Does anybody have a link to this heat tape? I have never used it or heard of it. I am assuming I is pretty easy to use

Its pretty cool stuff. We have some, I wrapped my frost free hydrant by the coops so I don't have to shut it off yet. search it on google or your preferred hardware place.

Is it snowing down south? Looked like a blizzard around here for about an hour around 5 p.

Made me remember why I wanted to put the birds in the barn for the winter.

we got an inch here in pendleton, and its melted.

Who heats their coop? Not including water heaters.
I've been doing a lot of reading here, but hard to get answers from people that live in the same state.
It was 27 this morning in the coop. Not sure to heat our coop or not..

Average breeds do not need heat. They do need draft free dry housing. What breeds do you have, that makes a difference too.

I am a little nervous because I found 3 eggs yesterday from my Easter Eggers with little brown spots. Are the eggs ok? Are the girls ok? Also do you take chickens to the vet? I was worried maybe the cold could be the problem.

They are ok. post pics if you can, but it sounds like bloom, or calcium deposits (a natural thing) which will appear as irregular. Some of us do use avian vets, and its ok! we all want to provide the best care we can to our babies.

Catching up, but keep falling asleep! Finally was able to put our hog to rest in the freezer. Thought the deep freeze had failed, ugh! But it was just the power cord. Did not start processing until after 2pm. Been a very long day. Hope everyone is well, be back tomorrow.

I would also like some silkies. Just post on here when they are ready and how much you want for them. We had two hens and two roos but one of the hens was taken by a predator. The roos try to "share" the remaining hen but it doesn't work well.

Hey guys, if any of you knit or crochet, we will have our alpaca yarn back from the mill in a few weeks. Let me know if you want some soft hypoallergenic yarn! Also I'm hatching silkies and I can't keep them all, so if anyone wants some cute fluffy gifts this year for someone special, I'll have some ready in the next months or two.

Also, love Alpaca yarn. We just started with Angora rabbits hoping to get some fiber for yarn. Where did you find a mill that will turn the fiber into yarn? My daughter says we need a spinning wheel but they are very expensive.

NOT I! Lol! I know they are excellent flyers. .right up to a shoulder if they please! Now..frizzled. .That's another story! They jump..but that's about the extent for them.
Speaking of which. So I haven't gotten any pics sent to me from my sister to post but I got the call I was worried about today!
My dad called asking if I'd come get the chicks because my sister isn't taking care of them. It's sad..she's 19 (20 soon) and can't be responsible enough to care for 4 chicks! They are almost fully feathered but not quite! So disappointed. I was afraid when she asked me to hatch her some and just knew I'd take them back if I had to. just really hoped it would work out.

Her 4 of course appears to consist of 1 girl 3 boys! ! Geez!

I didnt get pics of them. It was so nerve wracking peeling out 3 wrapped chicks, I didnt think to document it. Although usually my silkie broodies hatches are textbook,one of my chicks got tangled in my broodies foot feathers causing her to panic and stand up while the eggs were hatching. I freed the chick and waited for the last 3 of the six eggs under her to hatch. When things started taking too long I checked them and three were externally pipped but the membrane was dried and yellow. So that is my signal to intervene. I basically just take the air cell end off slowly avoiding the inner membrane, down to the 'zip' line. Then I moisten the inner membrane to check for veins. If they haven't receded the chick goes back under mom until they do. If they have receded down to the 'zip' line (where the chick would have zipped, or base of the air cell end) then I start to gently peel away the inner membrane to that point. Then I put the chick under mom to absorb any yolk that is left, and kick itself out when it is ready. I do check it here and there to make sure the membrane isn't sticking to it around the egg shell so it can get out when it is time. All three wrapped chicks are fluffed and fine this morning with their 3 hatch mates that hatched on their own.
