chicken math" but my coop & run looked so huge. I never thought I'd fill it up - and in only 2 years!
I know the number is 4 square ft per bird. There are members well versed I hope will post. You aren't kidding, doesn't take long to fill up a coop!

I am so grateful for BYC. Now I make sure they have several dust bath stations.
Quote: I have that too! It does well, mine is so old, Its starting to show wear and wobbles. I need to replace the parts but want it for breads and so many other yummy things! I grind and do a lot of sausages etc.

I am offline for just five days and I am so far behind - this is such an active thread!

The last chick has hatched from the last batch of 2014 for me. I had six Cemani eggs and two made it to hatch. Also in with them were two Serama and six Jaerjon. They are all happily settled into the brooder and the incubator has been turned off until it's time to start hatching for spring.

One of the Jaerjon cockerels had a weird problem at hatch. I've hatched hundreds of chicks and I had never seen this before. It was like his legs wouldn't work at first. He would scootch around on his butt with his legs stuck out in front of him. Other than that, he seemed healthy - very perky and interacted with the other chicks, and he started to eat right away. He seems to be gaining strength now and is starting to stand up a bit more the last time I checked, so I think it's going to be a temporary problem. Has anyone else encountered this with a chick?

Here are my Cemani babies:

Since I got two cockerels and four pullets with my Jaerjon hatch, I might be persuaded to part with a pair if someone is interested. They are my top pick for the backyard flock - hands down!

Hope everyone had a lovely weekend. Mine went way too quickly, but the DH and I made major headway in winter prep inside the chicken shed. Very grateful for the mild temps we had.

Blessings all!
Vitamin and electrolites help a lot for a weak chick, Awesome hatch! I want to add them next year, will be asking in the early spring about eggs.

evening chicken hug for y'all (our silver IaB (tiny dancer) covering her wing over RSL cross young cockerel (Larry Bird)).
Awwww thats just too sweet
