Wanted to share some current photos of the SFH. Now I just need to get a not-too-closely-related boy

The younger kiddos @ 40 weeks.

This girl still isn't showing a lot of flowers.







I call this girl Sally (as in "Sally Sunshine"). She is the first to do everything...always the most curious and quite an enjoyable personality. She does not have any tan...only black with white flowering. Sally likes to stand on the water bucket.




I call this girl "Shay". She has tan on the neck. (FYI - the girl in the background is a BA/SFH mix; the roo was crested. She's a spunky little thing.



This girl (Emma) is 2 yo.

I have put off setting my Emu eggs because of my incubator construction.
Well it's complete but I'm in desperate need of someone providing any feedback or advice!! Please! My goal is to have them set by Friday morning the absolute latest!

Pics provided. I know @birdman55 has built one or several. Not sure who else.

1st and most important at this time is the smell! I have checked over and over that it isn't something melting and it was there the moment I turned the lights and fans on. It surprises me how strong the smell is and makes me concerned that it will cause issues with the development of the embryos.

I know plenty of these coolerbators hatch chick's. Is it the cooler I got or is it truly Normal.

Temps are stable.

In the meantime I candle the shipped eggs. They are day 14 tomorrow and of the 15 NN shipped I have 12 alive and well. I do have 3 of those with funky air cells. They dip pretty far down on one side. I am going to turn the turner off at day 16 and hatch upright which I've never done before. 2 of the 8 set silkie eggs are still alive too which were pullet eggs.

Now one of those girls decided to sit so I stuck about 8 more silkie eggs under her! Lol!

My DH has been given some unpaid time off due to the strike. His company actually tried to act like it was a good thing. But by doing it the way they are, he can't collect unemployment or start another part time job as the time off is not set in stone.

Congrats! You've already figured out the hardest parts: the wiring & keeping stable temp. Great job so far!

Mine did not have a plastic smell but I built it over time as I acquired the pieces. Letting it "air out" usually gets rid of most factory-new odors. Increasing air circulation by opening it up & using a fan may speed it up. (before you start incubation of course.)

Is your fan protected to make sure it doesn't get pecked? Likewise are your light bulbs high & above chick level? Think about & test how you're going to add humidity.

Love the viewing window! (If you feel you're losing heat through it, a towel cover is a quick fix. After my 1st hatch, I added some of that expanding foam because my cooler's lid did not have insulation between the layers. After drying I cut away any excess & added a double pane. Probably overkill, but now my incubator feels cool to the touch outside & exactly 99.5'F inside.)

I also like your simple heat sinks. They should help maintain the temp. If they may leak, just tape the lids in case of tipping. Is the temp uniform throughout? Did you drill air vents?

Any chance you asked where their chicks are from? TS has stopped getting their chicks form Mt. Healthy in OH b/c of the several samonella scares last year. I urge anyone getting hatchery chicks to find out where they are coming from! (the hatchery chicks I may get this year are EEs)

Wanted: Hatching Egg Donors.

It has been proposed that as another way to raise money for Chickenfest 2015, we have some hatching egg auctions.
Do you have birds producing fertile eggs? Then you qualify to be an egg donor. All fertile eggs acceptable - turkeys, quail, emu, pigeons, chickens, ducks, geese, etc ....
These auctions are a great way to increase the fun of getting local hatching eggs as well as provide a method for spreading all of the different breeds we have among our members. Anything from rare breeds and barnyard mixed eggs qualify for donating. All that is needed are the fertile eggs promised in the auction at the time the auction ends. Willing to ship? Great! Not so sure about shipping eggs and prefer pickup only? That is perfectly acceptable too, just let us know either way. And of course an additional benefit will be the funds raised to make Chickenfest a better experience for all involved.

Steps to becoming a hatching egg donor:
1. Consider what you want to donate.
2. Consider when you will have the eggs available. The eggs must be available at the end of the auction.
3. Consider if you are willing and able to ship and the costs involved including the postage as well as packaging materials. In state regional shipping is estimated at $10-15 but regional boxes need ordering from the USPS site meaning while a large flat rate box might cost a tad more, it is better for you the shipper. The bidder will be expected to arrange payment with the donor for shipping costs. You are NOT obligated to ship. You can choose pickup only if that is what you are more comfortable with. We just need to know so we can post your choice during the auction.
4. To sign up, please send a pm to @racinchickins Include:
your BYC username;
your location;
breed of donated eggs;
if you can provide a breed description that would be great;
the date you will have eggs available (a range would be best);
how many eggs you have for donation (the auction will not list more than you are willing to donate);
if you are willing to ship the eggs or if your eggs will be pick up only;
the amount of shipping money you would request, if you ship the eggs;
and the email you would want to have the shipping money sent to, if shipping the eggs.
All shipping requested funds will be paid by the buyer in addition to the winning bid amount. All shipping requested funds will be paid to the egg donor so that they may ship in a timely manner (hopefully the first business day after the auction ends).


The first auction was planned to start today but the weather has delayed it. I won't be collecting eggs for hatching until it is above 20F.

Exciting! I think many of us will be delayed on eggs with the extreme cold.

Its hit here too, DHs work is slowed way down, and my nephew's hours are cut way back. I am so sorry, know how tough it can be.
