As for treatment, I would recommend switching to Tylan. Terra-Vet is a Tetracycline, which is not as potent as Tylan, and Vet Rx only treats the symptoms, not the cause. You can continue to give them Vet Rx if you think it's making them more comfortable, but if you switch to Tylan, I would take them off the Terra-Vet. There are several forms of Tylan, but the most common is the injectable. Tylan injectable can be given orally if you are nervous about giving a shot, although you may sacrifice some potency in doing so. The dose for Tylan 50 whether injecting or giving orally is the same, 1/2 cc for large fowl and 1/4 cc for bantams once a day, but you do this for 3 days when injecting and 5 days when giving orally.
For those that have given injections to poultry. Where is the best place on the bird to give the injection?
If its IM i inject into the chest, think of the shape of the birds meat area. try to go for the meatiest area they have. SQ is under the skin, and several members are correct, raise the skin to create a drape and inject. TSC has good quality syringes, and needles. I choose the shortest they offer for IM injection or subQ.

Quote: Next question. Where would I get a syringe and needles for injections?
TSC or Rural king carries them. Online I use jeffers or valleyvet.

Just wondering if anyone has heard from Barb S lately. I had issues with my phone and it deleted all my past conversations and many of my phone numbers (even th ones that were backed up)! Need her phone number back!!! I miss my buddy!
I just upgraded mine and don't have hers either. try sending her a pm. She has so much going! Agreed, she has a kind heart and is a good caring person..

Can silkies fly? What does it look like when they try?
LOL I have seen attempts but not here. some hens will try, and do ok, kinda... It mostly looks like a massive fail.

Cat vs Chickens?

Two neighborhood cats are a couple houses away & looking toward my chickens! My roo (who rarely crows) made a lot of noise for about 2 min straight. My dog was frantically digging at the fence trying to get to them. The cats have lived in the neighborhood for over 4 years and can be seen roaming free. They have rarely entered our yard. I know our dogs discourage most animals from entering, but my dogs will have to come inside at some point. If the cats do decide to visit, will an Orpington rooster be able to protect the hens? Honestly, I'm not sure if the cats are interested in a chicken dinner, but they were looking. Although I'm sure a barking dog trying to rip them apart would also be something they would want to watch. Do cats like to hunt chickens? I have no experience with cats.

I have found for needles the best go is from wal-mart, cvs, ect.. ask for diabetes short needles and you can get them for .50 cc or 1 depends on what your needing. tylan is a very thick medicine and it does take a few to get in the needle but the extra time is worth it. the needle has less chance of hitting something it shouldnt and is much smaller and less painful for the bird. as far as the cats, It just really depends on the cat itself. I had a really bad mouse problem and i kept a cat in the coop with my smallest bantams. he caught the mice and left the chickens alone. a hen or rooster should put a cat in there place. if a cat is starving it will attempt to eat any thing.

you dont need a prescription for the needles but you will fill out your name and address in their book and they cost around 15 dollars for a hundred but i dont think you have to buy them by the box.

I have a question about venting our coop. Originally my husband was going to add vents at roof line at both ends of the coop, but now he wants to add two copulas on the roof. Will that be enough ventilation? Should we add the vents at the front and back of coop at top like we originally planned ?

Here is a picture of future coop, we have now decided to add an enclosed run with a roof to the back of coop for protection against predators.

If budget is not a concern, I'd do both. Gable vents at either end, and box vents on the roof itself, as long as you're confident that you can get the box vents installed without compromising the roof and causing a leak. And really, instead of box vents I'd install turbine vents - you'll get a bit more airflow.

The rule of thumb for ventilation is you can't have too much.
