INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@racinchickins got strawberry plants from me last year and I still have TONS! Patrick how did they do?? I know my neighbor and mom got some too. Theirs did great. I think I had a couple hundred plants dug up last year and still have that much more and then some. You're welcome to some if you want.

I'll have to come get some this year!!

got a few minutes to ask a question; would a warm bath help 2 Silkies that were attacked by big chicken and almost drown them in a big mud puddle? they are cold and caked with mud cant find any damage, just wet muddy and cold. I'm going to go ahead and bath them just would like to know if it will do any good. thank in advance.

I would. You'll need to thoroughly dry them and keep them somewhere warm til the temp outside is warm. For us tomorrow during the day would be fine but I'm not sure what your temps are.

finally getting to see green again !

sounds good! It's nice to thin them out because there are so many! I started with only 13 plants and by year 3 they were in the hundreds! My neighbors did it right. They planted them in cinder blocks. Seems they would be easier to control that way. I swear I pinched of runners and they grew over winter!! Lol!

I didn't realize they grew like that! Maybe I DON'T want any. LOL. I would love to get a fruit bush garden planted, but I am planting so many trees this year it seems like a lot to do (and water)!

Do chickens eat strawberry plants? Mine were doing great in 2012. In June 2013, something came along & ate about 2/3 of my berry bed. Just as the little nubs started to get leaves, the critter came back & finished them off. I went from 200 plants down to about 70! Last spring I spread out my few remaining plants, but didn't get enough to feed my family. That's why I'm wondering if my hens were up to something. They can have all the mulberries they wish. They leave the blueberries & raspberries alone, but the same type of mini fence is around the strawberries.

I would strongly suspect rabbits before the chickens as mine do not eat the plants but they certainly will eat the fruit but not until they are ripening. The same fencing that was posted a bit ago I use with stakes and zip tie it up to keep them out. It's only about 4ft tall but the don't fly over it. I have to make sure there aren't any openings though or a few of them will find it and in they go!! Lol!
