INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I just checked on the legbar again. She has some major mobility issues. She's just hunched back on her tail with wings slightly spread. Can't or won't walk or stand. She is at least eating some yogurt, gobbled up a couple spoonfuls already.

Any other illnesses I should be looking at? I'm really hoping not to lose this hen. She is the nicest of the three I have.

My legbars came from Racin and Brad on here. I haven't heard them say anything about sick birds so I'm guessing this is localized to my house
I've recently had some issues with respiratory problems in my flock that I posted on here, but my CLs don't seem to be affected by it. And I haven't seen anything resembling mobility issues with any of my birds. Pip'd mentioned vitamin deficiency. What do you feed your flock? Is she way down on the pecking order where she might not be getting enough? I hope she makes it. It's tough to lose a bird, especially one so close to laying.

It's also a good possibility she ate something she shouldn't, especially since she is the only one affected. I had a turkey knock a box of fence staples on the ground, and when I came in the barn, the chickens were gathered around pecking at them. Luckily they were too big to fit in their mouths, but it wasn't for lack of trying. They also ate most of a piece of solid insulation that was blown out of the back of my truck. Surprisingly, there doesn't seem to be any effects from that.

I feed "all flock" to all of my birds, with oyster shell available on the side. These birds haven't gotten oyster shell yet because they are just now getting to laying age. Is there any chance that lack of calcium could cause this?

She made it through the night but with no improvement. I've never seen a bird sitting on the ground the way she is. Just kinda sitting/laying on her side and butt. I took the water with Corrid away and gave her regular water with electrolytes.

Mother's Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Saturday is the best day usually; not all the vendors stay both days; early is better. I have a class on Saturdays (They get an online assignment for Lebanon!), so my sister handled Milton till I could get there. My peacocks were sold before we even unloaded the truck (5 AM) and she had sold out by 10:30 and was waiting for me with cages stacked and ready to load.

Great info - THANKS!

I give our girls Kale almost daily and they make the cutest noises! Maude is the Barred Rock in front, she is my best friend and has to get as close to me as possible when I'm in the run. Thought you folks would enjoy their morning snack.

Yes without iron and you can find it at any pharmacy or Super Center that has Vitamins. Look for it where they sell baby vitamins because that's what it actually is. Vitamins in liquid form for Babies or very young children.

@jchny2000 Yes my girls are 13 eggs total, but Im sure some won't develop. As far as transitioning goes, these may be in the house a few months. Normally I put them with the flock at 8 weeks or so. I usually wait for a freak warm winter day to put them with the flock, but we didnt get one of those last year. Lol this year is in the air as far as planning goes. I didnt really want to hatch this late in the year, but since I want to breed paints, if I waited until spring to start it would take forever to get breeding going. I like winter for grow out time, that way they are breeding age by spring.

Anyone else see feathered wet rats running around their yards today?

Ugh yes. So much rain lately. Enough already!

Silkie Chickens:
I've been seeing a lot of pretty, fluffy birds here lately. Do they honestly look like that? Don't they get "dirty" or did you just finish fixing them up for the photo? I'm serious b/c I have no experience with them. We only have the common clean-legged, standard sized chickens.
All my silkies except the white ones look great all the time, unless it rains. Even when they dry out though, they look really good. The white ones though, they tend to show any little bit of dirt and get baths more often.

Love the chicken on the horse! :)

[COLOR=900000]She's been doing well spending the nights inside and going back out once it warms up during the day. I'm hoping I can make sure she acclimates fine in doing so. I really don't want to have her out of the flock all winter.

What a great idea. Even if she doesn't like it, it will keep her warm. Hope the feathers grow in quickly!

Hi there, we're Shane and Courtney from Indianapolis. We got our 8 sweet girls in June and are nearly finished with our coop. We were excited to see an Indiana thread here! Here's a pic of some of our girls and our coop. We have 4 Ameraucanas (Vivienne, Mona, Opal, & Harriet), 2 Barred Rocks (Maude & Myrtle), a Buff Orpington (Agnes), and Ginger our Rhode Island Red.

For those that are interested, I have an update on my Tylan usage for some respiratory issues in my flock.
Thank you for posting! I'll get this added to the member's page.

I started raising our own food animals because of my parents. I care for both full time, and they live with us. A majority of their health issues are in part caused by processed, hybridized, and GMO'd food we buy these days at the grocery and restaurant . I decided it was time to provide my family real, healthy food from our own home. I know what my animals eat (mostly, you know how chickens are
sickbyc.gif
) and how they are treated. That was my 2nd issue, I do not like how commercial farms treat their animals. The least I can do is offer compassion and good care to that animal that feeds my family. My hog knows I love him and gets a lot of back and ear scratches, pets and attention from us. Even tho he will have 1 bad day, he has had a full life wallering in the mud and rooting the ground. He felt love while he is here.
Just love this, Janet! For real. Wish more people were like you. People always say how can I be a vegetarian and not mind processing carcasses/prepping it? I like to ask them how they buy meat and not think about it coming from a whole animal? People seem to have a hard time eating meat when they think about the fact they are just eating muscle. I have no problem touching it or processing it, because I know what it is, and what the animal's life can give to others. Purchasing packaged, ground up meat has really changed our perspective on food. I like to feel more connected to it, and know what I am eating.

This has been a very tough week for me. Last Friday, I got a letter from the city saying I needed to remove the chickens from my property by November 9. Someone supposedly complained about the chickens and honeybees. I don't really believe this. All of my adjacent neighbors love my chickens. They come and visit them every week. They bring their kids and grand kids over to walk around the garden, play with the chickens, watch the bees work and help "on the farm". They also get free eggs and honey. The letter says I need 10 acres to have chickens. They included the ordinance they are citing, and when I read the ordinance, it actually says I need 0.2 acres for chickens. I actually own 0.33 acres and personally called the mayor's office and 2 different departments to make sure chickens were legal in city limits before buying them.

Sadly, I am not going to fight this. Instead, I am going to re-locate my chickens to my cousin's farm in Terre Haute this weekend. He has graciously offered to let me keep the chickens on his land indefinitely.

So why I am I not going to fight this? Because I am taking a page from Atlas Shrugged and leaving this place. I am getting everything in order to sell my house and move out of this place asap. I am taking my tax dollars with me and going to move out into the country, hopefully closer to my family in Terre Haute. I wanted to move anyways, but I am not going to wait until next year anymore.

Apparently, there are currently no ordinances banning beekeeping within city limits, so I don't have to move them right away. However, I have heard rumors that they are going to ban bees in town soon too. The town I live in is so backwards. As cities across the US, including Indianapolis, Chicago and even New York City, are passing laws to protect backyard beekeepers and chicken keepers, my tiny city is moving towards an outright ban.

That is what I feed mine, so shouldn't be any issues there. I don't think lack of calcium would be an issue until after she started laying. I've never had an issue with an adult or sub-adult bird just laying down on me, so I'm not sure what to suggest. It sounds like you have some more to try. I hope it works. Keep us posted.
