We got a lot of snow this weekend. Local schools are all closed as we dig our way out from 17". On the bright side, all the kids are having a blast outside today.





Here's the measurement taken from the top of a garbage can

you can call your local electrical company and they have people that will drop off truck loads of chips for free....also I would try sand...everything I have will be going to sand once this winter is gone...its super cheap, keeps the moisture, bugs, diseases away and keeps the floor clean by itself with the birds they wont get poo stuck to there legs like using other mediums. hope this helps
edited to add that was the bedding that was layed down a year ago for plants and then I got a bunch of birds and had to put them somewhere so I put them in there...straw is in there now

Is anyone looking into getting certified to be an NPIP tester? I am looking into it but the antigen is pretty pricey, didn't know if anyone would want to split an order.

All this talk and picture posting about the snow is depressing. :/ This is why I wanted to get pictures of the woods greening up last spring.

I measured the snow...we only got 7 inches! It feels like so much more than that!

Snow was out on the yard this morning and a bit more fell down through out the day but for the most part I would say much less than an inch accumulated. There might have been 2 inches in the places the wind blew the snow from our driveway. The medium woodchip pile has melted its snow top already. There must be some composting still going on in the pile. Just amazing.

As for the turkeys, they got moved into the large chicken coop with the RIRs. So far everyone is getting along almost great. For the first few hours the turkey hens ruled over all but something happened and soon the RIR hens took control. So every once in a while I'll hear the tom turkey get uptight or all puffed out as a RIR hen tries to peck a turkey hen that is almost twice her size. I have seen several roosters puff and such for each other. But the tom turkey can actually be heard when he puffs out and spreads his tail. It almost sounds like many people turning to a page in a thick book all at once, English lit class memories.

I could have some bantam frizzled black Cochin chicks in May for you but you're quite a distance from me. May ask around if any plans on a "Chicken Train" around that time. You might just luck out! Let me know.

I am certified, and my stash of antigen is good through sometime in June. If you want to split my bottle with me, that would benefit us both. PM me if interested. I'm in Zionsville.

I work in Indy a few days a week so that would work out for you if you made the trip on a Monday or Tuesday. When breeding for frizzle you will get both smooth feathered and frizzled, if you plan on wanting to breed down the road you will want at least one of each. Of course it usually takes about a week before you can tell if they are going to be frizzled or not, gender takes longer but Cochin are pretty early to tell but that takes several weeks if you're lucky. So it all depends on what your goals are and if you want them as day olds then all those things are a toss up. I'll let you tell me want you want.
