Chicken health question: I noticed that one of my hens had a seepy eye last evening. This afternoon when I went to feed, both of her eyes were completely swollen shut. She had no nasal discharge, no cough and no foul odor. Because I have some rare, expensive birds, I decided to process her and a rooster I then discovered with one eye slightly swollen. Before I take any more steps to cull further, I was hoping I might get some additional input regarding what might be going on. Everything I have read indicates that the potential illness cannot be cured - only symptoms alleviated and the bird remains a permanent carrier. If that is the case, I am going to have to cull all of my adult birds and keep my fingers crossed that none of my chicks have experienced exposure yet.

Thoughts? Advice?

Thanks in advance ...

Down to about 10-12 extra roosters and a handfull of laying ducks I need to re home before I'm set on my winter flock. I can hardly believe it is almost time to start collecting eggs to set for the new years hatch.

was there any rattle in the breathing or bubbles in the eye? have you added any new birds?  new food?

No rattles in the breathing. No coughing or sneezing. No nasal discharge. No new birds.

I just talked with a bird friend and she suggested that perhaps they just got stressed and then sick because I moved them from a large coop into cages in a shed for the winter. I am going to add apple cider vinegar to their water this evening and keep a close eye on them.

I can only help a little bit. they shouldnt have swelled eyes from stress unless they are carriers all ready . the will "break out" in times of stress. they sound nothing like mg birds and my guess would be an allergy . is there something different where you moved them to? fumes, paint cans , ect.... I hope i am telling you right but i have dealt with the mgs and it just dont sound that way to me.

I agree if it was MG there would be more than just the swollen eyes. I also agree that it is a flare up. That being said I haven't got a clue. Maybe a change in environment like you are saying
