INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am sorry I have been mia lately! Got big news...

1. I got a job at a company that makes baking products, and as some of you know, I love to bake!
2. I moved to Terre Haute last weekend and started the job on Monday. I have a ton of family in and around TH and love being so close to them all.
3. Officially tied the knot with DH on December 8. Married my best friend and so happy right now!
4. I have been reunited with my chickens! (And it feels so good

Congratulations

Looking for splash silkies if anyone close to Louisville Ky has any for sale. I have been searching for a long time and haven't had any luck. If you have some or know someone that does, can you send me a message with information please.

I have a splash silkie, who I thought was a pullet but I am pretty sure is a cockerel. He/she was hatched in mid July and isn't crowing. Here they are a couple months ago, I cant get pics to upload from mobile and the internet is out. Located in Terre Haute.

I kept forgetting to order one, but finally did today- a Brinsea EcoChic 20 heater for the brooder. Anyone else use one?
I bought one this fall--love it. I have 4 babies who are actually about 10 weeks old but one is a frizzled polish and so more sensitive to the cold. When they got too tall to fit under it, I set the legs on blocks.

I have the eco glow in the coop right now for the 6 and 8 week old silkie chicks. They aren't using it though, they would rather sleep next to the 3 warm hens in there. I have used it for babies without moms though. Its pretty great. :)

Mystery of the new layer.....
Both my CS (5mo) & LavOrp (8mo) have red combs, so I was guessing that one had to be my new layer. Saw my LavOrp in a nest box this morning & thought AhHa! She jumped out & I sadly found the box wet with smooshed eggshell. A few min later I saw my BlkOrp (8mo) AND my LavOrp both tying to fit in the same nest box. Now I know how the egg got smashed. I also have a 3rd candidate.....

Note: We're that strange family that can name the hen who laid the egg just by looking at the egg. My daughter also charts the egg production. She can tally how many eggs each chicken has laid, their 1st egg day, their hatch date, molting & broody dates, etc. After collecting the eggs, we write the date & hen's name. Our family, friends, & neighbors enjoy knowing exactly where their breakfast comes from. We even get requests for a specific hen's eggs. Then of course there's my son who only wants to eat his hen's (Firefighter's) eggs. LOL

These winter low egg numbers barely take care of our own needs, so that's why a new layer is such a big deal.

I love mine! Eight 2 week olds under it now. They go between it and running around the coop all day. It's just like having a momma hen in there that stands real still

And no fire hazard or hot lamp smell. This is nice since they're in the laundry room!

Something unusual happened today. My SLW pulley was running around in the yard and the other two hens were chasing her. I thought that was strange so I stopped and took a closer look. The SLW had a pair of frog legs hanging out of her mouth and the chase was on. I could not believe they found a frog this time of year and in below freezing temps. Maybe it is another sign of early spring.

That's so funny. I can't say frog legs sound very appetizing to me, but I'm glad your hens found them so enjoyable.

Now that's funny right there!
