INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I didnt get pics of them. It was so nerve wracking peeling out 3 wrapped chicks, I didnt think to document it. Although usually my silkie broodies hatches are textbook, one of my chicks got tangled in my broodies foot feathers causing her to panic and stand up while the eggs were hatching. I freed the chick and waited for the last 3 of the six eggs under her to hatch. When things started taking too long I checked them and three were externally pipped but the membrane was dried and yellow. So that is my signal to intervene. I basically just take the air cell end off slowly avoiding the inner membrane, down to the 'zip' line. Then I moisten the inner membrane to check for veins. If they haven't receded the chick goes back under mom until they do. If they have receded down to the 'zip' line (where the chick would have zipped, or base of the air cell end) then I start to gently peel away the inner membrane to that point. Then I put the chick under mom to absorb any yolk that is left, and kick itself out when it is ready. I do check it here and there to make sure the membrane isn't sticking to it around the egg shell so it can get out when it is time. All three wrapped chicks are fluffed and fine this morning with their 3 hatch mates that hatched on their own. :)

They are so CUTE! I want one!

I agree. I may have to get a silkie someday. I'm so impressed on how fluffy they always look. Of course, I'm convinced you guys must bath & fluff them often. Do silkies get along with large breed hens or do they stick with their own kind?
Mine get along with most other chickens. If there is a rumble it's usually because one of the silkies started it. They are very sweet natured but have zero concept of their size. They will do fine with larger chickens, but keep in mind they have vaulted skulls, meaning they can get neuro damage easily from a peck in the head. I don't bathe mine, they stay clean for the most part as long as their bedding is clean and dry. Wood chips and sand are the best things I have found for them.

I have one silkie hen and the rest of my hens are large breeds. She holds her own just fine. In fact they tend to stay away from her b/c she will pull their feathers if they bother her. She is very sweet to the kids who hold her often. She also lays every day. My two silkie roos also hold their own just fine. They will actually tumble with the large roo once in a while but he backs down. They actually try to mate with the large hens. I'm not sure if they are successful but they get an A for effort. When it is time to roost everyone snuggles together. I'm not sure the silkies realize they are any smaller than the others.

These past few months have been horribly busy and jam packed. Good news is that my family has successfully moved into our new house! Yay! Also, my chickens are very happy, they have a new and bigger coop to play around in. But I've got four roos and roos to be together out of thirteen birds. Oh Boy!

Aside from that I'll be trying to catch up on the thousands of pages I've missed. Hah! Also, welcome to any new peeps.

goat people. I would love to have some of you post great hints for the upcoming breeding season. Such as good places to find buck services. What the general cost of buck services are or if the buck owner is entitled to some of the kids. For this year my goal is to get milk from 1 doe. But I was considering getting 2 does pregnant so one doe could provide most of the kids milk. Goat formula is costly.
Also it looks like hand milking is not going to be a big favorite thing around here. So I'm also welcoming all recommendations for a milker that would work quickly enough for at most 3 goats. Next year I would have 3 goats of milking ages.

Aww yep definitely partridge. What color are her parents?

The parents are a black roo/ white hen. It has 7 siblings that range in color from black, grey, lavender with some yellow, to some just lavender colored ones. I can't wait to see them grow out to see what color they will eventually be. It was like Christmas morning when they were hatching, because I wasn't sure what colors I would end up with. But the little partridge was really a surprise!

Unfortunately my hen has stopped laying or I would probably be hatching her eggs all winter.

Now I can't wait for spring. My grey's,blacks, and other whites will be ready to start laying by January.
